The implication from the author is that the task of converting a typically winning position into a full point or converting a drawing position into half-a-point is relatively straightforward. However as all of us practical players realize it's not always a simple as this and many hard-earned points are wasted through "a lack of technique". Gloucester Publishers paperback books

Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2000 Hard Cover. xv 5 538 pp. Translated from the Italian by David Selbourne with 'Remarks on The City of Light' by Wang Lianmao. "In 1270 a scholarly Jewish merchant called Jacob d'Ancona set out on a voyage from Italy. A year later he arrived in China at the coastal metropolis of Zaitun the "City of Light" now known as Quanzhou four years before Marco Polo arrived at Xanadu in 1275. Nothing was known of this epochal journey until 1990 when David Selbourne was shown d'Ancona's account of his travels a remarkable manuscript that had been hidden from public view for more than seven centuries. Eventually translated and edited by Selbourne and published in Great Britain in October 1997 as The City of Light the account was praised as providing an unparalleled insight into life in the medieval world. Controversy followed. Selbourne had pledged to the manuscript's owner that he would not reveal its whereabouts and that raised doubts about its authenticity. As a result of U.S. sinologists' criticism of plans for American publication the first edition was canceled. Now a year later Birch Lane Press happily publishes the controversial work. Criticisms of the textual evidence of d'Ancona's account have been answered by Selbourne. Most notably other academics--particularly and significantly in China--have come to the support of d'Ancona's account. The work is to be published in a Chinese translation. Vivid and insightful this account has great historical significance. It not only describes the adventures of a medieval trader but also comments on Chinese society and manners through the eyes of a European man of learning. The City of Light brings spectacularly to life d'Ancona's encounter with one of the world's great civilizations. Citadel Press / Kensington Publishing Corp hardcover books

A fine copy in a fine jacket. 2017 Hard Cover. xii 253 pp. Homesteading the Plains offers a bold new look at the history of homesteading overturning what for decades has been the orthodox scholarly view. The authors begin by noting the striking disparity between the public’s perception of homesteading as a cherished part of our national narrative and most scholars’ harshly negative and dismissive treatment. Homesteading the Plains reexamines old data and draws from newly available digitized records to reassess the current interpretation’s four principal tenets: Homesteading was a minor factor in farm formation with most western farmers purchasing their land; most homesteaders failed to prove their claims; the homesteading process was rife with corruption and fraud; and homesteading caused Indian land dispossession. Using data instead of anecdotes and focusing mainly on the nineteenth century Homesteading the Plains demonstrates that the first three tenets are wrong and the fourth only partially true. In short the public’s perception of homesteading is perhaps more accurate than the one scholars have constructed. Homesteading the Plains provides the basis for an understanding of homesteading that is startlingly different from the current scholarly orthodoxy. University of Nebraska Press hardcover books

Wellington is located thirty-six miles southwest of Cleveland; Oberlin is nine miles north of Wellington. In January 1856 a negro slave called John was missing from a plantation in Mason county Kentucky. In August 1856 a friend of the owner recognized John at Oberlin and with the aid of friends from Kentucky arrested him with the intention of taking him back. They took him to Wellington where he was rescued by a large body of persons from Oberlin and Wellington---hence the title. Thirty-seven of the rescuers were indicted by the State and confined for many months in the Cleveland jail while the trial progressed. They were finally acquitted and great was the rejoicing. The account of the affair is contained in 280 double column solidly printed pages."---THOMSON'S Bibliography of Ohio. John P. Jewett and Company hardcover books

Vellum binding hand lettered spine sprinkled edges. An extensive history of philosophy by the author whose five-volume Historia Critica Philosophiae formed the basis of William Enfield's The History of Philosophy the first English language history of philosophy to treat thinkers beyond ancient history Locke Newton Hobbes Leibniz Descartes etc. Brucker is known primarily for his massive Historia Critica Philosophiae 5 volumes 1742-44 with an Appendix 1767. Passmore calls that work "the standard history of philosophy in the 18th century to which both Kant and the Encyclopaedists for example were very considerably indebted." 'The Idea of a History of Philosophy' in The Historiography of the History of Philosophy 'S-Gravenhage 1965. The present work contains 28 papers divided into three sections: Historico-Philosophica pp. 1-257; Historico-Literaria pp. 258-552; and Philologico-Critica pp. 553-608. The nine "observations" of the first part deal mainly with ancient philosophy with papers on: "number" in Plato and Pythagorian philosophy Brucker's dissertation; Pyrrhonism; Stoicism; the Alexandrian School et al.; as well as "Supplementa ad historiam de ideis exhibens" pp. 110-147 a supplement to Brucker's first book 1723. The second part opens pp. 258-290 with a paper that contains the first printing of six letters from Leibniz to Spizel Ravier 435. This section many of whose subjects appear to have connections with Augsburg also includes observations on Melanchthon's Hypotyposes theologicae 1521 sketches of the lives of Brucker's mentor Philipp Jakob Crophius the humanist Hieronymous Wolf and his student David Hoeschel as well as biographical sketches of several physicians. Osler 6614: "Bought 29.X.18 for the 3 medical lives i.e. J. Martius A.P. Gasser and L. Schroeck." To these three one might add a fourth "De Vita Matthiae Schenckii" pp. 334-351. 1900réf. 21362Boston/New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company. Very Good. 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket an ex-library but nice-looking with only minor handling wear and with some interesting annotations on the rear pastedown see Notes for details. B&W photographic plates INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "Faithfully yours / Jacob A. Riis." An account of the author's anti-slum crusade during the decade following the publication of his most famous work "How the Other Half Lives." By 1900 this Danish-American social reformer photographer and muckraking journalist was nationally famous and in demand as a speaker -- which is amply documented by the various markings in this copy which was inexplicably withdrawn from the collection of the Nebraska State Historical Society and is stamped as such on the title page and the rear pastedown. Also on the rear pastedown the original librarian's I assume annotation provides both authentication of the signature and provenance of the book: "Bot bought of HW Brown: $1.10 Pd 2-24-1903 Sig. of author same date heard author lecture at Oliver Theater on 'Tony's Hardships.'" An additional ownership signature that of a Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Lincoln Nebraska appears on a second front endpaper also dated 2-24-1903. The referenced lecture in all its particulars is confirmed by an account in the Nebraska State Journal of February 25 1903 with the reporter commenting that "the unconscious naturalness of Riis's pose and gestures the sincerity of the man and the fact that his words were the outcome of years of keen personal observation and experience all combined to make the lecture one of exceptional interest with the unusual charm of being seemingly a spontaneous talk with an audience with whom the speaker was in full confidence and sympathy." And incredibly some idiot librarian chose to deaccession this book. Well that's Nebraska for you. And I'm from there so I can say that.
