1927réf. 5282Various locations in Minnesota and Canada 1927. Good. 1721pp. of mimeographed text illustrated with thirty-six original silver gelatin photographs mounted within the text. Original dark green cloth binder text bound with two brass brads. Abrasions and heavy rubbing to covers cloth fraying along spine. Minor toning and occasional thumb-soiling to text. Numerous ink corrections to text. A wonderful handmade detailed travel narrative documenting a two-week canoe excursion into the wilds of northern Minnesota and Canada in 1927. The author Harold R. Greenlee headed out from Winton Minnesota with his friend Donald MacNaught on June 5 and returned to the same location on June 23. In the meantime Greenlee and MacNaught traveled via canoe through "practically virgin wilderness without roads railroads or communication of any kind." Specifically they began their canoe trip up Fall Lake Basswood Lake and Prairie Portage then into Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario Canada. They then journeyed through Birch Lake Carp Lake Knife Lake and other locations along the U.S.-Canada border eventually reaching Saganaga Lake before they turned for home again. They were back in Minnesota by June 16 and spent the remainder of their trip at Red Rock Lake Ogishkemuncie Lake and various parts of the state on the way home. Greenlee's narrative records details on their fishing adventures catching mostly Great Northern Pike but also pickerel and trout locals and others encountered along the way the natural landscape and various natural features especially with regard to their rowing efforts the details in making camp and so forth. Greenlee's narrative is unusually detailed compared to similar fishing excursion memoirs of this type often comprised of a few or more pages per day. The photographs picture both Harold and Donald in their boat posed with fish carrying their canoe across the portages resting in camp cooking lunch on the river bank and more as well as scenes of the rapids at Prairie Portage an expanse of Knife Lake three different views of Silver Falls at Saganaga Lake a Native American grave on an island in Cache Bay on Lake Saganaga Jasper Falls a scene in Eddy Lake and "A full blooded Indian and canoe he built Saganaga Lake" among others. Harold and Donald spent part of their journey traveling with a party of engineers and a Native American canoeman and some of the photographs capture the other travelers. A representative entry reads as follows: "Just above the rapids and in Cypress Lake there is a sort of bowl shaped pool in which we saw Bass Wall-eyed pike Pickerel and Great Northern Pike. We decided to cast there a awhile and caught several Great Northern Pike and Pickerel. I hooked one Bass but he succeeded in throwing the hook out of his mouth. I was not sorry of this for the Bass season is not open. After fishing for a while we started up the Lake. We had to go through some narrows which looked more like a river than a lake and this lasted for some few hundred yards. We then had to make an abrupt right hand turn and headed northeast to Cypress Lake." We were unable to locate any other copies of this likely unique personal canoe trip narrative in OCLC or elsewhere. unknown books

Wagner-Camp 169: "John McLean entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company during the winter of 1820-21 and worked in the Ontario area for the next decade. He was then sent to New Caledonia by way of the Saskatchewan River and to Fort St. James on Stuart's Lake in British Columbia. Streeter finds McLean's style entertaining but the Company's methods of suppressing competition prosecutable under present United States law." Field 996: "the largest portion of these volumes is devoted to the narration of incidents of travel among the Indians of the territory; descriptions of the life habits and character of the different tribes inhabiting it and the relations of the Hudson's Bay Company to them. 1947réf. List3322Trail British Columbia: Hall Printing Co 1947. Broadside measuring approximately 19 x 19 inches. Folded with some wrinkling and very small tears at margins; excellent. The Doukhobors are a Spiritual Christian group that originated in the Russian Empire around the late eighteenth century. Persecuted for their pacifism and rejection of the Orthodox Church the Doukhobors were first removed to present-day Ukraine then the Transcaucasus with some of their leadership exiled to Siberia. In the late nineteenth century they were allowed to emigrate and with the help of both Quakers and the Christian anarchist Tolstoyans—whose beliefs largely accorded with the Doukhobors’—many ended up in western and central Canada. In Canada the dissident group Sons of Freedom or Freedomites Svobodniki formed out of the Doukhobors; their opposition to assimilation and government interference was more extreme than their parent group and they were known for eschewing cooked food the use of animal labor and clothing.1 The Freedomites became increasingly violent in their protests of the modern world particularly making use of arson and bombings leading the vehemently pacifist Doukhobors—who were often their victims—to disavow the group. Offered here is a broadside produced by the Doukhobors in British Columbia appealing to the Canadian government for help in apprehending and controlling the radicals ending the Doukhobor’s “dreadful existence under constant fear.” The broadside reproduces the correspondence between the Union of Doukhobors of Canada and various provincial and federal officials and especially emphasizes that contrary to popular belief the Doukhobors had been open and cooperative with law enforcement. Despite the “suspicion on the part of our people as to whether necessary measures were ever taken by the proper authorities” the group tried “to cooperate to the best of our ability.” They ask: “We regarded Canada as foremost in racial and religious tolerance. Why is ‘a civil war between Doukhobors’ allowed to go on and people forced to engage in violence in contradiction to the principle of faith they endeavor to uphold” We find one copy of this broadside in OCLC. 1 Maurice Gerschon Hindus “Doukhobors and Dissenters” in A Traveler in Two Worlds Doubleday 1971 290–303. The text block is cracked at the rear but is still very sturdy. From the Introduction- "When speaking at St. George Utah to gather people to build the irrigation system in Canada Apostle John Taylor said that he could not see why anyone would stay in St. George country with such a country as Canada available to live in. He got called on that. One settler told him flatly that they had been called to settle that country and they would stay there and build it up as they were told to do. And so they did unless specifically called to go elsewhere. They loved the beauty of those bare mountains more than any place on earth. But the same fierce loyalty brought people from all the Mormon settlements on special call to settle Canada and build an irrigation system. Southern Printing Company Limited hardcover books

1776réf. 23234London 1776. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio. Second edition of this important report first issued in 1749 and bound here as issued with 12 other committee reports first published between 1737 and 1765. According to ESTC N69513 four volumes of these committee reports were officially ordered to be printed on 28 June 1773 and were published in 1774-1776. They were reprinted along with 11 additional volumes and an index between 1803 and 1820. The 1803 reprint of this report is commonly found but this 1776 edition is scarce. See Peel 26 TPL 213. In 1749 the House of Commons appointed a committee of enquiry into the lands and trade of the Hudson's Bay Company HBC. It was undertaken as a result of a petition made by a group led by Irishman Arthur Dobbs who hoped to have the HBC''s trade monopoly revoked on the grounds that their policies had led to a loss of British control of the fur trade and that showed little interest in promoting expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage. The Report offers a history of the Company from its formation and includes the journal of Joseph La France a pioneer trader with the Indians inhabiting the region of the Great Lake who describes visits into French Canada the state of the fortresses there and French trade with the Indians. It also includes testimony given before the Committee by many witnesses including serveral people employed by the HBC as well as merchants engaged in trade in HBC territory. The Appendix includes the text of the HBC's charter a list of vessels sent by the HBC in search of a Northwest Passage tables of the HBC's annual sales and exports "A Journal of a Voyage and Journey undertaken by Henry Kelsey to discover and endeavour to bring to a Commerce the Naywatamee Poets an unidentified people who may have been the Hidatsa or Gros Ventre 1691" and much other interesting material. hardcover books
