rif. 79065Single-page manuscript from an 1839 deposition filed on behalf of an Ohio woman swearing she was of “good moral character and chaste conduct”. The reasons for the deposition are not made clear; however it is likely Nancy Chambers née Delong 1809–69 stood accused of sexual relations with someone other than her husband just before their marriage. Signed by eight of her friends the deposition states specifically they were aware of her conduct from July 1833 until May 1834. On May 14 1834 she married Elias Chambers 1806-70 a brick mason. Their first son Matthew was born 10 months after their marriage. The deposition was made August 5 1839 before a justice of the peace at the home of the accused’s friend in Cross Creek Township Ohio. At the time the Chambers had three children. They later moved to Illinois where two additional children were born. Chastity until marriage was a strong societal expectation for women during the 19th century. The divorce laws of the time would have favored the plaintiff’s husband under adultery laws and fraudulent contract if he discovered she was not a virgin. unknown
rif. List2943Likely Chicago area 1944. Single 5 x 8 inch journal with forty-two double-sided pages filled out and many more blank. Near fine. Offered here is an unusual document: a dream journal from the 1940s. Written by an anonymous woman the journal documents dreams from January and February of 1943 and 1944. Dream interpretation is an ancient practice with many varied purposes1 but given the rising popularity of psychoanalysis at the time in the US2 it is plausible that this journal was kept for therapeutic purposes. Indeed there would be quite a bit for an analyst to say about A.B.’s dreams. She recalls moments from dreams such as when “It seems that also I have a sexual organ very faint from no cause at all” January 15 1943 “It seems I almost have to bite my mother to make her let me go” January 16 and: “I had a dream of going to Chicago with my brother. We went to a hotel as husband and wife. He slept in the same bed but nothing sexual passed between us.” February 16 1944 One dream in particular deals in some detail which we omit with A.B.’s history of onanism or lack thereof. This dream includes the sensation that: “someone is trying to probe into the dark recesses of my ‘past’ to unearth the little secret hidden sins of childhood and the lapses of young girlhood and womanhood” February 9 a feeling that would likely be close to the truth if A.B. were in fact the subject of analysis. Other themes include work health and money and bizarre imagery such as “a left arm swaddled in a white surgical bandage from wrist to armpit” January 15. Overall an uncommon survival and a peculiar read of interest to dream interpreters and their historians. 1 J. Very good. Illus. Glossy wrappers slightly creased. 1772 A landmark document of the so-called "feminist sex wars" of the 1980s most copies of this conference program were preemptively seized and destroyed by Barnard College officials under pressure from activists associated with Women Against Pornography WAP. The episode remains a hotspot of conflicting allegations and rumor. Leading up to the date of the conference Ellen V. Futter then President of Barnard College became the focal point of an anti-pornography phone call campaign by WAP members and their allies. In response to the calls College officials confiscated 1500 copies of the Diary hours before the event was scheduled to begin. The booklet which had been intended for distribution to conference attendees consists of steering committee minutes personal narratives information about conference events and sex-positive artwork by feminist illustrators including erotic images that had provoked the ire of anti-pornography crusaders. Examples rarely surface. [Barnard College Women's Center]

1937rif. 001500New York: Dodd Mead & Company 1937. The Hill was first published in 1905. One of more than 50 novels written by its author it depicts the friendship between two boys who attend Harrow. Harrow School founded in 1572 is a highly prestigious boys boarding school in London still going strong today. 8vo size green cloth cover with navy blue titles on spine and navy blue titles and decorations on front cover. The cover appears to be an incomplete printing of the design that appeared on other books: Darker colored cloth books of the earlier 1900s dark blue or black had a illustration on the front cover of a hilly skyline with a tall building spire - which depicts the campus of Harrow School. This silhouette is made from the color of the clothbound book. The illustration on top of that is completed by two different colors on ink in green and white. In this book a later edition the cloth binding appears to be a shade of green represented by the color of the ink in the earlier version. You can see the very light embossing of the hillside and spire and you can see the void as the spire rises between the bands of navy blue ink that make up the design on front cover. These navy blue design elements are part of the sky background. Earlier editions would have used white ink to fill the voids between the navy blue ink and the embossed design of the hillside. It appears that there is a significant publishing error the the front cover design where an layer of white ink is missing. If one didn't know the design of earlier editions you might just take the cover for an abstract design. There is an embossed illustration on the spine of books on a shelf which also would have been filled in with green ink on the earlier edition and which is devoid of ink in this copy. The printing error has produced a unique cover. The book has 325 deckle edged pages with a unique toning or foxing that resembles a wood grain pattern please see our photos. This pattern appears throughout the book with varying degrees of darkness. Horace Vachell 1861 - 1955 was a prolific English author publishing novels 22 plays short stories essays and autobiographical works. Much of his writing features an idealized prosperous English way of life. Please see our photograph of the notation from a previous reader of this book - it is her recommendation. The book has a bumped and worn head and heel of spine sunned spine penciled name on fep which is creased at bottom corner note on half title page and some small white spots on front cover.
