The front cover title: Bifur - Adolphe Mouron Cassandre digitized by Richard Kegler; the front cover author: Arsenal - Andrij Shevchenko Berdyansk; poem and colophon: Genau - Aleksey Popovtsev Kyiv; and production Note: Bandera text - Andrij Shevchenko Berdyansk. From the artist: Writing shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 2022 Britain's poet laureate Simon Armitage responded to 'what is coming at us in obscene images through the news' with a poem titled Resistance published in The Guardian Newspaper. On reading the poem I felt an immediate empathy and in particular with Armitage's repetition of the words "it's war again". This illustrated edition was created to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine and to highlight the recurrent ubiquitous nature and folly of war. The illustrations are montages of manipulated contemporary and archival photographs combinded with my own drawings and images. The calligraphic words sometimes cross-written are drawn from not only the poem but also other sources - e.g. transcripts of a British Pathé newsreel a list of wars spanning two thousand years Putin's declaration of his mission the Ukrainian national anthem news headlines and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's speech to the British parliament. The setting of the verse lines echoes closed captions of news reports and follows Simon Armitage's layout of the poem: three-line verses with the second line indented once and the third line indented twice. 1871ref. 57533New Orleans. 1871. Attacking New York Life for Revoking Life Insurance for Confederate Soldiers An unrecorded broadside printing a lengthy diatribe by former Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner against the New York Life Insurance Company. While the company had initially promised to honor the policies of Confederate soldiers by 1870 they had begun using methods both open and discreet to avoid payments to policy holders "who had taken up arms against the Government." Buckner himself was not a customer but many of his friends had fallen prey to the company's new policy on policies. He wrote public letters in support of his friend one General R.M. Gaines in the New Orleans Times in which he denounced the company's duplicitous tactics and offered to review their documents himself in an attempt to expose their shady practices. The company ignored his letters instead responding indirectly by paying their local agent Dr. Joseph S. Copes to run an article attacking Buckner personally. This broadside is primarily a response to that attack although it also outlines the case in general. Buckner is incensed by the company's actions and more particularly by their attempts to justify them in the name of "equity": "I stated in my letter to Gen. Gaines that your conduct in withholding his money and at the same time rejecting his claims was a violation of equity. You could not controvert my position. But you flew into a passion; got Dr. Copes to call me names in your joint anonymous advertisement and said that my notions were not actuarial. I said that your action was not equitable.strangely confounding the 'letter of the law' with 'equity'.You seem to think it your highest duty to sit in your marble palace watch when the hands of your confiscation dial point to the moment when you can sweep the hard-earnings of some poor man's life into your swollen coffers and then insult the God of the orphan by boasting such conduct to be 'equitable.' Shame on such cold and calculating hypocrisy. Your theories would place the great business of life insurance in dignity and pretension to respectability even beneath that of a common gambler or thimblerigger." Buckner continues to list other examples of misconduct and enumerates the company's lies before reiterating his request that they submit to an examination of their records. He concludes by ever so courteously asserting that even though "I find you so 'wedded to a circuitous way of doing things' and it would probably be cruel in me to ask you to do such violence to your nature as to answer even so simple a question in a direct and straightforward way.I have the right to ask that your response shall not be like your last one - anonymous and printed at the expensive of your policy holders; but as nearly straightforward as your character and habits will admit." Simon Bolivar Buckner was the son of a Kentucky iron smelter distinguished himself in service in the Mexican-American War where he befriended Ulysses S. Grant and became a General in the Confederate army after Kentucky's neutrality fell apart. He is primarily remembered as the first Confederate general to surrender an army in the war giving in to Grant's demands for unconditional surrender at Fort Donelson although despite the harsh terms imposed by Grant their reunion at the surrender was apparently a warm one. Buckner would go on to become a pall bearer at Grant's funeral in 1885 as well as the thirtieth Governor of Kentucky in 1887. Not in OCLC. A rare interesting and colorfully-worded broadside written by a significant Confederate general in defense of his former comrades exposing yet another facet of the hopelessly tangled situation in Reconstruction-era America. 