1824réf. S14963Boston: Cummings Hilliard & Co. 1824. 534222 . . HB. 8vo orig. publisher's cloth-backed boards stained/worn with loss to cloth at head/foot of spine; orig. printed paper title piece; cloth spine split along length but text block firm; front board detached; rear board and blank rear endpaper almost detached. Pages uncut. Occasional spotting/staining. An interesting unsophisticated copy with plant material pressed between the pages and with some brief pencil annotations concerning plant collecting dating from the 1830s-1860s. 2nd enlarged edition. Jacob Bigelow 17871879 was an American physician and botanist. The preface states that Bigelow published the first edition of this work with the aim to contain intelligible descriptions of the more common and interesting plants found within a circuit of about 10 miles around Boston. Its publication was at that time rendered necessary by the great deficiency of books relating to American plants. The second edition contains about twice the number of plants which were included in the first edition.Although the work more immediately applies to Boston and its environs yet I have inserted in this edition all such plants as I have formerly collected and described in any part of the New-England states.. 1819réf. K5JBGDYJHEH7Paris: Méquignon-Marvis 1819. Modern marbled boards with red title-label on spine. 8vo. First edition of the French translation of a classic mineralogical work by the Swedish chemist Jöhns Jacob Berzelius 1779-1848. "The methods of mineral classification existing at the time were based on appearance and physical properties. These seemed highly unsystematic to Berzelius. He concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification could be based only on chemical composition. In his original system first published in 1814 he arranged the minerals in terms of their basic constituents although he later revised this and placed chief emphasis on the acid component" DSB. The book opens with a dedication to the French mineralogist René Just Haüy and a brief preface. In the main text Berzelius sets out his development of a new system for classifying minerals according to their chemical structure. The second half of the book sets out these new classes orders families and genera. All the minerals are mentioned by their French names followed by their chemical structure. Some foxing otherwise in good condition.l DSB II pp. 90-97; Hoover 122; Schuh I 537; Ward 202.
