1865réf. 42696New York. 1865. A Santa Fe Trader in Baja California A scarce work on Baja California. "Jacob Primer Leese was a Santa Fe trader who settled in San Francisco in 1836 and engaged in the hide and tallow trade with Yankee ships. He married a sister of General Vallejo and became very wealthy. In 1863 Leese and other promoters founded the Mexican Mining and Colonization Company and obtained a land grant from the Mexican government of some 46800 square miles between the 24th and 31st parallels of latitude in Baja California. They failed to meet their obligations however and the grant was transferred to another party in 1866. This outline was written 'in the interest of the Mexican Mining and Colonization Company.' In addition to details on the grant it provides material on the discovery early settlements missions minerals and pearl fisheries of Baja California" - Hill. Modern mottled calf gilt. 1609réf. 38891Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas 1609. A Pioneering Dutch Voyage to the Indies Second French edition following the first French edition of 1601 of this important voyages narrative describing the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. Van Neck who represented the Verre Company commanded three ships which were part of the first successful Dutch trading voyage to the region. The other two ships were commanded by Wybrand Van Warwijck and Jacob Van Heemskerk. Van Neck's vessel became separated from the other two after rounding the Cape of Good Hope and the three did not reunite again until his arrival in Java in late December 1598. Unlike his Dutch predecessor Cornelis Houtman who three years earlier had seized the port of Bantam Van Neck dealt diplomatically with the natives. "Rather than rejecting the inflated prices asked by the local ruler he offered to pay over the odds in order to cement a lasting relationship.Van Neck's was the most profitable of the pre-VOC Dutch East India Company voyages. Despite the apparently high price paid for spices he netted a profit of 300 per cent on his overall costs. In 1601 fourteen fleets comprising sixty-five ships sailed for the East Indies but by that time competition between rival Dutch operators as well as with the Portuguese had inflated prices and none were as successful as Van Neck's first enterprise" - Howgego. While focused on activity in the East Indies EUROPEAN AMERICANA notes that the text includes references to Brazil and tobacco from the West Indies. The second part of this 1609 French edition which has its own titlepage is an eight-page appendix of words spoken in Java and Malay including word lists in French printed in roman type Malay in italic type and Javanese in civilité. Two parts. 228 leaves second part with its own titlepage. Folio. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards spine gilt. A few leaves with worm tracks expertly repaired. Very good. 1772réf. 46993Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey 1772. Rare Account of Lower California by a German Jesuit First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for seventeen years 1751-68 and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California including the Pericues Guiacuras and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California its climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: ".it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians the soil was poor the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768 after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The top right corner of the territory present-day Arizona is labeled rather ominously "Los Apaches Barbari." The excellent plates which were apparently not issued with all copies depict male and female California Indians. A prime early account of Baja California with an important map and plates of the region. 163581pp. plus two engraved plates on one sheet and folding map. Small octavo. Modern half vellum and marbled boards spine gilt. A bit of light age toning an occasional light fox mark. Three small purple ink spots in lower portion of map. Near fine. HOWES B29 "b." HILL 46. 1741réf. 37910Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Andrew Bradford 1741. Early Philadelphia Almanac: Poor Richard's Rival An almanac by Jacob Taylor who published his important Pennsylvania almanac for the years 1700 to 1746. It is a distinct possibility that the present copy was owned and signed by Taylor as his inscribed name on the titlepage is accompanied later in the volume by a manuscript correction to a poem "manumated" becomes "manumitted". Taylor took the poetry in his almanacs seriously printing excerpts of Paradise Lost in 1741 and composing well-received verse of his own. In addition to the calendar this 1746 almanac contains a substantial amount of poetry; lists of courts fairs and Quaker meetings; and a discussion of Hannibal's oath before the gods. This he concludes with a quote from the 1739 almanac of "R. Saunders" Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard on the dangers of false wit and pride in the present age commenting favorably on Saunders "By wicked Wit the Truth is often drown'd; Here certain Truth adorn'd with Wit is found" p.23. Taylor's almanac was printed by different Philadelphia printers over time. Some were printed by Franklin but this one was issued by Andrew Bradford one of Franklin's rivals and the son of William Bradford the first printer in Philadelphia. 12mo. Printed self-wrappers stitched. Contemporary ink inscription "Jacob Taylor" in upper margin of titlepage; contemporary ink correction on p.27. Cellophane tape joining signature at spine occasional minor foxing. Else bright clean and very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. DRAKE 9634. EVANS 4818. ESTC W22747. hardcover books

