1835rif. 42285London Richard Taylor 1835. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1835 - Part II. Pp. 263-274. Clean and fine. First appearance of this paper in which Faraday describes his improvements of the Voltaic battery."This paper relates altogether to the practical construction and use of the voltaic battery. Guided by the principles developed in former series the author concluded that in voltaic instruments in which the copper surrounded the zinc there was no occasion for insulation of the contiguos coppers provided they did not come into metallic contact; and therefore in the cionstruction of some new instruments he interposed paper only between the coppers instead of the usual insulating plate of porcelain or glass."Abstract.From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' the Farday current the electronic state of matter the identity of electricity from different sources equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition electrostatic induction hydro-electricity diamagnetism relation of gravity to electricity atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity. unknown

1862rif. 119031862. Barnard George N. Battery No. 4 Near Yorktown 1862 documents Union siege artillery operations during the Peninsula Campaign providing visual evidence of large-scale military engineering and heavy ordnance deployment under General George B. McClellan's command. The photograph supports research into Civil War siege warfare artillery technology and the logistical systems required to construct and operate fortified gun positions against Confederate defenses. Produced as part of Brady's Album Gallery series the image contributes to the early photographic record of organized military campaigns and the material infrastructure of Union war strategy. Brady's Album Gallery No. 375. Battery No. 4 Near Yorktown Mounting 13 inch Mortars each weighing 20000 pounds East South End. Copyright 1862 Barnard & Gibson. Albumen photograph. The composition shows three large 13-inch mortars installed in prepared earthen emplacements dominating the foreground with their elevated barrels and reinforced platforms. Several Union soldiers in uniform wearing kepi caps stand adjacent to the artillery pieces their scale emphasizing the massive size of the weapons. The mortars are positioned within a constructed battery with visible earthworks and structured placement indicating deliberate engineering design. These siege guns were capable of firing heavy explosive shells in high arcs intended to penetrate or bypass fortified defensive positions. The photograph records both the physical construction of the battery and the personnel assigned to operate it. The image originates from the Union Army's methodical approach to siege warfare during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign when extensive artillery networks were assembled to pressure Confederate fortifications at Yorktown. The use of large-caliber mortars reflects the increasing reliance on industrial-scale weaponry and engineered battlefield environments. Barnard's photographs disseminated through Brady's publishing enterprise formed part of a systematic effort to document the war visually shaping contemporary and later understanding of the scale and organization of Civil War military operations. One light vertical crease at center; otherwise very good condition. A strong visual record of Union artillery power and siege methodology during a critical early campaign of the war. unknown
