A popular 18th-century utopia described in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction on-line as "one of the first Lost World novels in the literature" and "probably the first to suggest that the lost race in question may be Ancient Egyptians." Often attributed to Bishop Berkeley but in fact the work of another Catholic divine Simon Berington; in any case not a translation of any Italian work and "Gaudentio di Lucca" a synonym. Gaudentio which describes an imaginary African kingdom of Mezzorania where "Nature is the source of all that is good for mankind" originally appeared in London in 1737 and proved immediately popular going through a succession of French and German translations prior to the death of the author in 1755. The first American edition appeared in Norwich Connecticut in 1796; ours is the second American edition printed in Philadelphia three years later. Both editions are institutionally plentiful but rather uncommon in commerce. SARGENT p.11 the 1st ed. LEWIS p.18. NEGLEY 93. LCP AFRO-AMERICANA 1125 citing only this edition. EVANS 35183. 1682ref. 51316London: G. Wells 1682. First edition. Hardcover. Very good-. Two parts small octavo. Collation: A2 star8 B-O8 P2; second series K-2H8 2I4 = 296 leaves. 20 211 1 blank 129-487 1 blankpp. Index of letters bound between the reader's preface and the Life of Morin. Texts in Latin with occasional passages in Hebrew Arabic Syriac and Greek. Contemporary vellum lightly stained with old manuscript label faded and blurred at spine. Occasional light toning and a few oxidation spots else a very good copy with crisp text. First edition of this important collection of letters chiefly between the orientalist and member of the Oratorian order Jean Morin 1591-1659 and Cardinal Francesco Barberini 1597-1679. Occasioned by the attempt of Pope Urban VIII to unite the eastern churches with the Roman Catholic Church they document an important early attempt to address the relations between Rome and the Christian communities of the Levant and Near East. The first two letters from the Samaritan community in Egypt are addressed to Joseph Scaliger and discuss the differences between their luni-solar calendar and that employed by the mainstream Jewish community; originally written in Hebrew the present Latin versions were prepared by Morin. Fourteen letters contain the correspondence between Morin and Pietro Della Valle 1586-1652 on Samaritan matters and Islamic chronology. Purchased from the heirs of the French scholar Amelot de la Houssaye the 94 letters were edited by the pioneering biblical critic Richard Simon 1638-1712 who may be credited with the "first attempt to write a history of the Bible as a piece of literature" Schaff-Herzog. Focusing his analyses on the text versions and commentaries Simon critically discussed the Septuagint and the Vulgate and defended the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He affirmed the critical value of the Masoretic text while acknowledging the late origin of the Hebrew vocalization system. In his Histoire Critique du Vieux Testament Paris 1678 he also dared to suggest "that Moses cannot be the author of all the books attributed to him." Too radical for its time the work was suppressed and nearly all copies of the first print run were destroyed. A transcription of one of the surviving copies served as the basis of the 1680 Rotterdam edition and an English version published at London in 1682. Simon was expelled from the Oratorians. It thus comes as no surprise to observe that his substantial biography of Morin which precedes the letters "amounts to a diatribe against not only Morin but the entire Oratorian Congregation" Wetzer & Welte. Provenance: Stamp of Collegii Albertini Bonnae at recto and verso of the title; from the library of Old Catholic theologian J. H. Reinkens 1821-96 with his manuscript entry at the front endleaf. 1899ref. 862921899. Boston: Little Brown & Co. 1899. Boston: Little Brown & Co. 1899. Final Edition Revised Enlarged and Annotated Greenleaf Simon 1783-1853. Wigmore John Henry. Edward Avery Harriman Editors. A Treatise on the Law of Evidence Sixteenth edition. Boston: Little Brown and Company 1899. 