ref. 022857New York: George E. Leefe Lithographer. Unbound. Good. no date perhaps circa 1850s/60s; Single sheet roughly 42 by 6 ¾ inches. Printed on a single side only. Presumably disbound from a book or pamphlet of some sort. A map depicting the straight line of the proposed Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad running from Terre Haute Indiana to Illinoistown Illinois now East St. Louis. Chartered in 1850 the Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad generated contentious debate among the people of Illinois with those in Southern Illinois and those in the Central and North opposed. The opposition hired Abraham Lincoln and other lawyers in a suit to stop the railroad that ultimately failed. Even though the Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad Corporation succeeded in court the railroad never came to fruition. This map depicts various towns along with rivers such as the Wabash and the Mississippi and the intersection of other railroads like the Illinois Central and the Ohio and Mississippi Railroads. GOOD condition. Slightly ex-library with a historical society blindstamp at the right edge of the map. Many vertical fold creases presumably as issued. Minor toning and wrinkling to the map. Several of the gutters of the folds with two small holes offset from the center. George E. Leefe, Lithographer unknown

1914ref. 022505No Place: No publisher 1914. Wraps. Poor. Disbound leaves roughly 8 by 7 inches with a cardstock front cover bearing a label with the student's name and year Marion Conaway 1914. 14 leaves with 12 of the 14 containing a piece of fabric that displays an example of various stitches mostly along hems or seams. The fabric is mounted by metal fasteners. Laid in is a certificate issued in 1918 from the Victory Girls and the United War Work Campaign certifying that Ms. Conaway paid a dollar toward the United War Work Campaign and was deemed an official Victory Girl. This campaign was created as a way for people in the US to support troops during World War I. Presumably the booklet was done for school demonstrating the variety of sewing and stitching techniques that was being taught. POOR condition. Booklet falling apart with all leaves detached and cover detached. Lacking a rear cover. The paper mountings are toned and brittle with some chipping and loss along the edges. The fabrics are clean although some are folded due to mishandling. No publisher unknown
1956ref. 021414No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. No publisher or place. All 1956. Approximately 30-40 pieces. Most are duplicate typed sheets as well as some blank fundraising forms and envelopes and a lengthy guest list including number of tickets needed. These papers relate to a campaign fundraising dinner Adlai Stevenson and his campaign held on April 25th 1956 at the Waldorf. This includes duplicates of letters of invitations addressed to a variety of people; confidential campaign memos; blank fundraising forms; and a lengthy guest list that includes Eleanor Roosevelt among others. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD condition. All housed in a manila folder. Some are stapled many bear creases and are toned with some pencil or pen notes scattered throughout. No publisher unknown
1956ref. 021525No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25 1956 to June 27 1956. 14 leaves printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive from whose estate these came. Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives pondering options and feasibility with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer on "The Foreign Service of the United States of America" letterhead and apparently written from Honduras where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably Willauer along with Claire Chennault established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946 selling it to the CIA in 1950 although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation. Willauer's letter does bear a signature but we have not authenticated it in any way. ref. 021224No Place: No publisher. Unbound. Very Good. 8 by 10 inch glossy photos. No publisher place or date. The photographs are loosely contained in a manila folder with the name of Colonel L.B. de Long typed on it. Affixed to the interior is a copy of a letter addressed to someone working for an insurance company dated September 9 1952. This letter suggests meeting a John Mead and Colonel L.B. deLong who apparently handled "lots of interesting towage and construction projects in Alaska Greenland etc." The photographs are primarily shots of the pier that would make the Port of Thule being constructed depicting metal pipes platforms etc. with some icebergs visible as well as Dundas Mountain in the background. One shot depicts two former Navy vessels which may have been used as temporary housing for workers. They are the USNS General Stuart Heintzelman and the USNS General A W Greely. One photo depicts a ship moored and another depicts a ship just offshore. Pituffik Space Base Thule Air Base was originally built in 1951 and is the northernmost US military installation. It has gained more interest recently due to a US president's inane obsession with Greenland. The website icyseas . org indicates that the Port of Thule is the northernmost deep water port in the world and was constructed in three weeks. It was meant to be a temporary port but is still in use today. It also appears from that website that the pier depicted in these photos is sometimes referred to as the deLong Pier. 1767ref. 020556Portsmouth: No Publisher 1767. Unbound. Good. Single sheet printed on a single side only. 12 ¼ by 7 ½ inches. Armorial ornament of King George III at the top of the sheet followed by printed text asserting that in pursuance of the Acts passed in the General Assembly of the Province of New Hampshire the town named Dover New Hampshire was required to pay the stated sum of taxes as well as naming the constables or collectors who collected the sums. Signed by George Jaffrey at the bottom with the remains of a wax seal present. George Jaffrey Esquire was part of a prominent New Hampshire family who essentially held an oligarchy in the province. They and a few others sought to separate New Hampshire from the province of Massachusetts and through various machinations and political maneuverings did so. George Jaffrey eventually became treasurer of New Hampshire. In the run up to and during the American Revolutionary War Jaffrey was a staunch Loyalist asserting that it was just a few people causing the turmoil and that eventually the colonies would remain with England. Despite his beliefs and the danger it caused him he held his post and remained in Portsmouth New Hampshire during the war. GOOD condition. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present with a few small tears along the folds. A 1 inch triangular area torn off from the upper edge. Uneven toning. Handwriting on the reverse clerical in nature. Many small old paper repairs present along the center fold. No Publisher unknown
1971ref. 016065Washington: Government printing Office 1971. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. 145 7 pp. A few black and white illustrations throughout reprints of illustrations from issues of The Black Panther Party. A supposedly "analytical" report on the Black Panther Party discussing its origins ideology and methodology in achieving its aims. The work cites the words of Black Panther Party leaders and ex-members and subtly seeks to tie the party to foreign groups communists seeking to overthrow the US government while ignoring the facts in some cases such as the murder of Fred Hampton that would portray the US government in a poor light. The report was issued by the Committee on Internal Security formerly known as the House of Un-American Activities Committee chaired by Richard Ichord a staunch anti-communist. GOOD condition. Minor to moderate toning some staining and minor soiling with light rusting to the staples. Minor creasing and wrinkling. Government printing Office unknown