1912ref. 7627Camden New Jersey: The Long Photographic Art Studios 1912. Very good. Inscribed by the author on the ffep. 12¼" x 9½". Blue cloth gilt. pp. 43 eight interspersed plates containing a map a chart and six original photographs. Very good: light wear that is stronger at spine tips and corners a few minor stains. This is a finely produced travelogue documenting the sites and peoples of several different Latin American countries. According to the book's forward the author created it because "The Panama Canal . . . should be the means of drawing this entire Western Hemisphere into closer bonds of commercial and social intercourse. Our neighbors . . . regret that their brothers of the United States do not understand them as they deserve to be understood . . . Let us not forget that they number nearly one hundred million strong and they and their respective countries are rapidly forging to the front ranks of modern nations. The opening of the Panama should be a day of rejoicing for the peoples of the Three Americas." Per the title over three months Long traveled to the listed countries and recorded detailed descriptions of each town or city he visited; he also provided brief histories of each country. In Cuba he spent time in Matanzas and Santiago as well as providing this description of Havana "visitors seem transported as they note the carefree throngs that eat drink and make merry in the brilliant cafes and places of amusement along the broad and handsome Prado . . . streets in the old section are exceedingly narrow . . . The metropolis contains several modern office buildings which appear like skyscrapers from the alleyways below and the mansions of the wealthy especially along the Malecon are homes of splendor. On the other hand the one-story dwellings of the working classes are devoid of ornamentation the iron barred windows giving them the appearance of penal institutions." From Cuba Long went to Jamaica where in Montego Bay "women display far more animation than men driving carts wheeling barrows hawking long ropes of tobacco and smoking big black cigars with the sang froid of a veteran." Next was Columbia with a first stop in Barranquilla with this lyrical description of the end of siesta "at the stroke of six the sunset gun sends forth its booming notes and with an hour the Zocala fills with people . . . Along the plaza they stroll and chat the señors emitting great clouds of the noxious weed the demoiselles flashing glances of Andalusian hue. They are of every rank and every class . . ." He also spent several pages describing Bogota. In Costa Rica he was impressed by San Jose "it is not hyperbole to say that there are but few cities of the same size that display more animation or progressiveness we find in San Jose." He briefly discussed Punta Arenas before heading to Mexico where he spent a couple of pages on Mexico City and Cuernavaca respectively while also providing much detail on rail travel in the country. There are short passages on Jalapa Orizaba and the last several pages are devoted to descriptions of Mayan ruins in the Yucatan peninsula. Also of note are the eight plates which include six original black and white photographs as well as a map of the Isthmus of Panama with the completed canal. The photos include a Cuban tobacco field a view of the canal from the Gatun Dam a giant Aztec calendar and ruins at Uxmal in the Yucatan. OCLC locates four copies over two entries; one has 17 plates the other has 15. With ours a third variant we imagine Long issued these books based on the number of photos or maps he had on hand. Title translation: "Ceremonies and customs which are observed today among the Jews and translated from the Italian of Leon de Modena; with a supplement concerning the sects of the Karaites and the Samaritans of our time. Third edition revised corrected & augmented by a second part entitled 'Comparison of the ceremonies of the Jews and of the discipline of the Church: with a discourse concerning the various masses or liturgies which are in use in all the world' by the Sieur de Simonville." Early publication of the scholar Richard Simon containing his French translation of "Historia degli riti hebraici" by Rabbi Leon of Modena 1574 - 1654 Yehudah Aryeh Mi-Modena. An important source for the history of European Judaism. Modena's work was originally published in Italian first in Paris in 1637 and then in Venice in 1638. Both of these editions included Modena's supplement on the heretical Jewish sects the Karaites and the Samaritans as well as several other chapters on divinations and spells. The book was significant in that was the first work of the modern era aimed at non-Jewish readers to educate them on Jewish religious practice and customs. It was quite popular in the period went through numerous internationally translated editions. Simon's French edition of the work was first issued in 1674 including the supplement by Modena. In 1681 he issued both the second edition of his translation to which was added his work on comparative religion "Comparaison des Ceremonies des Juifs" and that work published separately. It suffices to recall that the work allowed among other things the rediscovery of the East and of non-Christian religions through an almost ethnographic vision which objectively described Judaism independently of the religious prejudices of the 17th century thus inaugurating what will make all the vocation of the great Oratorian. Table of contents a the rear. The final page contains an advertisement for the publisher at the bottom. Overall an excellent copy from the library of Dr. Sydney Ross with his small book label on the paste-down. First edition in English the first effort at an English translation which presumably got no further. The complete English translation was done by the Nathaniel Bowditch and published Boston 1829-1839. In Laplace’s monumental Mecanique celeste first published between 1799 and 1827 all the laws of planetary motion are deduced from the concept of universal gravity. He argued that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and that the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a great step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this area. He also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. Specifically the first book treats the general laws of balance and motion and the universal law of gravity as well as the movement of the centers of gravity of celestial bodies. Laplace 1749-1827 considered the Isaac Newton of France was one of the most influential scientists in the fields of mathematics celestial mechanics and physics. Not much is known about the translator John Toplis. He lived in Nottingham and was likely acquainted with his neighbor the mathematician George Green. H. Barnett unknown books

