Rara. Nice example of De Fer's wall map of the world, first published in 1700. The text notes that the map is a reduction of De Fer's 4 sheet wall map of the world, first issued in 1695. De Fer states that this map is the first map to be prepared based upon the astronomical observations of the Royal Academy of Sciences. In fact, it would appear that different sources entirely have been consulted for California, Japan and Australia.Australia is shown as substantially incomplete and still attached to new Guinea. New Zealand appears in partial outline. The conjectural land bridge from Asia to America is still in evidence. The Mississippi River has its confluence with the Gulf of Mexico considerably west of its true course, based upon La Salle's eroneous reports. There are many more place names on this 2 sheet edition of the wall map. The scientific comentary is quite remarkable and detailed.Engraved by Van Loon, the map includes vignettes show thunder, lightening, tempests and tides, volcanoes, etc. Celestial observations are shown at the top. Etching with fine original colour, good condition. Rare. Shirley, The Mapping of the World, n. 600.
Tooley 275: “The iconographic model of this view is the engraving printed by Georg Baltazar Probst in 1730, after Bernard Werner’s drawing. As usual, the view is not reliable on an architectonical point of view, for it refers to the classical nordic style, in which the multitude of domes, bell towers and high poles ends in hollow covers, typical of Mitteleuropean cities”.. Rara. Woodcut map with fine colouring, set in a text page of a Bible printed in Wittenberg. A rare edition of this somewhat curious map of Europe, Africa, and Asia is to be found in apocalyptic literature originally emanating from Wittenberg in 1530 or even 1529. The map was first used by the printer Hans Luft to illustrate two works: one a commentary on the prophet Daniel by Martin Luther (1530) and another linking the vision of Daniel with the assaults of the Turks on the perimeters of Christian Europe at the time. The wood cut map is showing the four beasts of Daniel's Dream Map. The Wittenberg World Map, more commonly known in English as Daniel’s Dream Map, is probably the most mystical world map of all time. At the time of its first publication as the sixty-first world map to go into print, it was, on the one hand, a depiction of the Old World, based on the Ptolemaic world view but including a number of recent Spanish and Portuguese discoveries, but on the other, a visualization of the prophet Daniel’s apocalyptic dream of the four kingdoms. There are fourteen different versions of Daniel’s Dream Map, with twenty printing blocks. All the versions are produced in woodcut technique. According to Ernst Gallner this is the first version of the map “The first mention of Daniel’s Dream Map is made in a commentary on the prophet Daniel by Justus Jonas and Philipp Melanchthon in December 1529 and immediately afterwards in January 1530 in an interpretation of the book of the prophet Daniel by Martin Luther, both published by Hans Lufft in Wittenberg. This version is referred to in the following as the original version. From this time on, the map appears in a number of Lutheran, German or German-influenced bibles and theological books of the 16th up to the mid.18th century, and in a book on the history of the Jews by Flavius Josephus. These later variants partially copy the original, whereby some of the artists, contrary to the wish of the time for geographical accuracy, increasingly alter the outlines of the continents, with visionary aspects taking precedence over correct cartographic depiction. The only variant to occur in a Latin bible is a schematic, abstract map by Tobias Stimmer” (cfr. The Wittenberg World Map). R. W. Shirley, "The Mapping of the world", 65A; Kaarten in Bijbels, W.C. Attribuita a Giovanni Francesco Camocio (cfr. At the bottom, in the center of the panel, a beautiful allegorical vignette shows a dragon with a crescent moon on his head - symbol of the Turkish enemy - attacked and subdued by the lion rampant of Venice and the Habsburg eagle. Very rare work, lacking editorial indications. Attributed to Giovanni Francesco Camocio (cfr. Bifolco-Ronca, Cartografia e topografia italiana del XVI secolo, p. 1605). The plate depicts the Battle of Lepanto, the naval engagement in the waters off southwestern Greece between the allied Christian forces of the Holy League and the Ottoman Turks during an Ottoman campaign to acquire the Venetian island of Cyprus, which took place on October 7, 1571.Early in 1570 the Ottoman sultan, Selim II, demanded that the Venetian hand over the island of Cyprus. When the Venetians refused to cede the island, invaded it in 1570.Pope Pius V persuaded Philip II of Spain to join with Venetians to defeat the Turkish attack on Cyprus. Genoa, Savoy, and the Knights of Saint John also agreed to send forces. The Holy League fleet consisted of 108 venetian galley, 81 Spanish galley, and 32 others provided by the pope and other allies. The Turkish fleet consisted of 270 galleys, which were faster and more