réf. 6108JACQUES LOUIS DUPONT 1755-1823. Dupont was a French cleric and lecturer turned revolutionary politician. He served as a member of Parliament between 1791 and 1794. ALS. 3 pg. 8 x 12. February 1798. Indre et Loire. An autographed letter signed Jacob Dupont To the Administrators of the Department of the Seine written in French: I have the honor of letting you know of a request I made of the Executive Directory in order to have free disposal of the Salle de Manage which is occupied right now by the Council of Five Hundred to give there free public courses in agriculture business the art of logic according to Condillac the elements of morals taken from the philosophical elements of Alembert pure Math physical-mathematical science which I have taught successfully at Bordeaux and in Chaumont in Haute Marne and finally Botany natural history chemistry experimental physics anatomy and the progress of the human mind according to the historical table of Condorcet. The Minister of Finances presented my request to the Directoire-Executif and youll see in his answer which I included here that I cant have disposal of the Salle de Manage. In introduced myself to the ministers of the Catholic worship who practice the faith conforming to the law of the church of Notre-Dame. I asked them if I could give my lectures on agriculture business arts and sciences at free hours. They answered that this permission depended on you citizen administrators. So I present myself to you citizens with the utmost confidence in order to get this permission. The good I intend to give to Paris the Republic Europe and perhaps to both worlds is immeasurable. Youll feel citizens all the importance if youre kind enough to glance ay the brochure which I published for this purposeIt is entitled The Opening of a New Instructive Course about the Role of Revolution by Jacob Dupont. Please citizens-administrators take my request into consideration. I will come myself to get your answer as soon as possible. If only I could be lucky enough to have it favorable. This letter not only reveals the language of the late French Revolution citizen-administrators Council of Five Hundred etc. but also the deluded mental state of Jacob Dupont. Once a prominent lecturer and Red Priest a Catholic clerical supporter of the Revolution Dupont was slowly but surely driven insane by his internal conflict between his support for the Revolution and his faith ultimately renouncing the latter. In 1797 he was imprisoned after an arrest for sexual assault making it difficult to believe that just the next year he would have support for resuming his teaching. The letter is written in French but a typed English-language translation is provided. The original letter is in fine shape with some minor stains and folds. unknown books

Hardcover. nice-looking book minor wear to the extremities one-time owner's name at top of front endpaper. B&W photographs and diagrams From the Foreword by John Osborn Polak: "In the following pages the author illustrates describes and correlates the development structures and functions of the human body in such a readable and accurate manner as to be understandable alike by the high-school student and the professonal aspirant who desires to review the fundamentals of the pre-clinical sciences." Per the title page the book contains "190 original illustrations mostly from dissections and animated drawings by the author." If you think some of the small illustrations in the book somewhat resemble motion picture film frames you will not be surprised to learn that Dr. Sarnoff 1886-1961 was a pioneering maker of medical films who between 1920 and 1924 produced a six-reel set of films with this same title which was bundled with this book and a set of slides. The author's Preface explains how the book coordinates with the films and its text in fact is divided into "reels" rather than chapters: "Reel 1 -- the Digestive System" etc. He later produced an even more elaborate set of films: 200 reels depcting 300 opeations released in 1932 under the title "System of General Surgery in Motion Pictures." . c.1927. réf. 40578FALKE Jacob Von. ART IN THE HOUSE. Boston: L. Prang 1879. 4to. Publisher's full brown morocco elaborately blind and gilt stamped all edges gilt. xxx 356 pages added chromolithographic title page 60 plates. First American edition. Holzenberg # 77. Falke was perhaps the most important German writer on taste in the Aesthetic era. He has written a history of interior decoration--beginning with the Greco-Roman house through the eighteenth century. Critical observations on style and harmony are filtered through aesthetic principles. Successive chapters deal with decorating the house in various stages: the floor wall ornaments ceilings furniture and decorations on the table. His work reflects many of the "artistic" principles in vogue in England and elsewhere: the dependence of Form on function; the importance of good design in everyday living; and the preferred use of historical styles as inspiration rather than strict models for modern decor. This edition was translated by C.C. Perkins from the third German edition. The 60 plates are a combination of five chromolithographs and 55 albertypes and typographic etchings. In addition there are one hundred and sixty-six in-text figures. Front cover with a gilt stamped vignette; interior of front hinge neatly reinforced; some light foxing. Otherwise a very good copy of a heavy book usually found in shaken and worn condition. unknown books
