Very good; some overall browning; tide mark diminishing to the first few leaves of both volumes; bindings scuffed; hinges are strained; a small paper flaw in page 5 of volume one touching two letters. 8vo I - iv 5 - 200 pp.; II - 2 3 - 200 pp. Both volumes collate: A - M8 N4. The copyright notice attributes authorship to Adam Douglass. He had emigrated at a young age from Belfast and settled in the US but went back to Ireland in 1812. He returned a few years later and settled in New Market VA writing two books including this one see Wayland A History of Shenandoah County. The last definite appearance of the book in trade that I could locate was in 1959 in a Midland Notes catalog that copy defective with a page chip affecting three lines of text; the copy of record at the AAS is also defective lacking a leaf of text. Foster was a job printer and newspaper publisher in Winchester see Index of Virginia Printing for a detailed biography who left the trade in 1821. The author states in the preface: "The Emigration from Ireland to the United States has been and still is vast. No human being can love his country better than an Irishman. But oppression forces him from his home. And the sons of Columbia grant him an asylum in a land where virtue reigns triumphant and where he can assert those rights as a man which heaven has implanted in his breast." It purports to be the first Irish-American novel. S&S #41151; Wright I #1367. John T Sharrocks, J Foster Printer unknown books

He studied academic subjects at the University in Vienna and then drawing and engraving at Viennese Academy of Arts Kupferstecherakademie under Jacob Schmuzer 1733-1811. From 1777-1781 he worked in the Imperial Library cataloging books. Between 1783-4 he was sent to Paris with the print collection's registrar Paul Strattmann. Returning to Vienna Bartsch received his first commission for a catalogue raisonné of prints that of the collection of Charles Antoine Joseph Prince de Ligne 1759-1792. In it Bartsch set out the organizing principles of what would be his famous later work Le Peintre graveur. In 1791 he was appointed curator of the imperial print collection by its director Gottfried Baron van Swieten 1734-1803. The Imperial collection expanded nearly 20-fold under his direction. Bartsch was elected to the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts in 1792. In 1794 was named adviser to Albert Duke of Saxe-Teschen on his drawings collection. In 1795 Bartsch embarked upon a series of artist's oeuvre catalogs beginning with the prints of Antoni Waterloo 1610-1690. Fighting against the Fascists he described in painfully vivid and occasionally comic detail life in the trenches - with a "democratic army" composed of men with no ranks no titles and often no weapons - and his near fatal wounding. As the politics became tangled Orwell was pulled into a heartbreaking conflict between his own personal ideals and the complicated realities of political power struggles. Many of these dissenters were thrown in jail for their opposition to the war from a future Nobel Prize winner to an editor behind bars who distributed a clandestine newspaper on toilet paper. These critics were sometimes intimately connected to their enemy hawks: one of Britain's most prominent women pacifist campaigners had a brother who was commander in chief on the Western Front. Two well-known sisters split so bitterly over the war that they ended up publishing newspapers that attacked each other. Mariner Books paperback books

His other works include Crowner's Quest The Island of Death and The Cambridge Murders. From the flap: "Mammy Green whose ostensible trade was that of a dealer in native produce in Edwardsville Old Guinea was in point of fact assumed to be at the bottom of most of the unpunished crimes in the Colony. It was even rumoured that the nefarious activities which had earned her the nickname of 'The Black Mamba' had been so profitable as to enable her to send two sons to Cambridge and a daughter to one of the most fashionable girls' schools in the South of England. In any case Stanley Carruthers on his first appointment to the Coast wasted no time in falling into the trap which she cunningly laid for him for 'The Black Mamba' was something of a specialist in dealing with young men. Spine creased pages toned. 2008 Trade Paperback. xviii 634 pp. In the wake of his disastrous Russian campaign of 1812 Napoleon's imperious grip on Europe began to weaken raising the question of how the Continent was to be reconstructed after his defeat. There were many who dreamed of a peace to end all wars in which the interests of peoples as well as those of rulers would be taken into account. But what followed was an unseemly and at times brutal scramble for territory by the most powerful states in which countries were traded as if they had been private and their inhabitants counted like cattle. The results fixed at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 not only laid the foundations of the European world we know; it put in place a social order and a security system that lie at the root of many of the problems which dog the world today. Although the defining moments took place in Vienna and the principle players included Tsar Alexander I of Russia the Austrian Chancellor Metternich the Duke of Wellington and the French master of diplomacy Talleyrand as well as Napoleon himself the accepted view of the gathering of statesmen reordering the Continent in elegant salons is a false one. Many of the crucial questions were decided on the battlefield or in squalid roadside cottages amid the vagaries of war. And the proceedings in Vienna itself were not as decorous as is usually represented. Drawing on a wide range of first-hand sources in six languages which include not only official documents private letters diaries and first-hand accounts but also the reports of police spies and informers Adam Zamoyski gets below the thin veneer of courtliness and reveals that the new Europe was forged by men in thrall to fear greed and lust in an atmosphere of moral depravity in which sexual favours were traded as readily as provinces and the 'souls' who inhabited them. He has created a chilling account full of menace as well as frivolity. Harper Perennial paperback books
