Martin & Walter 15478 (first volume only); Sabin 28152 (first volume only); not in Echeverria & Wilkie; not in JFBL. Original edition, extremely rare with the "Supplement ...." which is almost always lacking. Against the policy of La Luzerne with regards to the colonies. Gouy d'Arcy led the colonial delegates in support of the Tennis Court Oath: the colonies had sent delegates to the upcoming Estates General in France and had even drafted their own cahiers des doléances in which they voiced their demands for more home rule and economic freedom.Gouy d'Arcy acquired a consderable fortune by marrying Anne-Amable Hux de Bayeux, a rich creole from Saint-Domingue and he became an ardent defender of colonial and Saint-Domingue interests, was founder of the colonial committee of Paris and the Club Massiac, and was instrumental in legislation favouring the colonists, and a fierce opponent of Brissot and the Amis des Noirs. Together with Moreau de Saint-Méry, he organized fierce opposition to any colonial reform (see: Albert Soboul, Dictionnaire historique de la Révolution française, pp. 516-7.)The original frontcover of volume one is preserved and gives, both recto and verso, the chronology of the events in Saint-Domingue covering the period December 1st 1789 - 22 October 1790. - Very rare in this complete state.

Second edition of first volume, first edition of second volume. The first volume was originally published in 1791 of which edition several different issues exist. The second volume was published in 1792. The translation was done by Francois Soules. The work is a defense of the French Revolution and a statement of the principles of 1776 and 1789 and, of course, the famous counterblast to Burke's Reflexions on the Revolution in France. It is also an exposition of the principles of government underlying the American and French revolutions. For an elaborate analysis of the work see: John Keane, Tom Paine, a Political Life.'The Rights of Man, published in 1791 and 1792, was written after his return to England in 1787 in response to Edmund Burke's attack on the French revolution. This pamphlet stimulated the radical reform movement in England and the Jeffersonian Republican party in the United States and led to the prosecution of Paine in England for sedition and to his election to the French National Assembly. In England, the Rights of Man became a foundation text of the English working class movement until about 1880' (IESS, xi, pp. 364-5).Thomas Paine "symbolisé, de 1776 à 1793, l'élan révolutionnaire, tant en Amérique qu'en France" (Dictionnaire historique de révolution française, p. 808)The second volume includes propositions for schemes of taxation, including one for the abolition of the poor-rate. Since 1792 the work was adopted as the manifesto of the party which sympathised with the French Revolution. The title-page of the second volume reads: Droits de l'Homme, Seconde Partie, réunissant les principes et la pratique; ........ Traduit de l'Anglois sur la troisième édition.

Sabin 32638; Echeverria & Wilkie 789/116; not in Leclerc; not in Fay; not in Howes; cf.: Kress B.1719; cf.: Goldsmiths 13832; not in Einaudi; no French edition in JFBL. Only edition in Quarto, very rare, probably the first French edition. Both Sabin and Echeverria & Wilkie give a 4to edition printed in Rouen. A detailed exposition and statistical comparison of the imports and exports of Great Britain and the United States, from 1700 to 1783. With each edition, Sheffield substantially revised and enlarged the text. Written in opposition to the bill introduced by Pitt in 1783, proposing to relax the navigation laws in favour of the States, the work was influential in determining the abandonment of the motion. Sheffield points up the weak position of America and continually stresses the growing commercial importance and potential of the West Indies and Canada (especially Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, particularly with regard to fisheries, lumber, and ship-building). Howes writes that the work was very influential in shaping England's trade policy from 1783 to 1789, so detrimental to American commerce and shipping interests as to contribute greatly to the formation of a Federal union, better able, than were the separate federated states, to retaliate against British maritime might. The tables provide extensive statistical information, giving a comparative export and import survey of the trade between the United States and other countries. This translation from the English original was due to De Rumare, magistrate at Rouen. The later Mirabeau translation did not include the statistical tables. - Titlepage browned, some scattered spotting, but a good large paper copy.

