1896ref. 170545London: Henry Hughes & Son Ltd 1896-1910. With a scarce set of byelaws for navigating Tower Bridge First edition documenting the river and the trade it facilitated at the turn of the 20th century. Evans's map and index published in 1905 record the locations owners and businesses associated with each wharf and was released four years before the creation of the Port of London Authority. We have traced one institutional copy at the National Archives. As trade and commerce into London grew over the 19th century the wharves along the Thames became increasingly important. However as there was no central authority and each wharf was owned by a different business merchants and sailors required detailed guides to both the physical and human geography of the river. Evans worked for the Erith and Dartford Lighterage Company a shipping agent established in 1898 and incorporated in 1902. Alongside details of who owned each wharf his index also includes records of high and low water times tables of distances and a list of moorings. This copy was perhaps used as a reference for foreign ships. There is a loosely inserted typescript letter in French sent by the General Steam Navigation Company on 19 August 1910 to one Jules Lagache referencing the map and giving him information on navigating the Thames. Also included is the presumed first edition 1896 of the navigation byelaws for Tower Bridge opened in 1894. This pamphlet details the visual and audible signals that ships must use at day night and in fog while outlining penalties for ignoring them. We have traced one institutional copy at the University of Virginia. 1923ref. 146010Paris: Albert Lévy 1923. With an outstanding provenance First and sole edition number 106 of 300 copies of this impressive and important monograph. This copy with a fine provenance: from the library of A. W. Bahr internationally renowned authority on and collector of Chinese art with his ownership stamps to volume I half-title. Abel William "Billy" Bahr 1877-1959 born in Shanghai to a German father and Chinese mother was brought up in China and later established himself as a coal merchant and general importer. "He was fluent in Chinese he embraced various aspects of Chinese culture and he had a close circle of Chinese friends - by no means a common state of affairs in the Shanghai of the period" Pearce p. 6. Bahr was the moving force in the groundbreaking 1908 Exhibition of Chinese Art held in Shanghai "the first exhibition in China that was made up exclusively of art objects" ibid. p. 21. Three years later he published Old Chinese Porcelain and Works of Art in China London: Cassell & Co. 1911 the de facto catalogue of the exhibition. His papers are held at the Smithsonian. For the French artist and designer Henri Rivière 1864-1951 it was Japanese art that held a particular fascination and he was an avid collector of both prints and ceramics. The present monograph followed his similar study of Islamic art La Céramique dans l'art musulman 1913 and is similarly beautifully produced the plates printed in lavish colour. The Chinese Korean and Japanese ceramics were taken mostly from private French collections including that of Rivière himself the celebrated grand amateur Raymond Koechlin the antiquities dealer Garbis Kalebdjian and the fashion designer Jacques Doucet. The preface is by Charles Vignier "the expert on Asian arts at the Hôtel Drouot the principal auction house in Paris. a key figure in introducing early Chinese art and later African art to avant-garde collectors in Paris including Henri Matisse and Roger Fry" Dumbarton Oaks retrieved 18 January 2021. 2 vols large folio. With 100 mounted colour plates additional integral colour illustrations in text leaves. Loose sheets as issued in decorated cloth portfolios with cloth ties patterned pastedowns. Ownership stamps to half-title. Cloth of first volume soiled general light browning and foxing to contents but illustrations fresh. A very good copy. Nick Pearce "Shanghai 1908: A. W. ref. 26973A Londres, Chez J. Nourse, & se trouve à Paris, Chez Desaint, 1767. (2), vii, (1, Fautes à Corriger), 511, (1) pp. 4to. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, joints starting to split but holding firm, a bit rubbed and worn. Weulersse, i, p. xxviii; Kress 6475; Goldsmiths 10269; Higgs 3979; INED 2794; Einaudi 3307 (the 8vo edition in 2 volumes); May, Le Mercier de la Rivière, 163. First edition, the rare 4to edition. The rare 4to edition by 'the ablest expositor of this (the physiocratic) system' (McCulloch). It was written following Le Mercier's retirement from Parliament in 1759. Praised by Adam Smith and Diderot amongst others, L'Ordre naturel was, according to Palgrave, considered more highly than l'Esprit des Loix by some contemporaries. The author argues that there is a natural law of property which is based on the physical order of nature, and which underlies all other laws. Taxation and the use of public revenue by the ruler are both governed by natural law of property. Schumpeter lists this work as the second textbook of Physiocrat orthodoxy.Catherina II of Russia invited the author to her court, and it provoked Voltaire's l'Homme aux quarante écus and Mably's vehement criticism in his Doutes proposés aux Philosophes économistes. - Faint library stamp on half-title, handwritten ex-libris of Lussac in blank upper outer margin of title.

Born in 1859 finisher Charles McLeish was apprenticed to Andrew Grieve in Edinburgh then came to London to work for the prestigious Riviere firm. When Cobden-Sanderson founded the Doves Bindery in 1893 he hired McLeish as the firm's finisher; McLeish held that estimable position until 1909 when he left to go into partnership with his son also named Charles who had apprenticed under Roger de Coverly. McLeish's expertise in applying the gilt decoration to bindings is evident here in the intricate tooling of the spine compartments which required applying individual small tools dozens of times and doing so with such exactness that only the most careful inspection will spot a couple of minute variations between one compartment and another. The scion of a wealthy banking family Samuel Rogers 1763-1855 first achieved fame with the publication in 1792 of "The Pleasures of Memory." After Italian travels during which he met Shelley and Byron in Pisa Rogers produced a first version of "Italy" in 1822 and issued a sequel in 1826 both of which sold poorly. He destroyed the unsold copies revised the poems and published them at his own expense in the present edition of 1830 our first volume embellished this time by illustrations. These were the work of two artists with very different propensities--Stothard 1755-1834 who did demure figure scenes and Turner 1775-1851 who provided landscape vignettes. The success of this edition was perhaps due as much to the artists as to the poet. Britannica describes Rogers as a "witty conversationalist" who "maintained an influential position as a leading figure in London society and as a generous host to brilliant company." Bound in here is an invitation to tea at his lovely home at 22 St James's Place: "Dear Katherine / If you & Miss Mallet / & Wm. have nothing better to do / pray come & drink tea with me / next Sunday the earlier the better. / Yours very truly Saml Rogers / St. James's Place / Thursday Evg." It is possible "Katherine" was London socialite Katherine Jane Canning daughter of British diplomat Stratford Canning 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe; Rogers inscribed a copy of the 1845 edition of his poems to her according to auction records. This is a handsomely bound copy with superior provenance of the first appearance of a breakthrough work in the field of English literature. Fielding had a profound influence in determining the development of the novel and this was the first great instrument of that influence. Although some of the names of the characters are facetious the events personalities and settings are all characterized by convincing verisimilitude. The book was begun as a spoof of Richardson's sentimental "Pamela" but it ended up on its own as one of the best novels of the period. The beautiful bindings by the leading English workshop Riviere and the sparkling condition here are characteristic of books from the collection of our earlier owner Robert Hoe 1839-1911 founding member and first president of the Grolier Club. According to Beverly Chew Hoe's library was "the finest America has ever contained." Hoe acquired illuminated manuscripts early printing French and English literature and very fine bindings; when his library was sold in 1911-12 it fetched nearly $2 million a record that held until the Streeter sale more than 50 years later.
