Women's Royal Naval Service photograph album documenting life at HMS Royal Arthur the Royal Navy's training camp establishment at Skegness where a prewar holiday camp was transformed into a military training and accommodation center during the Second World War. Named individuals throughout with handwritten identifications the album follows Dorothy Gardner and other Wrens serving in the expanding wartime navy while also capturing the theatrical entertainment routines featuring cross dressed men and ceremonial duties that shaped daily life away from the front lines. Beyond its images of uniformed women the album records a military community of offices dining halls stages chalets and training facilities that supported Britain's wartime naval operations at a camp which was bombed by German aircraft on February 21st 1942. Photo album of approximately 73 silver gelatin photographs various sizes ranging from 1.5" x 1.5" to 8.5" x 6.5" chiefly HMS Royal Arthur Camp Skegness Lincoln and other British locations c. 1944. Large group portraits are captioned "H.M.S. Royal Arthur July 1944" showing rows of Wrens in naval caps and dark uniforms. Several photos show soldiers by artillery navy men on small military boats and canons. Multiple group photos show men and women in Navy uniform. The photographs place women within the essential but often overlooked machinery of wartime naval administration including supply clerical work communications camp management transport and food service. Additional off camp photographs show bicycle outings skating scenes shipboard snapshots barracks and chalet interiors social gatherings and a guard of honour at Lincoln near the cathedral. Particularly notable is the album's extensive documentation of entertainment and morale-building activities. Several photographs are captioned "Up Spirits" and "concerts at H.M.S. Royal Arthur" revealing an active performance culture within the camp. Sailors appear in theatrical productions alongside women in costume while musicians perform with accordions and pianos before assembled audiences. One series features actor Charles Redgrave "with the girls" and another photograph captures the wartime tradition of gender-crossing stage entertainment in which male servicemen performed in women's clothing for camp audiences. These scenes provide an unusually vivid record of military leisure performance and social life within a wartime naval community. HMS Royal Arthur was bombed by German aircraft on 21 February 1942 The album therefore records daily life at a site that was both a military workplace and a target of wartime attack. By 1944 the Women's Royal Naval Service had expanded dramatically from its earlier First World War role with women serving in hundreds of naval occupations while remaining largely excluded from combat at sea. The photographs capture that transformation through named individuals workplace groups ceremonial events friendships and recreational activities illustrating how women became integral to the operation of Britain's wartime navy. The album documents the social world created when thousands of servicewomen and servicemen lived and worked together inside one of Britain's largest naval shore establishments. Sailors Wrens airmen Canadians civilians performers and local acquaintances appear throughout its pages creating a rich portrait of wartime relationships and community formation. 1826rif. 179101826. Cruikshank George; Barker Matthew Henry. Greenwich Hospital A Series of Naval Sketches. Descriptive of A Man-of-War's Man 1826 combines illustrated naval satire with firsthand narrative material that includes direct testimony of British participation in the Atlantic slave trade. Issued during the period between the 1807 Slave Trade Act and the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act the work provides evidence of how naval literature circulated both popular entertainment and moral critique within British society. Barker writing under the name "An Old Sailor" drew on his experience as a seaman who entered maritime service as a teenager and his accounts move between humor and confrontation with the realities of imperial maritime labor warfare and slavery. One narrative titled "The Slave Ship" describes captives "brought aboard in droves" and "stowed away below. many of them in irons" documenting the violence of the trade while also framing an explicit moral appeal: "Aren't they all flesh and blood sir" The presence of such passages situates the volume within the broader cultural production that contributed to public awareness and critique of slavery in the decades preceding full abolition across the British Empire. Cruikshank George; Barker Matthew Henry. Greenwich Hospital A Series of Naval Sketches. Descriptive of A Man-of-War's Man. London: James Robins and Co.; Dublin: Joseph Robins 1826. First edition. Quarto. Illustrated with 12 hand-colored plates by George Cruikshank with additional wood-engraved tailpieces. Text authored by Matthew Henry Barker who published under the pseudonym "An Old Sailor" and contributed to periodicals including Bentley's Miscellany under the editorial direction of Charles Dickens. Volume presents a sequence of narrative sketches depicting life aboard naval vessels and on shore combining comic treatment of sailors' conduct with episodic accounts grounded in lived maritime experience. The work emerges from a period of expanding British naval power and intensified public debate over slavery empire and moral responsibility within maritime systems. Cruikshank's illustrations noted for their animated treatment of sailors both ashore and at sea operate alongside Barker's narratives to produce a layered depiction of naval culture that includes discipline labor leisure and violence. The inclusion of a detailed slave ship account within an otherwise humorous collection underscores the permeability between entertainment literature and political discourse in early nineteenth century Britain where printed narratives helped shape public understanding of imperial practices. Three volumes. Approximately 200 pages total. Illustrated with 12 hand-colored plates and wood-engraved tailpieces. Bound in marbled boards with gilt compartments to spine. Some soiling to pages with occasional offsetting from plates; textblock remains tight. Corners bumped hinges cracked but holding boards scuffed with later brown endpapers. 1931rif. 159541931. J.J. Martin photograph album 1931-1930s documents United States Marine Corps service during interwar naval deployments and records the geographic reach social structure and daily experience of enlisted personnel attached to the USS Arkansas BB-33. The album establishes direct evidence of Marine Corps participation in peacetime naval operations that linked domestic training hemispheric presence in Central and South America and European port visits during a period when the United States maintained strategic visibility without active wartime mobilization. The inclusion of a certificate marking Martin's crossing of the equator en route to Chile on October 22 1931 places the album within formal naval ritual practice while the extensive listing of fellow servicemen with names home locations and personal remarks provides unusually detailed documentation of interpersonal networks identity and camaraderie within Marine detachments aboard capital ships. Photo album 1931-1930s likely compiled aboard U.S.S. Arkansas during voyages throughout the United States Central and South America Panama Canal Zone and Europe. Oblong format album measuring approximately 8 x 11 inches containing 49 pages including approximately 120 original photographs ranging in size from approximately 2 x 3 inches to 5 x 6.5 inches. The first nine pages consist of handwritten entries identifying fellow Marines and acquaintances with names residences and descriptive commentary. The remaining pages contain photographs depicting uniformed Marines aboard ship shipboard life port visits civilian encounters including women and children at various locations and views associated with transoceanic travel routes including the Panama Canal and European destinations. Several photographs bear captions and a printed equatorial crossing certificate is laid in. Service aboard U.S.S. Arkansas during the interwar years situates this album within a broader framework of American naval diplomacy and military readiness between the First and Second World Wars when battleships functioned as instruments of both training and international presence. Marine detachments assigned to such vessels fulfilled roles in ship security ceremonial duties and expeditionary readiness and their photographic records provide granular insight into how service members experienced global mobility during a period often defined in historiography by relative peace but sustained military infrastructure. The combination of named social registers visual documentation of multinational encounters and evidence of naval ritual contributes to research in military social history interwar geopolitics and the cultural life of enlisted Marines operating within the expanding reach of U.S. naval power. Light soiling to leather boards with two of three ties detached; some page tears and instances of loose or missing photographs; images generally remain clear with subjects unaffected. A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and its continued involvement in US Navy pensions. After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836 a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders except the US government voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly state-chartered bank. This letter from Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part: "I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States." Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837 Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844. Born in Hanover Township New Jersey Mahlon Dickerson 1770-1853 was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey serve as US Senator receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey. unknown books