1842réf. 39134Montreal: Printed by John C. Becket 1842. Canadian Land for Sale A Canadian broadside advertising lands available in the Eastern Townships printed at the beginning of the region's transformation into a French-speaking area. In the early 1800s the Eastern Townships were an almost exclusively Anglophone region of Quebec. The American Revolution precipitated the flight of over 40000 Loyalists to Canada in the 1780s including a small handful to the largely unsettled region of Quebec between the St. Lawrence River and the U.S. border known as the Eastern Townships. The Loyalists cleared much of the rich land for farming which attracted a large number of immigrants from New England in the first decades of the 19th century. In the 1840s a rapid shift occurred in the region as French-speaking Quebecois from poorer areas began pouring in and the English speakers began emigrating to the U.S. and other parts of Canada. Francophones became a majority in the 1870s and today constitute over 85% of the population. The present broadside printed in English lists hundreds of lots for sale by the British American Land Company and includes over a column's worth of detailed descriptions of lands open for purchase. The following towns and areas are represented: Ascot Auckland Brompton Compton Clifton Clinton Ditton Dudswell Eaton Hereford Melbourne Newport Orford Shipton Stoke Weedon Westbury and Windsor in the County of Sherbrooke; Barford Barnston Bolton Hatley Potton and Stanstead in the County of Stanstead; Brome Ely Farnham Granby Milton Roxton Shefford and Stukeley in the County of Shefford; Acton Aston Chester Durhan Grantham Ham Kingsley Simpson Tingwock Warwick Wendover and Wickham in the County of Drummond; Sutton in the County of Missisquoi; Hemmingford in the County of Beauharnois; and improved farms in the district of St. Francis Territory Port St. Francis and the town of Sherbrooke. 1927réf. 5282Various locations in Minnesota and Canada 1927. Good. 1721pp. of mimeographed text illustrated with thirty-six original silver gelatin photographs mounted within the text. Original dark green cloth binder text bound with two brass brads. Abrasions and heavy rubbing to covers cloth fraying along spine. Minor toning and occasional thumb-soiling to text. Numerous ink corrections to text. A wonderful handmade detailed travel narrative documenting a two-week canoe excursion into the wilds of northern Minnesota and Canada in 1927. The author Harold R. Greenlee headed out from Winton Minnesota with his friend Donald MacNaught on June 5 and returned to the same location on June 23. In the meantime Greenlee and MacNaught traveled via canoe through "practically virgin wilderness without roads railroads or communication of any kind." Specifically they began their canoe trip up Fall Lake Basswood Lake and Prairie Portage then into Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario Canada. They then journeyed through Birch Lake Carp Lake Knife Lake and other locations along the U.S.-Canada border eventually reaching Saganaga Lake before they turned for home again. They were back in Minnesota by June 16 and spent the remainder of their trip at Red Rock Lake Ogishkemuncie Lake and various parts of the state on the way home. Greenlee's narrative records details on their fishing adventures catching mostly Great Northern Pike but also pickerel and trout locals and others encountered along the way the natural landscape and various natural features especially with regard to their rowing efforts the details in making camp and so forth. Greenlee's narrative is unusually detailed compared to similar fishing excursion memoirs of this type often comprised of a few or more pages per day. The photographs picture both Harold and Donald in their boat posed with fish carrying their canoe across the portages resting in camp cooking lunch on the river bank and more as well as scenes of the rapids at Prairie Portage an expanse of Knife Lake three different views of Silver Falls at Saganaga Lake a Native American grave on an island in Cache Bay on Lake Saganaga Jasper Falls a scene in Eddy Lake and "A full blooded Indian and canoe he built Saganaga Lake" among others. Harold and Donald spent part of their journey traveling with a party of engineers and a Native American canoeman and some of the photographs capture the other travelers. A representative entry reads as follows: "Just above the rapids and in Cypress Lake there is a sort of bowl shaped pool in which we saw Bass Wall-eyed pike Pickerel and Great Northern Pike. We decided to cast there a awhile and caught several Great Northern Pike and Pickerel. I hooked one Bass but he succeeded in throwing the hook out of his mouth. I was not sorry of this for the Bass season is not open. After fishing for a while we started up the Lake. We had to go through some narrows which looked more like a river than a lake and this lasted for some few hundred yards. We then had to make an abrupt right hand turn and headed northeast to Cypress Lake." We were unable to locate any other copies of this likely unique personal canoe trip narrative in OCLC or elsewhere. unknown