3 volumes. Octavo 6" x 9". Volumes one and two contemporary law sheep with gilt red and black lettering pieces to spine. Worn and scuffed. Later previous owner's address inscriptions to front pastedowns. Some penciling in volume two otherwise internally clean. Volume three publisher's tan buckram with gilt red and black lettering pieces to spine. Worn soiled and rubbed. Card pocket to front pastedown. Bookplate of United States Court of Military Appeals to front free endpaper. Property stamps to rear pastedown and front endleaves otherwise internally clean. A good set. $600. Sixteenth and final edition revised enlarged and annotated and historically significant because it represents the transition from Greenleaf's seminal work which was the standard for American evidence law for half a century to the new era of evidence scholarship dominated by its editor John Henry Wigmore. Wigmore who would become one of the most influential legal scholars in American history edited the first volume of this edition just before publishing his own monumental work A Treatise on the Anglo-American System of Evidence in Trials at Common Law which began publication in 1904. Edward Avery Harriman edited volumes 2 and 3 of the edition further contributing to its status as a thoroughly revised and updated version of Greenleaf's work at the turn of the century. The 1899 edition marks a pivotal moment in the history of American legal literature on evidence where the established authority passed the torch to the scholar who would define the field for the next generation. unknown books

Blue cloth gilt. pp. 43 four interspersed plates containing a map a chart and three original photographs. Very good: light wear that is stronger at spine tips and corners a few minor stains. This is a finely produced travelogue documenting the sites and peoples of several different Latin American countries. According to the book's forward the author created it because "The Panama Canal . . . should be the means of drawing this entire Western Hemisphere into closer bonds of commercial and social intercourse. Our neighbors . . . regret that their brothers of the United States do not understand them as they deserve to be understood . . . Let us not forget that they number nearly one hundred million strong and they and their respective countries are rapidly forging to the front ranks of modern nations. The opening of the Panama should be a day of rejoicing for the peoples of the Three Americas." Per the title over three months Long traveled to the listed countries and recorded detailed descriptions of each town or city he visited; he also provided brief histories of each country. In Cuba he spent time in Matanzas and Santiago as well as providing this description of Havana "visitors seem transported as they note the carefree throngs that eat drink and make merry in the brilliant cafes and places of amusement along the broad and handsome Prado . . . streets in the old section are exceedingly narrow . . . The metropolis contains several modern office buildings which appear like skyscrapers from the alleyways below and the mansions of the wealthy especially along the Malecon are homes of splendor. On the other hand the one-story dwellings of the working classes are devoid of ornamentation the iron barred windows giving them the appearance of penal institutions." From Cuba Long went to Jamaica where in Montego Bay "women display far more animation than men driving carts wheeling barrows hawking long ropes of tobacco and smoking big black cigars with the sang froid of a veteran." Next was Columbia with a first stop in Barranquilla with this lyrical description of the end of siesta "at the stroke of six the sunset gun sends forth its booming notes and with an hour the Zocala fills with people . . . Along the plaza they stroll and chat the señors emitting great clouds of the noxious weed the demoiselles flashing glances of Andalusian hue. They are of every rank and every class . . ." He also spent several pages describing Bogota. In Costa Rica he was impressed by San Jose "it is not hyperbole to say that there are but few cities of the same size that display more animation or progressiveness we find in San Jose." He briefly discussed Punta Arenas before heading to Mexico where he spent a couple of pages on Mexico City and Cuernavaca respectively while also providing much detail on rail travel in the country. There are short passages on Jalapa Orizaba and the last several pages are devoted to descriptions of Mayan ruins in the Yucatan peninsula. Also of note are the plates which include three original black and white photographs as well as a map of the Isthmus of Panama with the completed canal. The photos include a Cuban tobacco field and a view of the canal from the Gatun Dam. OCLC locates four copies over two entries; one has 17 plates the other has 15. With ours a third variant we imagine Long issued these books based on the number of photos or maps he had on hand. A rare travelogue documenting the sights and peoples of several Latin American countries and embellished with original photographs. The Long Photographic Art Studios unknown books
