First published in 1676 Degge's Counsellor remained the preeminent practical manual for the English clergy and their legal advisors for nearly 150 years. Written by a prominent barrister and Royalist judge rather than a theologian the work is celebrated for its pragmatic secular approach to church law. It was instrumental in redefining tithes-originally a religious offering-as a strictly enforceable legal property right under common and statute law. This 1681 edition was published during a period of intense legal refinement following the Restoration. It includes substantial additions over the first edition reflecting the evolving court precedents that sought to stabilize the Church of England's financial footing. A critical feature of this edition is the "Catalogue of Dissolved Monasteries" which identified lands exempt from tithe payments-a vital reference tool for 17th and 18th-century land disputes. This copy features a notable generational provenance within a documented London legal family. The rear endleaf contains the inscription of Thomas Adlington fl. 1765 an attorney active in the mid-18th century. The front free endpaper and leaf Ee2v bear the signatures of his successor Thomas Adlington fl. 1795 a partner in the prom. unknown books

The Builder was founded in 1842 or 1843 sources differ by Joseph Aloysius Hansom 1803 -1882 a British architect and inventor of the Hansom cab. Architect George Godwin 1813-1888 took over as editor in 1844 and developed the magazine into "the most important and successful professional paper of its kind with a readership well beyond the architectural and building world. Each weekly issue carried detailed reports of new building works and architectural debates plus articles on history archaeology and the arts. Above all The Builder was known for its campaigns for health and housing reform. Godwin wrote first-hand reports on slum overcrowding and its results. He supported architectural remedies such as improved housing by charitable trusts public baths and wash-houses and pavilion-plan hospitals but equally he believed in improvement through individual perseverance and effort. As editor Godwin is reputed to have written much of each issue himself assisted by a staff of no more than five. He took a particular interest in the quality of the illustrations used relying mainly on wood-engravings but later introducing photo-lithography and other photo-mechanical processes. Among the illustrators he relied on were H. W. Brewer John Brown Worthington G. Smith and Benjamin Sly" ODNB entry on Godwin. By the end of the 16th century their lighter weapon.and simple nimble and controlled fencing style emphasizing skill and speed rather than force spread throughout Europe. Most of the wrestling tricks used in earlier disciplines were abandoned the lunge was discovered and fencing became established as an art" Encyclopaedia Britannica. The present image marks the zenith of the use of the epee in Europe. "In the latter half of the 17th century the sword and swordsmanship changed dramatically with a change in gentleman's dress. In France the court of Louis XIV set the fashion of silk stockings breeches and brocaded coats. As the long trailing rapier was unsuited to this form of dress fashion decreed the wearing of a light short court sword. Van Leeuwen was a Dutch attorney active in the Hague and Leiden who became the assistant registrar of the Supreme Court at the Hague in 1681. His reputation derives from his studies Paratitula Iuris Novissimi 1652 Het Rooms-Hollands-Regt 1664 and the present work. First published in 1662 it is an important study of Roman law and old Dutch law with an emphasis on practical use. It was published soon after Holland achieved its independence from Spain. During this period Dutch law was a complicated mixture of local and Spanish sources which often conflicted. In this work van Leeuwen restated Dutch law by removing Spanish elements and grounding it on principles derived from Roman law. It also has interesting comparisons between Dutch law Roman law and the laws of other nations. Though never highly regarded in Holland this work was translated into the principal European languages and issued in numerous editions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was especially influential in South Africa where it was cited extensively and given a statutory place as a subsidiary authority in the South African Republic. unknown books
