1840réf. 354279Mexico: Impresso Por Igancio Cumplido 1840. 964pp. plus one plate. Contemporary pictorial wrappers. Spine reinforced with archival tape minor dust soiling. Very good. 964pp. plus one plate. Variant issue without priority also printed in New Orleans in the same year. The text of a letter sent to Mexican president Anastasio Bustamente calling for a convention to address various ills affecting the newly independent state of Mexico. Estrada is heavy on political theory and with good reason. At the time of publication Mexican democracy was in a crisis. In July Gen. Urrea acting on behalf of Valentine Farias actually stormed the National Palace and took Bustamente prisoner. Bustamente soon escaped but the ensuing conflict between Farias and Bustamente for legitimacy had a devastating effect on hopes for a true democracy of the kind Estrada extols here. An excellent sample of Mexican political history and thought. SUTRO COLLECTION p.739 OCLC 7320339 Impresso Por Igancio Cumplido unknown books

1953réf. 236501953. Bright Road publicity photograph group 1953 documenting a major studio film that departed from postwar racial problem pictures by centering Black teachers children and families without making racial conflict its narrative engine. Featuring an all black cast Dorothy Dandridge plays the idealistic teacher Jane Richards while Harry Belafonte in his feature film debut appears as the supportive principal Mr. Williams. Released one year before Brown v. Board of Education the film presents Black professionalism and segregated institutions through the story of Black teachers running a rural school guiding students through both the classroom emotions and adolescence without relying on a white protagonist or a plot centered on racial confrontation. Photo archive of five silver gelatin publicity photographs each 8 x 10 inches Metro Goldwyn Mayer 1953. The photographs show Dandridge writing "I am the new teacher. My name is Miss Richards" on a classroom blackboard; Dandridge addressing a gathering of Black women in the principal's office as Belafonte listens; Belafonte speaking outside the school with Philip Hepburn as C. T. Young; Hepburn kneeling beside a hunting dog; and Dandridge supervising children making Christmas decorations beneath a classroom display reading "Christmas around world." Printed borders identify Bright Road as "A Metro Goldwyn Mayer picture" and carry Loew's copyright National Screen Service distribution language production numbers and the code "53/221." Versos bear Photofest credit and return labels editorial inscriptions and publication markings. Mary Elizabeth Vroman adapted the film from "See How They Run" her 1951 short story based on her work in rural Alabama classrooms. Her participation in the screenplay made her the first African American woman admitted to the Screen Writers Guild extending the film's representation of Black educators into its authorship. Dandridge's role preceded her Academy Award nominated performance in Carmen Jones while Belafonte's debut began a screen career that repeatedly joined performance with civil rights activism. The film's restraint could obscure the legal segregation surrounding its Alabama school but its nearly all Black social world rejected Hollywood's usual dependence on racial confrontation or white authority to make Black life legible. Light surface wear edge creasing scattered stains editorial markings and localized image loss to one print. Overall in good condition. A concentrated visual record of Black education professional authority and authorship within 1950s Hollywood studio production. unknown

Cattawi Bey, Kasr el Nil, Cairo, at the price of P.T. 10. It contains a good deal of useful information regarding touring of all kinds in Egypt and abroad including a list of recommended hotels and garages throughout the country. "The president of the Association which was founded in 1932, was H.E. Sir Miles Lampson (1880-1964). He was a British diplomat who was appointed High Commissioner for Egypt and Sudan in 1934. As a result of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty in December 1936, to which Lampson was a signatory, Britain loosened its grip on Egypt and the post title was changed to Ambassador to Egypt and High Commissioner for Sudan in 1936. Lampson continued in this office until 1946. Vice presidents were Sir Stenson Cooke and J. A. Crawford. According to the ETA's service page of the guide, the purpose of the association can be determined as "Association was formed to provide a long-felt want in Egypt, that is, a touring club in the true sense of the word, devoted to the interests of all kinds of travelers. It's a non-profit making co-operative organization with the aim of making the path of the motorist, the airman, the camper, and every other kind of traveler pleasanter and smoother. The E.T.A. is officially recognized by the Egyptian Government and already in its short existence has grown enormously, being able to offer the following very real services to its members: Expert and detailed advice on all touring matters. Expert advice on motoring matters and vetting of cars. Free itineraries to all parts of Egypt and abroad. Reminders are sent to all members when a car and driving license is due for renewal. Renewal of car and driving licenses. Free legal defense for motoring offenses. Triptyques, carnets, and all documents for foreign touring, including passport arrangements. [i.e. the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme], of which the E.T.A. is a member. Recommended hotels and garages throughout Egypt and the Near East. Insurance for members can be effected at the most advantageous rates, and advice is given. Cars can be driven to any part of Egypt, by experienced drivers. Guides are provided. Other benefits, it is hoped, will be given in due of course.". Not located in OCLC. "1938-39 Edition" of the series (not published more than two years) is located in OCLC in no. 862336537.