maneuverable than the Christians'ship but were also smaller and less well protected. The Turkish commander was Uuuch Ali, a former Christian slave who had renounced his religion. The ability of the Christians to fire down onto the decks of the smaller Turkish ships placed the Turkish forces at a serious disadvantage. The two fleets made a magnificent sight as they closed. Each side hoped to overawe the other by its apperance and so gain a psychological advantage before the battle started. The galleys were richly decorated with gilded carvings and colorful banners, while the soldiers and naval officers wore striking uniforms and polished armor. After repulsing the first Turkish assault, the Christians gradually got the upper hand. When Müezzenzade Ali Pasha was shot and killed, Turkish resistance began to break. Seeing the collapse of the rest of theTurkish fleet, Uluch Ali broke off his fight against the Christian right flank and made good his escape with 47 galleys. The Turks lost over 200 ships, while 30.000 of their men was killed and 4000 taken prisoners. Christian losses included 12 galleys sunk, 7500 dead, and 8000 injured. In all, the battle had lasted just three hours. The victory against the Turkish army they stopped the advance in Europe, protecting Rome from invasion. The event at the time was really remarkable and sensational, even attracting the interest of many artists. There are different interpretations of the subject in Venice, due to all merchants, engravers and cartographers such as Nelli, Zenoi, Bertelli, Rota and Camocio same, which are known two more different depictions of the theme. Etching and engraving, impressed on contemporary paper and irregularly trimmed to the copperplate with partial loss of engraved portion; reconstructive restoration to lower margin, otherwise in good condition. Rare map of the city, with vertical projection, oriented with the north at the top.The map was published for the first time in 1829, and is undoubtedly the most accurate and significant map of Papal Rome in the nineteenth century. Wide key-legend on the left side and at the bottom right list of the XIV districts. It is represented the only city within the perimeter of the walls that stands out clearly on the white background. Cardinal Cesare Guerrieri, first president of the Congregazione dei Catasti (later Censo) from 1816 to 1832, had this map engraved and published, based on the manuscript maps of the Catasto Urban ordered by PIO VII in 1818 and completed in 1822. A second issue of the map comes to light in 1854, reprint of the original plates, which contains the indication of the iron bridge built next to Ponte Rotto. The map was then definitively amended in 1866 - our edition. It is the most accurate image of the town just before it became capital of Italy. The iron bridge appears in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini (1863) and the tobacco factory (1863) is indicated with the opposite Piazza Matai (1864). There are the railway lines at Termini (1862) while the travellers' building (1867) is obviously missing. Finally, shows the first part of Via Nazionale, traced in 1866.Etching, printed from 4 plates on 4 sheets of contemporary paper, cut, applied on canvas and mounted in a box. Josephinischen Landesaufnahme [...] Rara. Etching, circa 1645/50, signed on the lower right-hand plate. Unusual panoramic view of the city, with a view of various monuments, described in a 9-point legend at the bottom in Italian and French, including: 1. Vestigij del Tempio della Pace . 2. Chiesa di S.ta Francesca Romana . 3. Vigna Fanesia . 4. Vestigij del Palazzo Maggiore. 5. Vestigij della Casa di Cicerone. 6. St. Maria liberatrice . 7. St. Pietro Montorio. 8. Frontespitio dell'Acqua Paula. 9. Colonne restate del Tempio di Giove Statore. The Basilica, in the foreground, is drawn in great detail, as is the panorama of the city, where numerous architectural works are recognisable. As with the general view of Rome, this panorama was probably engraved "from a drawing made ad vivum by L. de Lincher, a little-known French draughtsman who was active in Rome in those years and supplied his drawings to various engravers, including his fellow countryman Francois Collignon" (cf. Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 164). Silvestre, engraver and draughtsman, was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 he travelled in Italy; there are records of his presence in the Peninsula again in 1643 and 1653. His style was rather loose at first, but from 1643 onwards it became more refined and delicate, acquiring accuracy and precision without being dry, sometimes resembling that of Jacques Callot or Stefano della Bella, with whom he was friends. Alongside the evidence for ancient Rome, he soon showed great interest in the "modern" city, becoming one of the forerunners of vedutism - not only in the field of engraving - anticipating artists such as Lievin Cruyl and Gaspar van Wittel. Beautiful proof, with wide margins, vertical folds due to storage - folded several times and stored in the album - in excellent condition. Rare.
Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 167). Panoramic view of Rome taken from the Orti Farnesiani, with the Roman Forum in the foreground. The heraldic coat of arms of Louis XIV, with the arms of France and Navarre, is engraved in the center with the inscription Dédié au Roy. The layout of this view of Campo Vaccino, dedicated to Louis XIV, ranging from the Capitol to the Basilica of Maxentius, belongs to the second phase of his production, marked by extreme precision in the representation of the buildings. It is likely that the artist chose as a point of view the Horti Farnesiani on the Palatine, which allowed him a view of the city from above. In addition to the depiction of ancient monuments, the view is characterized, albeit in the background, by the presence of numerous modern buildings in the north-eastern area of Rome, including the church of S. Maria di Loreto, Villa Medici, the Quirinale and the palace of Cardinal Mazzarino at the Quattro Fontane (see Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 167). 1652Acquaforte, 1652, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra Israel SIlvestre delineavit et sculpt. l'anne 1652 in Parigi. It is likely that Vivot, a common gentleman of the King's chamber, appointed in 1670 as keeper of antiques, commissioned Silvestre this view to dedicate it to Louis Hesselin, Seigneur de Condé French aristocrat, government official, patron and collector. The Basilica, in the foreground, is drawn with great detail, as well as the panorama of the city, where many architectural works are recognizable. The choice of the point of view of this Roman view, taken from the Vatican Hill, behind St. Peter's Basilica, is unusual. Also in this work, always very detailed according to the typical style of the artist, the influence of Callot's engravings is strong, both in the language and in the construction of the view, as confirmed by the foreground with the Vatican walls (see Barbara Jatta in "Roma Veduta" p. 168). 1748Acquaforte e bulino, 1748, firmata sulla pietra con la scala in basso al centro "Piranesi e Nolli incisero". Bibliografia Scaccia Scarafoni n. 227; Marigliani, 190; Frutaz CLXIX a-c; Wilton-Ely 1994, n. 1007. Etching and engraving, 1748, signed on stone with scale at bottom center "Piranesi e Nolli incisero". Famous map of Rome, engraved by Giovanni Battista Nolli and Carlo Nolli, beautifully enriched with decorative elements engraved by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The map depicts the center of Rome on a large backdrop unfolded by the putto in the upper right. On the upper left a putto holds the coat of arms of Cardinal Alessandro Albani, to whom the work is dedicated, as shown in the cartouche below. On the left side, below the putto holding the coat of arms, departs a legend with a list of one hundred and seventy places of interest, palaces, monuments, and churches, which continues on the right border. At the bottom center, on the ruins of a pedestal, is the title. The lower part of the composition shows a mirror image of St. Peter's Basilica, the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme by Pietro Passalacqua and Domenico Gregorini, the Trevi Fountain by Nicola Salvi, and the facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore by Ferdinando Fuga. The map is known as Nolli's "Small Plan"; small to distinguish it from the famous large relief, imprinted on 12 sheets (plus 6 of index), of which this map represents the reduction. It is numbered 33-34 because it followed, in the complete publication, the 6 index sheets of the wall map. The title is given at the bottom, within the pedestal of the Trajan column. Next to it, within an architectural fragment on which is the "scala in palmi romani d'architettura", is the signature of engravers C. Nolli and G.B. Piranesi. G.B. Nolli's dedication to Cardinal Alessandro Albani is dated "Roma il dì primo del 1748." The indication of publication is in the flap, folded, of the cartouche on the right side. Etching, impressed on contemporary laid paper, complete with margins, light and diffuse browning, minimal abrasions, otherwise in good condition. Scalimetro in palmi romani. Men. Famous topographical map of Rome, a reworking, on the invention of Giovanni Battista Nolli, of Leonardo Bufalini's xylographic plan depicting the city in 1551. The plan was sold together with Nolli's large and small plans, of which it constitutes Tables 35 and 36. It was engraved by Franco Monaco and Carlo Nolli, whose signature can be read at lower left. Nolli made no attempt to rectify inconsistencies of the Bufalini map when he prepared the reduced copy. The Popolo trivium still has its unequal angles, and the Circus Maximus is still semicircular at both ends instead of one. He did, however, give greater relief than the original to the densely populated part of the city by shading