1793réf. 20083Ephrata: attributed to S Mayer 1793. Later printing. Original plain blue wrappers. Very good; a one inch tear into the text throughout probably caused by a thin string used to bundle this pamphlet with other items no loss. 12mo 24 pp. - printed on a thick Cloister paper. 1832réf. 16032Philadelphia: For the Author by H Hory 1832. First Edition. Contemporary leather backed boards. A good copy; some foxing throughout; joints chafed; binding rubbed. 8vo 376 8 pages Zünd was a graduate of the Royal Austrian Veterinary School. A student of such notables as Bidl Erdely and Langenbacher. The book offered here is no simple summary of remedies. It is a complex medical tract on veterinary medicine and diseases of the horse. It is unlike other American books of the period because it is written from an informed scientific viewpoint. Prior to Zünd's tract such treatises were based on a folk medicine tradition that circulated as small pamphlets among the agricultural communities. It is doubtful that Zünd's informed and lengthy book had a wide audience indicated by the fact that it was self-published in the farming communities where traditional "remedies" would have been hard to supplant. The final 8 pages of text contain a German/English medical vocabulary index to the text a final index arranged by wound type for quick reference and the errata. The book also bears the contemporary ownership signature of John L Meyer Dec. 15 1832. Tucher # 2221; S & S # 17203. For the Author by H Hory hardcover books

1835réf. 14063London: C Daly 1835. First English Edition. original cloth backed paper boards and label. Good; front hinge split; institutional bookplate but no accessioning marks. 8vo. An important book. Bloomfield comments: 'Louis was one of the greatest of the French clinican-pathologists of the early nineteenth century. He had a remarkable capacity for precise unbiased observations and for clear and beautifully written descriptions. Louis confined his observations to tuberculosis and it seems to us that he gave a clear over-all picture of the disease hardly surpassed by Laennec. The book is in two parts. The first part deals systematically with the lesions illustrated by careful autopsy reports many of which might well have come from a modern department of pathology. In the second part the clinical features are admirably detailed. Thevarious stages of the disease--early late etc.--are discussed as well as the symptoms of involvement of organs other than the lung. As with Laennec any serious student of tuberculosis must carefully study Louis's book; one cannot do justice to it in a few words.' 1847réf. 12043Bremen: F C Dubbers 1847. First Edition. Contemporary marbled boards. Very good. 8vo viii 1 - 126 pp. A succinct and rare manual for ship-board medical treatment written by a 'practical' physician that is accompanied by a supplement or appendix listing the medicines contained in the medical kit and finally a brief section on herbs and their use in cooking. Indicating the prevalence of ailments aboard ship the text is divided into sections dealing with fever inflammation nervous ailments gastric ailments infectious disease esp. typhus. Wounds etc. are briefly covered. Emphasis is on true illness. It is remarkable that this book was written by an apprenticed 'physician' who considers each ailment from practical experience rather than a clincal perspective. Such manuals do appear in English; they are usually brief. This German language manual is unusual since there was little voyaging originating in Germany at this time - coastal trips being the norm and therefore not out of range of quick medical assistance if needed. Therefore its detailed text outlining symptoms and treatment and the list of medicines are beyond what is encountered in the English language pamphlets of the period. Unlocated. 1862réf. 13044New York 1862. Unique. Later plain brown wrappers. Very good. 4to. 42 pp. with corrections recto and verso. The original 42 page fully corrected holograph manuscript in Mott's hand. It was written at the request of the Sanitary Commission at the height of the Civil War. A remarkable essay on wound haemorrhages that begins by citing Dryden's description of the death of the Tyrrhenian Etruscan queen and moves rapidly to a description of trooper's in the field trying to revive a comrade in a feint from a gunshot wound. Mott rhetorically admonishes the friends by stating they have only succeeded in re-opening the wound that is killing their friend by interfering with the natural clotting mechanisms of the body. In this manner he launches his essay in fact an appeal for the introduction and ready availability of tourniquets for combat soldiers. The essay considers the proper application of tourniquets and the consequences of this stop-gap procedure. In the course of the paper he cites and quotes a letter his son sent from the battlefield. Accompanying the manuscript are three sheets from the printed version with additional holograph corrections extensive in Mott's hand. Known for his aggressive and pioneering approach to surgery Mott was the perfect choice for this subject. It is written for the battle front with the aim of bringing immediate aid to men who were certain to die if left alone or to ill defined care. It presents a course of action in order to prolong life for the surgeon. An important and at times poignant manuscript written by one of the authorities of American medicine. See DAB XIII 290 - 291; G - M for the author's numerous entries. unknown books

1858réf. 69147Portland ME: David Tucker 1858. .a bed full of boiled potatoes jugs of hot water and bountiful potations of gin and lobelia A curious account of the life of Leonard Trask 1805–1861 who suffered serious spinal injury and subsequent deformity following a fall from a horse: "About the year 1833 while Mr. T. was riding on horseback through a neighboring town a 'luckless hog' in the highway hearing the approach of a horseman took fright and as is often the case with that perverse animal to flee from danger took the opposite direction from a place of safety and rushed directly under the horse's feet. The affrightened horse as a matter of course stumbled and plunged throwing his rider directly over his head. Mr. T. was thrown with great force upon the ground receiving the full force of the fall upon his neck and shoulders" pp.14-15. In the years that followed his neck and spine began to curve and he began to bow forward a condition now known as ankylosing spondylitis which was exacerbated by further accidents in 1840 and 1853. Trask's condition stymied doctors and the present pamphlet details an array of torturous treatments such as blistering cupping and bleeding. "Being tired of enduring the treatment of physicians of the 'regular practice' which was only adding pain and torture to the suffering he already endured.Mr. T. had recourse to Dr. J.W. Smith alias J.W. Kittridge of the Thompsonian mode of practice." This is almost certainly a reference to the Thomsonian movement an alternative practice founded by Samuel Thomson in Vermont in the early 19th century. Thomson and his followers spoke of the dangers of bloodletting advocating instead for botanical remedies that raised the temperature and induced perspiration. Trask's Thomsonian treatment included "a bed full of boiled potatoes jugs of hot water and bountiful potations of gin and lobelia" p.20. Trask published works such as this pamphlet in order to supplement his income and it is now considered the first published work on ankylosing spondylitis a rare form of arthritis that affects the spine. Scarce in commerce. We can trace just four copies in the auction record since 1946. Original yellow wrappers featuring a wood-engraving of Leonard Trask within a decorative border.
