Doubling the North American Isle by William Simon Long is a travel narrative that explores diverse regions of North America through a lens of cultural observation historical reflection and geographic curiosity. Published in the early 20th century the book reflects Long’s continued interest in promoting continental unity and appreciation for the varied landscapes and peoples of North America. He combines first-hand impressions of places such as Nova Scotia British Columbia and the American Southwest with speculative commentary on ancient civilizations like Quibera blending romanticized history with contemporary travel writing. Particularly notable is his descriptive account of the Grand Canyon which exemplifies the book’s focus on natural grandeur and national identity. The Long Art Studios hardcover

He was born into a very rich family and for a number of years was in charge of the residence of the future Louis XIII. After retiring from his public duties in 1782 he concentrated on his growing collection of books and commissioned editions printed in severely limited numbers. Guigard wrote Vol. II p. 351: “San l’amour des livres Mérard de Saint-Just serait complètement oublié.” In 1783 he issued a famous catalogue limited to 25 copies. The catalogue is an odd combination of books which were present in his library books no longer in his library and books which he desired for his library including some completely imaginary books. His collection was not large but fine. Mérard did not have the taste for editio princeps except for Aldines but preferred the best editions with careful editing. He bought books from many of the great collections of the 18th century — Pompadour de Boze Gaignat Randon de Boisset Mac-Carthy Reagh Gouttard etc. — and selected choicely bound volumes including examples by Padeloup Derôme Roger Payne and Baumgarten. 1079 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. 1774ref. 189500London: 1774. Exposing the bread conspiracy First edition of this incisive attack on physiocracy by the habitual contrarian and one-time physiocrat published as the first two parts of this six-part collected edition of his works. This set also includes the first edition of Linguet's Du Pain et du Bled and a revised edition of the Théorie des loix civiles first published in 1767 his critique of Enlightenment liberalism. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was among the most renowned lawyers in France during the 1760s and 1770s until his attacks on colleagues led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. Voltaire observed of his streak of nonconformity that "Paris too has its Jean-Jacques Rousseau" quoted in Vyverberg p. 476. The works published here inveigh against multiple aspects of the pre-revolutionary status quo including physiocratic notions of liberty and the dependence of the French upon bread. The Théorie des loix civiles opened Linguet's campaign again the physiocrats but did not target them by name: the Plus Heureux Gouvernement by contrast directly charged that physiocratic concepts of liberty were opportunistic shams designed to enrich the elite. Linguet's Du Pain et du Bled On Wheat and Bread tackles the systemic dependence of the French peasantry on bread contending - perhaps hyperbolically - that it was a fundamentally harmful food responsible in large part for the grim health of the poor. A response by Tissot 1728-1797 published at Neufchatel in 1779 is bound in this volume. 2 works in 5 vols octavo 163 x 91 mm. With 2 folding letterpress tables. Contemporary tree sheep spines decorated in gilt and with twin red and black morocco labels edges sprinkled grey. Light rubbing and stripping a couple of spots of wear to rear board of vol. 1 and slight loss to head of spine minor browning and foxing to contents: a very good copy ESTC T149730. Set in roman types with incidental italic. The Castrametation lacks 2 preliminary leaves with the portrait and coat-of-arms of Maurits of Nassau Prince of Orange. First French editions of two complementary works in matching format and layout by Simon Stevin on the layout of army camps and on hydraulic engineering for fortifications in particular the use of pivoted sluices for deepening waterways draining land and operating locks. The Castrametation provides a window into daily life in the Dutch army during the Eighty Years' War of independence from Spain shedding light on both the physical arrangement of troops supplies armaments etc. and the rules that soldiers were expected to follow. The Fortification par escluses both reflects and helped to establish the Dutch mastery of the seas and waterways which was unique among nations at this date. While the numerous fortification plans are presented as general types to illustrate principles many are based on actual Dutch cities. The book therefore provides Stevin's analysis of the strtegic situation of many Dutch cities and the ways their security could be improved by hydraulic engineering. Both works were published during the Twelve Years' Truce 1609-1621 partly in anticipation of the renewal of hostilities in 1621 and therefore the need to improve the Dutch defences. With ink owner's additions to the fortification plan on F3 of the second work. Four of the fortification plans also have some additions drawn over them perhaps somewhat later in pencil. With bookplate. The Castrametation lacks 2 preliminary leaves with the portrait and coat-of-arms of Maurits of Nassau Prince of Orange. With a water stain at the head of the leaves in the first half and slightly browned throughout. The binding shows a few stains and scuffmarks with one tape broken at one joint and the paper label tattered but is otherwise good. In this volume Fournier sets out to prove that Gutenberg was not the inventor of the printing press by examining the history of printing. He believes that the technology Gutenberg made popular existed long before the German printer's work. "Peter Simon Fournier a French engraver and letter-founder was born at Paris 1712 and died 1768. He studied under Colson painter of the Academy of Saint Luc and devoted himself first to the art of wood-engraving; he afterwards as an engraver on steel rendered himself famous in all countries. This report was written by two Dutch marine engineers after their inspection tour of cruisers at the Marine Department of the International Inventions Exhibitions in London and various British shipyards including the well-known Newcastle-based firm Armstrong Mitchell & Co. The report starts with a brief introduction to the purposes and itinerary of the trip followed by background information on cruisers in general detailed descriptions of various types and specific examples such as the Japanese vessels Naniwa-Kan and Takachiho-Kan and the torpedo-cruisers Scout and Fearless. Cop was appointed professor of naval architecture at the Polytechnic School in Delft in 1887 while Van Veen 1859-1935 published several technical works and wrote journal articles on naval policy.