THE DOCUMENTS ARE NOW DESTROYED AND EVERY SUBSEQUENT REPRODUCTION DEPENDS ON THE PRESENT WORK. OUR COPY CONTAINS TWO EXTRA PLATES NOT FOUND IN ORDINARY COPIES. According to Pierce Butler Laborde's work is "of permanent historical scholarly value." This sentiment is shared by Frederick Goff who described Laborde's work as "valuable for us since it contains lithographic facsimiles of several of the important passages in the testimonies of the lawsuit then extant which is the nearest thing we have to the original documents." The text of the Gutenberg lawsuit is reprinted "verbatini et literatim" along with a French translation. Also included are reproductions of the WATERMARKS of said documents. All of these precious documents were incinerated during the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870. The additional full-page plates in the present copy are stylized reproductions of the woodcuts utilized as models for the steel engravings on pp. 16 and 17. "Whereas Laborde's conclusions have in great part been superseded these excellent and faithful reproductions will always possess a high historical interest. . The work opens with a bibliographical essay on the hypotheses of previous writers and concludes with the results arrived at by the author himself. These are: That 1410 is the probable date of the discovery of printing in the Low Countries; that 1423 is that of the invention of movable types by "Lorenz Coster" at Haarlem; that 1436 is the authentic date of the first experiments of Gutenberg at Strasbourg ; and that 1452 is the certain date of the invention by Gutenberg of cast types at Mayence sic. The rest of the book is occupied by an attempt to establish these theses and there are many facsimiles of type and woodcuts." Bigmore & Wyman I 410. Laborde transcribed not without errors the texts of the lawsuit of Strassburg resident Jerge Dritzehen against Gutenberg; these were derived from six entries in different parts of three several manuscript registers in the city of Strassburg. According to Laborde the first of these were written in a volume described by later scholars as "Vol. A" which consisted of two quires each of 42 sheets or 84 leaves in total; they were covered by a sheet of parchment which had become yellow and soiled; on the recto was written "Dicta. Testium magni consilij Anno Domini M.CCC. Tricesimo noni." The paper which had turned yellow and brown on the edge measured 10 x 9 inches. The second volume "Vol. B" was bound in parchment and consisted of 24 sheets or 48 leaves of paper sewn together 43 of the leaves being written upon. According to Laborde everything connected with the 1439 Lawsuit was written by the same scribe. Laborde's three illustrations of the watermarks two different bull's head and one balance were printed in sepia; the excellent facsimiles of eleven different passages from the Lawsuit were made from lithographic tracings. All were published here for the first time. THE AUTHOR: Marquis de Laborde 1807-1869 studied at Gottingen and afterwards travelled extensively in the East. He subsequently held several diplomatic positions and was curator of the antiquities in the Louvre from 1848 to 1854 and director of the Archives of the Empire from 1856 until his death. He wrote extensively on archeology art printing and engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling minor foxing and a tiny nick at the edge of the right margin. A beautiful plate with stunning early colour from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle" an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration. A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville Comte de Lacépède 1756-1825 was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology physics and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc comte de Buffon whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière. In 1800-1 he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C. Baron Cuvier 1769-1832 as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period Nicolas Maréchal 1753-1803 Nicolas Huet 1770-1830 and Léon de Wailly 1801-1824. Referring to the allemande "When the dance was introduced in Paris where it became popular in the 1760s and 1770s it was done quite differently from the German way at least according to the French dancing master Simon Guillaume. The main interest of the French version lay in a series of joined hand positions through which the partners moved by passing under each other's arms turning each other around and passing behind each other's back. The steps to the dance were of secondary importance judging from the perfunctory manner in which they are treated in French books describing the allemande and seem to have been subject to some variation. In his Almanach Dansant 1770 Guillaume described two allemande steps out of the several he said existed the main one in 2/4 time and another in 3/8." First published in Latin in 1654 as De Iure Sistendi it went through several Latin editions into the seventeenth century and was one of the titles included in the Tractatus Universi Juris 1584-1586 the multi-volume anthology of key contemporary legal works edited by Francesco Ziletti under the patronage of Pope Gregory XIII. The translation edited by Van Leeuwen possibly the most widely read Dutch jurist of the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries expanded its audience. First published in 1653 it went through seven subsequent editions the last one in 1784. The striking title page in the 1659 edition features images of officials executing a seizure warrant flanked by Prudence and Lady Justice and a trial scene. The Van Leeuwen editions are scarce.
