réf. 90916London Harrison and Sons 1857. . First edition; 4to 32 x 20 cm; original printed blue wrappers rebacked with a few small tears to spine light stains to covers corner wear internally a very good copy; viii 228 pp. Scarce parliamentary paper detailing the diplomatic incidents between 1842 and 1856 that precipitated the Second Opium War. After the first 'unequal treaty' was signed between China and Britain following the First Opium War the British continued to exploit the still illicit opium trade and were often targets of hostility from local Chinese inhabitants. The Qing government already highly insulted by the Treaty of Nanking were repeatedly affronted by British officers who would overstep their authority and diplomatic parameters when seeking justice. A large section of the paper is concerned with the attack on the missionaries of the London Missionary Society Press Walter Medhurst William Muirhead and William Lockhart in 1848. Rutherford Alcock 1809-1897 then consul at Shanghai used the diplomatic incident to push for greater protection of missionaries as well as securing trade access to Nanking and diplomatic access to the Viceroy of the region. Some of the other incidents described are: disturbances at Canton and the burning of factories; persecution of Chinese in British employ at Amoy; attacks on British at Foo-chow; and an affray between Americans and Chinese at Whampoa. London, Harrison and Sons, 1857. unknown
1930réf. 189255China: late 1930s. Cruising competition and conflict on the China station A well-preserved collection divided into sections concerning naval life in Weihaiwei and other ports and the Sino-Japanese hostilities. The lead in its class HMS Dorsetshire was launched in 1929 and following refitting served on the China station with the 5th Cruiser Squadron from 1936 until the general outbreak of war in 1939. The album is a combination of personal snapshots and occasional professional compositions. It opens with photographs of Weihaiwei including of the naval canteen the China fleet moored in the bay and the Ah Fong photography studio on main street. Others show the port in winter 1938 several snowmen in evidence fleet and gunnery exercises and the crew's victories in the Weihaiwei football competition and the China station's pulling regattas. One studio image shows their bevy of trophies foremost among them the coveted Yokohama Bowl. In Shanghai Jordan snapped many of the famous vistas and sights. The second half is focused on the Sino-Japanese War which had been raging since 1937. Photographs of ruined Japanese cotton mills in Qingdao are followed by shots of Japanese troops entering the city to consolidate their control and others some perhaps from studios document the 1937 hostilities in Shanghai including the burning city skyline. Material on the final four leaves date from after the ship's departure from China. Landscape post-binder album 280 x 360 mm. 1891réf. 184661London: British and Foreign Bible Society 1891. Used on missionary service in Penang A scarce missionary imprint: an early edition of the first New Testament in the Hokkien dialect of Xiamen and southern Fujian province. This was the copy of Daniel Davies Moore among the first Methodist missionaries in Penang which had an established community of Hokkien speakers. The translation was the work of four members of the English Presbyterian Mission: William Macgregor William S. Swanson Hugh Cowie and James L. Maxwell. The first edition was printed in Scotland for private circulation in 1873 and the same plates were used to produce editions in 1880s and 1890s. Moore 1856-1946 "left Canada for Singapore in April 1891 as a foreign missionary. There he was commissioned by the newly established Methodist Church in Singapore to start work in Penang for the English-speaking community. In July 1891 he started the first English service at the Penang Town Hall. The following month the first sacramental service for eight people was conducted at the rented residence of the missionaries at Carnavon Street" Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. His ownership inscription "Davies Moore Penang Dec. 7th 1892" is on the first blank verso. Octavo. 