1819réf. 63295New York: Published by Kirk and Mercein London: by John Miller 1819. A Notable Jewish-American Diplomat Noah was U.S. Consul in Tunis during the Barbary Wars and as such was responsible for freeing American seamen. The present account is based on his experiences while in that office in addition to his travels in Europe. Some time after publishing this work he purchased Grand Island in the Niagara River with the intention of establishing a Jewish refuge which he named Ararat. While a number of men and women arrived in Buffalo in September of 1825 for a celebration of the founding of Ararat the proposed settlement did not attract even a single resident and Noah gave up on the venture within days of the ceremony. Noah was notable as one of the first Jewish Americans to hold an important diplomatic post and was ultimately removed from office for anti-Semitic reasons. This volume prints letters of support from Jefferson Madison and John Adams. The Jefferson letter is particularly famous for its support for fairness to Jewish citizens. Contemporary calf spine ruled in gilt gilt leather label. Binding rubbed and scuffed front board nearly detached holding by upper cord. Frontispiece detached but present closed tear repaired on verso with linen tape. Scattered foxing and staining occasional small marginal tears or flaws not touching text a few leaves and one plate apparently supplied from another copy. A fair copy lacking one plate. SMITH N17. 1808réf. List2316Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin 1808. Letterpress broadside measuring 13 x 7 ¾ inches. Some slight toning near fine overall. Fine. A broadside announcing the candidates for the United States House of Representatives a list which includes Noah Webster. Webster received 212 votes in the preliminary election in May enough to get him a spot on the ballot but lost in the general election in a generally difficult time for Federalist politicians. Webster experienced a religious conversion during this period after being a not particularly devout Congregationalist earlier in his life and embraced the church completely perhaps due to the death of his infant son in 1806. Webster would run again for U.S. Representative in 1810 1812 and 1816 losing each time and eventually abandoned politics his last office held being in the Connecticut House of Representatives ending in 1807 shortly before his first campaign for national office. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC or other ephemera relating to Webster's political career in Connecticut in the trade. The collected acts from this session were published in octavo format but we find no other record of this broadside printing. Hudson and Goodwin unknown
