Hardcover. 8vo. 256 pp. Publisher's original purple cloth with gilt stamping to the spine. A very good copy the binding well preserved with only light wear. There is some minor staining to a few pages as shown in the photographs. In the scarce original dust jacket showing light aging on the front only and some tearing and wear along the spine including at the head and foot. A presentation copy warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To my friend S. Reznick / In friendship / Noah Steinberg / Nov. 24th 1947." Steinberg's uncommon first novel written in English following several volumes published in Yiddish. Set within Chicago's Jewish immigrant community during the Depression the novel explores poverty anti-Semitism social injustice and the struggle to preserve dignity in modern urban life. The dust jacket features contemporary endorsements by Sherwood Anderson and Llewellyn Jones. The volume is illustrated by S. Witkewitz Louis Lodowick Rinaldo Cuneo Hilda Katz George Grosz and others.