in the city blocks. This is the same graphical convention he used on his own map. He maintained Bufalini's emphasis on antiquity by copying them exactly as in the original. Indeed he acknowledges this aspect by including views of ancient buildings at the bottom, where the map appears to be scrolled up, so as to reveal the "Colonnacce," a broken aqueduct, and the Pantheon (with Baroque additions) in the lower left corner, and the three ruins of the Forum Boarium in the lower right hand corner: The round Temple of "Mater Matuta," the Arch of Janus (with Medieval additions) and the Temple of "Fortuna Virilis." The map was engraved, as signed, by Franco Monaco and Carlo Nolli. On the upper left, the cartouche with the dedication to the Cardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzaga. Etching with engraving, a fine impression on contemporary laid paper, with margins, perfect condition. Bibliografia Frutaz, Le piante di Roma, CLXIX a-c.
1561Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1561. Esemplare in meravigliosa coloritura coeva. - ORIGINAL COLOURING -Etching with engraving, about 1561. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, in perfect condition. Example in wonderful contemporary coloring. The map of Ruscelli is very interesting for its representation of the five known continents, linked together like a continuous surface. This map shows a projection of the Earth's surface rather obsolete already at the time of its publication. Previously, other cartographers, starting from Martin Waldseemuller in 1507, had questioned the assertion of Columbus that Asia and America form a single continent. The travels of Magellan and other explorers, which allowed him to finally know the true extent of the Pacific Ocean, gave further support to these concerns, although leave open the possibility of a free America-Asia to the north. Around the middle of the sixteenth century, however, this latter hypothesis was completely discredited, to be replaced by the idea of a hypothetical "Strait of Anian." Another interesting feature of this map is the plot of "lines of sextants" radiant 16 focal points. The sextant was an indispensable tool to measure and track, the navigation route. In this case, the lines drawn on the map are exclusively ornamental and illustrative, because the paper is too small to be functional. The map comes from Ptolemy's Geographia, edited by Ruscelli, published in Venice in multiple editions between 1561 and 1598. The map is based on the same work of Giacomo Gastaldi (1548), which probably also personally drew these maps, engraved by the brothers Livio and Giulio Sanuto. The peculiarity of these maps is that they are recorded two for plate and subsequently cut, consequently the sign of the copper appears only on three sides for each map. The text of Ruscelli and his maps are considered as the best modern atlas to the first version of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelius of 1570. Only their ubiquity prevents an assessment supported in the antique market.Girolamo Ruscelli (Viterbo 1504 - Venice 1566), scholar and polygraph native of Viterbo, was formed in Rome but soon moved in Veneto where he treated, for typography Valgrisi, numerous editions of Italian classics. Ruscelli was also the curator of the revised and expanded version of Ptolemy's Geographia, printed in Venice several times between 1561 and the end of the century. The maps are based on those by Giacomo Gastaldi for the Venetian edition of 1548, and engraved by the brothers Sanuto.Example of Ruscelli’s maps in contemporary coloring are absolutely rare. A large double-hemisphere map with ornate cartouches in each cusp. Published after Cook's first circumnaviation it has been updated with his discoveries: New Zealand is shown properly as two main islands and the east coast of Australia has been corrected, although still with Tasmania connected to the mainland. In the North Pacific the spurious North West Passage is shown. This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing “à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique 1799”. As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas containing these maps has ever been listed in any bibliography. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini’s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 Atlas Universelle, and from the plates of Antonio Zatta’s Nuovo Atlante published in 1796. Santini’s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. The modern bibliography Terre di Langobardia describes some of the maps depicting the Repubblica Cisalpina, presenting them as part of Remondini’s “Atlas très Nouveau”, which was printed starting from 1800. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811. I personally know 61 maps which were part of the project. Copper engraving, fine hand color, in excellent condition.
