1874ref. 019486Boston: White Smith and Company 1874. Wraps. Good. Folio. Appears to have been disbound from a larger work. Sheet music to a song sung by Charles B. Hicks and his troupe the Georgia Minstrels. Hicks was an African-American performer and minstrel troupe manager and publicist being one of the few to be successful in the white dominated genre. Top of the cover dedicates this "To Charles B. Hicks." The cover itself is a lithograph by John H. Bufford drawing on stereotypes and idealizations of what the white US public imagined Black life to be like using imagery to portray an older Black gentleman theoretically reflecting wistfully back on life in slavery. GOOD condition. Spine edge rough from extraction. Minor soiling and toning with a few small stains. White, Smith and Company unknown
1847ref. 022598No Place: No publisher 1847. Unbound. Fair. No publisher place or date. Perhaps Daily Tribune Printer. Chicago: 1847. Single sheet 17 by 8 ¼ inches when unfolded. Presumably removed from "Report of the Survey of the Route of the Galena and Chicago Railroad" by Richard P. Morgan in 1847. Map matches that held by the Newberry Library in their copy of that report. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was chartered in 1836 but did not start construction until 1848. It took several years to achieve its goal of reaching the Galena lead mines but did prove its profitability by offering freight services on already completed lines. After its initial completion the line expanded to other lines reaching the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Richard Morgan was the civil engineer overseeing the initial construction and this map reflects the original intended route while the actual route differed slightly when nearing Galena due to the rights of another railroad. FAIR/GOOD condition ex-library and disbound. Historical Society blindstamp in Lake Michigan. Heavy browning to a portion of the center of the map and left edge. 1 ½ inch closed tear in the lower center of the map with a 2 inch tear at the lower center right edge. Minor crease and tear at the left edge with the right edge rather tattered from removal. Pencil notes on the reverse. No publisher unknown
