First edition of this compendium one of two issues the other published by Johann Coster in which nine celebrated early modern Christian hebraists advance their views on the original pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton YHWH. The celebrated hebraist and Old Testament scholar Adriaan Reland 1676-1718 judged by Bayle to be one of the most learned writers of the eighteenth century is best remembered for his works on Jewish antiquities. He edited various other collections of essays and dissertations including Analecta Rabbinica 1702; Dissertationes miscellaneae 1706-1708; Dissertationes de nummis veterum Hebraeorum 1709. His opinion on the proper pronunciation of YHWY agrees with the first five hebraists in the present collection as well as the current scholarly consensus. I.- Johannes Drusius the elder 1550-1615 Tetragrammaton sive de nomine Dei proprio. II. - Sixtinus Amama 1593-1629 De nomine tetragrammato. with a response to Fuller. III. - Louis Cappel 1585-1658 Oratio de SS. Dei nomine tetragammato YHWH ac genuina ejus pronunciatione -- see Burnett Buxtorf 229: "Shortly after his appointment ot Saumur in 1613 he began his studies in biblical philology and textual criticism. His lecture on the Tetragrammaton delivered on June 22 1614 attests to a preoccupation with methodology which would distinguish his later work." This was later printed in the Arcanum punctationis 1624 and here in our volume. IV. - Johann Buxtorf the elder 1565-1629 Dissertatio de nomine YHWH -- see Burnett Buxtorf 124: "For the Tetragrammaton alone Buxtorf devoted ten pages of discussion in his 1615 Lexicon Hebraicum et Chaldaicum." V. - Jacob Alting 1618-1679 Exercitatio grammatica De punctis ac pronunciatione tetragrammati YHWH. VI. - Nicolus Fuller 1557-1626 Dissertatio de nomine YHWH -- see Orme and his note on Drusius' charge of plagiarism against. VII. - Thomas Gataker 1574-1654 De nomine tetragrammato dissertatio. London 1645 - Gataker later defended himself against Cappel in Thomae Gatakeri . Dissertationis de Tetragrammato suæ a D. Ludovici Cappelli in diatribæ de eodem suæ defensione nuperâ adversus eandem objectis Vindicatio London 1652. VIII-X. - Johannes Leusden 1624-1699 Dissertationes tres de vera lectione nominis Jehova. Michigan senator Jacob Merritt Howard 1805-1871 who had worked closely with Lincoln in drafting and passing the Thirteenth Amendment was a strong supporter of his measures including "emergency actions during the secession crisis and advocated 'severe exemplary and speedy punishment of the rebels. He was especially vocal on all matters pertaining to the confiscation of rebel property and the emancipation of slaves. He was also one of the most forceful advocates of the 1863 Conscription Act" ANBO. His ire extended to trying for treason the Confederate leaders. In December he wanted to know why Davis had not been put on trial and now despite it being well-known that Davis did not have complicity in Lincoln's murder he declared in this resolution that Davis be "charged with the crimes of having incited the assassination of Abraham Lincoln President of the United States and with the murder of soldiers of the Unites States held a prisoners of war during the rebellion and other cruel and barbarous practices in violation of the rules and usages of civilized war." Clement C. Clay was also to be tried. It appears that Merritt's resolution never made it to the floor for a second reading as was required by law. Scarce. "Called 'the most noted person of his age' by Anthony Wood Henry Stubbe 1632–76 classicist polemicist physician philosopher and the most important critic of the early Royal Society has never had a biography. This study seeks to fill that gap while standing received opinion about him on its head. The older view has it that at the Restoration Stubbe renounced his radical past and became the enemy of scientific progress and a reactionary defender of church and monarchy. Professor Jacob shows instead that Stubbe continued to espouse radical views after 1660 by devious means. Publicly he resorted to a rhetoric of subterfuge while he let the full extent of his radicalism be known in private conversations at Bath and in an important clandestine manuscript which Jacob proves to be his that circulated among radicals from the early 1670s well into the eighteenth century". – publisher. The 8 "extra" plates have small vignettes of the signboards which the publisher describes as the added 72 figures offered here in this copy. / "In these modern days the signboard is a very unimportant object: it was not always so. At a time when but few persons could read and write house-signs were indispensable in city life. As education spread they were less needed; and when in the last century the system of numbering houses was introduced and every thoroughfare had its name painted at the beginning and end they were no longer a positive necessity—their original value was gone and they lingered on not by reason of their usefulness but as instances of the decorative humour of our ancestors or as advertisements of established reputation and business success. For the names of many of our streets we are indebted to the sign of the old inn or public-house which frequently was the first building in the street – commonly enough suggesting its erection or at least a few houses by way of commencement. The huge "London Directory" contains the names of hundreds of streets in the metropolis which derived their titles from taverns or public-houses in the immediate neighbourhood. As material for the etymology of the names of persons and places the various old signs may be studied with advantage. In many other ways the historic importance of house-signs could be shown." / "Anecdotes and historical facts have been introduced with a double view; first as authentic proofs of the existence and age of the sign; secondly in the hope that they may afford variety and entertainment. They will call up many a picture of the olden time; many a trait of bygone manners and customs—old shops and residents old modes of transacting business in short much that is now extinct and obsolete. There is a peculiar pleasure in pondering over these old houses and picturing them to ourselves as again inhabited by the busy tenants of former years; in meeting the great names of history in the hours of relaxation in calling up the scenes which must have been often witnessed in the haunt of the pleasure-seeker—the tavern with its noisy company the coffee-house with its politicians andvii smart beaux; and on the other hand the quiet unpretending shop of the ancient bookseller filled with the monuments of departed minds. Such scraps of history may help to picture this old London as it appeared during the last three centuries. For the contemplative mind there is some charm even in getting at the names and occupations of the former inmates of the houses now only remembered by their signs; in tracing by means of these house decorations their modes of thought or their ideas of humour and in rescuing from oblivion a few little anecdotes and minor facts of history connected with the house before which those signs swung in the air." – Preface. The occasion was a celebration of German Democrats "whose thrifty and pleasant homes are mostly in the Fifth Ward." In this scarce pamphlet Cox lauds the German opposition to tyranny their love of "Constitutional government and law;" and their distrust of anarchy and disorder particularly those annoying "Woman Rights Free Love and Abolition Conventions." Most recently such destructive "egotistical faith" has shown itself in the John Brown Invasion and in the doctrines of the Republican Party. "When Brown shoots down the citizens at the Armory he appeals to the God of the oppressed as his judge and all the Ismatics of New England and Ohio applaud the murderer as a martyr."