1937réf. 176095China: Hai Ho Conservancy Commission 1937. An imposing cartographic document A rare plan untraced institutionally produced on the cusp of the Japanese invasion of Tianjin showing the fruits of a multi-decade effort to turn the city into a major international port. "Connected with the sea by an artificial river Tianjin's status as a seaport was heavily dependent on the continuous conservancy efforts of the Haihe and its tributaries" "River Conservancy". Formed in 1897 the Hai Ho Conservancy Commission focused on opening the channel to shipping for example by straightening the channel and thereby cutting the route to the sea by 17 miles. This plan shows the river's winding course marked with hundreds of survey stones and the build-up of warehouses and wharves by the foreign concessions Tanggu and Xidagu. Also shown are the results of the most recent survey of the seabed at the river's mouth. Although Japan declared war on China in July 1937 it respected the integrity of Tianjin's foreign concessions and river management remained in the hands of the British French and American authorities until Pearl Harbor. At the same time Japan started development of Tanggu Xingang - the foundations of which blossomed into the present-day megaport at Tianjin. Diazoprint plan 67 x 274 cm printed in reddish brown text primarily in Chinese. Contemporary black ink and red crayon marking and annotations in Chinese and Japanese on both sides. Toned old folds a few small splits and losses neatly conserved with tissue: a very good example of a fragile document. "River conservancy and the undetermined future of the port of Tianjin" Open Rivers available online. unknown

Unpublished typescript for an illustrated address given to the Royal South Australian Yacht Club in September 1929 by Robert Lockhart Jack 1878-1964 with annotations in his hand. Chengtu Chengdu the capital served as a starting point for research trips to record the deposits of mineral resources on the Chinese-Tibetan border on behalf of English companies. Jack's lively and detailed description of the methods and incidents of the 1400 mile 2250 km journey on the Yangtze offer fascinating insights into life and customs along the great river at that time as well as mindful of his audience very detailed descriptions of sailing vessels. With the start of the Boxer Rebellion the expedition was cancelled immediately and as a precaution their return journey was along the shortest route: still some 700 kms 450 miles of mountainous and uncharted terrain; south along the Chinese-Tibetan border where they reached British territory again on October 20th and the town of Bhamo in Upper Burma a day later. Robert Lockhart Jack began his career working in Europe South Africa and China becoming assistant government geologist of South Australia from 1912. First edition of an antiquarian classic by John Selden 1584-1654 eminent jurist polymath prolific scholar and in recent times celebrated for his ownership of the earliest surviving Chinese merchant map of East Asia re-discovered with justifiable fanfare as a treasure of the Bodleian Library by Robert Batchelor in 2008. At the time of its release Selden's "The History of Tithes": "gave great offense to the clergy and was vigorously refuted in a number of volumes to which Selden was forbidden the right to print replies" Pforzheimer. It has been noted that the absence of the printer's name and the place of publication showed that Selden anticipated an unfavourable reaction to his denial of divine right of tithes. He was not disappointed. The work was suppressed and Selden was forced to apologize for having given offense-- and the book was withdrawn from circulation. His work was much studied: this copy with early marginalia: "by this Historie the Right of tithing belong not to ye profession of ye Canonist Civilian or Divine but with Lawyers." the last three words hastily crossed out. Early owners include London Antiquary Thomas Bryan Richards whose extensive Library was sold by King & Lochée in 1812. . [No pubisher, hardcover

Hao-ch'iu chuan "The pleasing history" or "The fortunate union" is a Chinese "caizi jiaren" talent and beauty novel published in the 17th Century. The author is known only under the name "Man of the Teaching of Names" The identity of the author and exact date of publishing are not known. According to Philippe Postel author of "Les Traductions Françaises du Haoqiu Zhuan" the most commonly stated date of authorship is 1683 at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The translator John Francis Davis was Governor of Hong Kong in the period 1844 - 48. At the beginning of his career he served on Lord Amherst's Mission to China and after spending the best part of his career in the service of the East India Company he succeeded Lord Pottinger as Governor of Hong Kong. A scholarly man he did not fit into this role his knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and life being very unpopular with the European community. The frostiness was such that when he finally departed Hong Kong the European community showed their displeasure by not acknowledging his departure in any way. . Oriental Translation Fund. hardcover
