1863réf. 13393N.p.: Printed Not Published 1863. 48pp. Modern crimson wrappers. Large dampstain throughout first half of text text toned thereafter. Marginal pencil markings throughout including one notice of transposed lines on page 9. Overall good plus condition. A rare collection of letters by an anonymous author mostly sent to President Abraham Lincoln but also to Secretary of State William Seward Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase and other officials between October 25 1860 and February 19 1863. The author is a Unionist and a self-described "citizen" not a soldier though he has plenty to recommend to President Lincoln and others about how to prosecute the present war. He also refers to himself as "a cool observer outside the stifling atmosphere of Washington" though again he wastes no time in recommending actions and strategies for political and military improvements. The author was most certainly a political actor of some kind as he writes intimately and on friendly terms with Lincoln and others "You know my personal regard for you" to John J. Crittenden in early 1861. He writes long letters to his correspondents about a decidedly wide variety of issues including the future of slavery political intrigue the dissatisfaction of the public early in the war and more but mostly about troop levels troop movements officer appointments and other aspects and critiques of war strategy. A notable angle of the work is that the author's side of the correspondence and likely some of the return correspondence he mentions within the letters are possibly lost to history other than their presence here. The imprint reads simply "Printed Not Published" and does not include a place or date of publication. We have assumed the date of 1863 given the introductory note is dated March 8 1863. OCLC reports just six copies at Columbia the Huntington Library Harvard Brown the University of Chicago and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Printed, Not Published unknown

1850réf. 13208Washington DC: Office of Printers to the House of Reps 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Good . Octavo 626pp. illustrated plus six plates. A good or better copy in contemporary 3/4 black leather and marbled boards. Contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper and small private library label to front paste-down else unmarked. Mild foxing to first and last few leaves. Extremities rubbed and scuffed and the joints tender but sound. An important volume in the pantheon of presidential books which chronicles on pp. 57 and 262 the award of a patent to then-Illinois Congressman Abraham Lincoln. Having twice been aboard a riverboat which got stuck on shallow shoals he developed a concept for a bellows fixed under the hull of a riverboat which could be inflated to lift the boat over the obstruction and then retract. Lincoln had been a patent lawyer in the mid-1840s and was closely familiar with the laborious patent application process. To this day Lincoln is the only president to have been awarded a patent a fact which contributes to his enduring legacy as an uncommon genius and polymath. As such this tract while unrelated to politics is an essential volume in any substantial Lincoln collection. Uncommon in the trade. Not listed in Monaghan. 1720réf. 32296Amsterdam: Henri Abraham Chatelain 1720. Other. In two sheets. In excellent condition. Lightstained outside of the image of the map see illustration. 380 by 880mm 15 by 34¾ inches. A beautiful example of Henri Chatelain's important 1720 map of Java. The map was produced for Chatelains 7 volume world atlas out of Amsterdam. Covers the island in full as well as adjacent parts of Sumatra and Bali. The volcanic island of Krakatau here identified as Cracatao which nearly 150 years later would erupt with devastating consequences appears in the Strait of Sunda between Java and Sumatra. In the lower left side is an inset details the city and port of Batavia. Henri Abraham Chatelain 1684 - 1743 was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris St. Martins London c. 1710 The Hague c. 1721 and Amsterdam c. 1728. He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography history ethnology heraldry and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain as is commonly believed but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri his father Zacharie and his brother also Zacharie. The entire piece measures 27.5 inches by 20.5 inches. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. réf. 59238Abraham Heidanus Frankenthal 1597-Leiden 1678 minister and from 1648 professor in Leiden; moderate but convinced Certasian. In this book which would be the reason of his discharge as professor he opposes the '20 posities' imposed by the trustees of the University and the Burgomaster of Leiden on which it was forbidden to lecture. These forbidden positions included the works by Coccejus Wittichius Cartesius Von Wolzogen: the last 'position' reads that philosophy is an explainer of the Word of God. Very rare. Only 6 copies of the first edition held in Dutch libraries.NL De auteur Abraham Heidanus was predikant en tot 1676 professor in Leiden. "Apud Joannem Bapt. Vrintium" Jan Baptist Vrients. 1601. Copper engraved map of Ancient Crete from "The Parergon " of Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" 1601 edition; black & white. Latin text to verso. The map shows ancient Crete in the lower half with 3 smaller maps above of Corsica the Ionian Islands & Sardinia in ancient times. Good dark impression; some soiling and spotting mainly to blank margins; light creasing to centre fold and two horizontal creases to lower blank margin; very short tears to lower edge and corners somewhat ragged. Abraham Ortelius 1527-1598 Flemish Cartographer . produced the first modern Atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570. printed by Aegidus Coppen Diest. There were numerous editions thereafter with texts in various languages; the printing of such was taken over by Chrstoffel Plantijn in 1579 . Ortelius himself drew all the maps in manuscript before passing them to the printers. there is conjecture that he may have engraved some of the plates as well The 1595 Latin text edition is the most complete produced during his lifetime containing all the maps of the 1593 edition plus those of the the"Additamentum" and the"Pareragon" or Ancient geography. The " Additamenta" were supplements to the original Atlas; at the same time Ortelius replaced some maps with new ones showing the same place; some plates were also reworked . Ortelius was Geographer Royal To Phillip II of Spain from 1575. He also worked closely with Braun & Hogenburg on the "Civitas Orbis Terarum". After his death the plates were purchased by Jan Baptiste Vrients in 1601 who published further editions until 1612.
