Front cover missing otherwise complete; some very short tears to edges of first few pages; one inch tear to first page lower spine aspect; mild foxing first page only; fuffling of fore-edge corners mostly upper; a little worming involving the upper margin of pages 171-194 not involving text or illustrations; otherwise pages clean and binding strong. Except for the absence of the front cover none of these defects interfere with text or illustrations. Rare in any condition or edition. Electricity as its delivered today by transmission lines did not become common in homes until the 1920s. The Electric Storage Battery Company ESB founded near Philadelphia in 1888 sold its chloride accumulator battery for $400 plus installation and the cost of wiring. Pamphlet 4" x 7 3/4": 20 p. with illustrations. Bound with two staples in the original printed paper wrappers. The ink stamps of a Williamsport Pennsylvania "local representative" appear on the front panel. Minor creasing along the extremities; otherwise very good. A fine fresh copy in the publisher's handsome burgundy cloth with only the slighttest rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Contents clean and sound. A collection of reports histories and speeches relating to this independent battery organized and paid for by the Chicago Board of Trade. They are notable for being the only "flying artillery" unit in the Civil War on either side having attached mobile cannons to chariots which were pulled by horses and could be moved quickly. They saw action at Stones River Chickamauga and in the Atlanta Campaign among other places. The Introduction notes that most of the records relating to the unit were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and most of the reminiscenes herein are taken from the deliberate reconciliation between then-living soldiers' reminiscences and those records which surived from Federal archives.
