1987réf. 17744New York: The New Museum of Contemporary Art 1987. First Edition. Paperback. Very good/very good. First Edition. Paperback. 10" x 9.5". 85pp. Mild shelf contents clean and bright. Very good. Published just two years after Mendieta's death in 1985 this catalogue represents the first major museum retrospective of her work and remains a foundational document in her critical reception. Organized with the cooperation of Mendieta's estate and family - her sister Raquel Mendieta Harrington served on the exhibition committee - the volume gathers the artist's own unpublished statements alongside John Perreault's essay "Earth and Fire: Mendieta's Body of Work" and Petra Barreras del Rio's historical overview situating the Siluetas and earth-body works within feminist land art and diasporic Cuban contexts before that framework had fully solidified in the literature. Illustrated in black-and-white throughout with a selection of color plates reproducing key works from the Silueta Fetish and Tree of Life series the catalogue functions less as an exhibition record than as a primary archive of a body of work whose physical traces mostly no longer exist published while institutional and scholarly interest in Mendieta was still being formed rather than retrospectively assembled. 10" x 9.5". 85pp. Mild shelf contents clean and bright.
