1880réf. 145431Alaska: Unknown ca. 1880. Original albumen photographic print mounted on the original photographer's mount. 20.5 X 14 cm Image and mount are slightly soiled but the image is clear and crisp for the most part. An excellent image. We have not been able to find another example and cannot determine the photographer. The Muir Glacier was first observed by George Vancouver in 1794 who found that most of Glacier Bay was covered by an enormous ice sheet up to 3500 feet thick. Since then the retreat has been nothing less than catastrophic. From 1892 to approximately 1980 it had retreated nearly 32 kilometers. Between 1941 and 2004 the glacier retreated more than 12 kilometers and thinned by over 800 meters. This late 19th century image clearly shows the ice tongue before the vast melting. The native encampment on the shoreline shows several tent frames and boats of the days. A great image very useful to show current climate change. 1880 Unknown unknown
