1840réf. 354279Mexico: Impresso Por Igancio Cumplido 1840. 964pp. plus one plate. Contemporary pictorial wrappers. Spine reinforced with archival tape minor dust soiling. Very good. 964pp. plus one plate. Variant issue without priority also printed in New Orleans in the same year. The text of a letter sent to Mexican president Anastasio Bustamente calling for a convention to address various ills affecting the newly independent state of Mexico. Estrada is heavy on political theory and with good reason. At the time of publication Mexican democracy was in a crisis. In July Gen. Urrea acting on behalf of Valentine Farias actually stormed the National Palace and took Bustamente prisoner. Bustamente soon escaped but the ensuing conflict between Farias and Bustamente for legitimacy had a devastating effect on hopes for a true democracy of the kind Estrada extols here. An excellent sample of Mexican political history and thought. SUTRO COLLECTION p.739 OCLC 7320339 Impresso Por Igancio Cumplido unknown books

Second edition of the second American book of road maps following Christopher Colles' exceedingly rare Survey of the Roads of the United States 1789 and the first road map book to provide detailed maps of the road from Philadelphia north through New Jersey to New York and from Philadelphia south through Delaware Maryland and Virginia to Washington. Joshua John Moore and Thomas W. Jones were young surveyors in the employ of the Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey. From several letters they wrote to Carey during the course of the survey Lea & Febiger papers PHi a clear picture emerges of the extremely difficult task they had undertaken. On June 29 1801 they wrote from New York: "We should have written to you before this had not fatigue of our daily Journies rendered repose indispensable after the finishing of our Notes and Traverses. After twelve days driving our way through an immense multitude of Questioners Observers laughters & Critics who generally thronged around us at every place to our great discomposure at first . we are at length arrived here. If astonishment would ensure success to a work we may entertain strong hopes indeed of ours; but it has nearly exhausted our health as every violent effort naturally must." Upon completion of the surveys the maps were drawn by the surveyors. They locate crossroads streams taverns churches and other public buildings and occasionally private houses. The text describes the various towns through which the roads pass. In this second edition published two years after the first edition of 1802 the descriptive text has been extensively corrected and expanded. The maps are identical to those in the earlier edition and are printed from the same plates. unknown books

1957réf. 351059Honolulu: Supreme Council of EFB Students 1957. 4p. 8.5x11 inch newsletter toned along edges splitting along the spinefold. Hilario Camino Moncado established the Filipino Federation of America in 1925 in Los Angeles California. It was also known at various times as the Filipino World Federation and the Filipino Crusaders World Army. As one of the fraternal organizations appealing to the small but growing Filipino immigrant community the FFA distinguished itself from competitors by accentuating "clean living" and rules of moral conduct. Moncado earned a law degree and sought to portray the immigrant community as responsible and healthy in contrast to the then-prevalent depictions of uneducated gamblers. Much less publicly the FFA developed a set of religious teachings that held Moncado to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ by way of José Rizal the Filipino patriot executed in the waning days of Spanish rule. Moncado's birthday was changed to make him appear to have been born after Rizal's death so that his identity as Rizal's reincarnation would be more plausible. After the achievement of Philippine independence and limitations on immigration the FFA turned almost entirely to spiritual rather than political objectives and even sent missionaries back to the Philippines where there is still an active sect venerating Moncado as a religious figure. This newsletter was issued after his death summarizing the tenets of his faith. Supreme Council of EFB Students unknown books
