FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 288 pp. ; 168 illus. 111 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Recent exhibitions and publications on Josef Albers 1888-1976 have established this influential artist as a true Renaissance man of modernism--a painter furniture designer glass artist writer pedagogue and even album cover designer. Published on the occasion of the first major retrospective of Josef Albers in more than 20 years and drawing on a wealth of information from the Albers archive this volume consolidates this broad perspective covering the full scope of Albers' achievement. The artist's career on both sides of the Atlantic is documented here from his Weimar Bauhaus beginnings to his tenure as a teacher at Black Mountain College to his years at Yale University and his considerable influence as a painter and theorist. The catalogue reproduces nearly 200 works including 12 works in glass produced between 1921 and 1932; nearly 30 photographs and photocollages many of which are previously unpublished; a selection of woodcuts and gouaches and several items of furniture; the seven record sleeves Albers designed for Command Records with their classic gatefold sleeves which Albers helped to conceive; the paintings for which he is so well known; and a selection of theoretical texts. Also included is a rare text by Wassily Kandinsky previously printed in a 1934 exhibition bulletin for a show of Alber's woodcuts at the Galleria del Milione in Milan. This volume gives the most comprehensive account of Albers' career to date. . 2011. 8836621414 . Silvana Editoriale paperback

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 64 pp. ; 68 color illustrations. -- with a bonus offer--; Southern California artist Steve Roden is known as more than a painter; his internationally acclaimed multi-media sound-driven works use musical scores that offer him a set of options to compose a segment of painting sculpture or other formal composition. This template results in a startlingly diverse array of images objects sounds and spaces. Roden's every artwork whatever its form is both familiar yet utterly unexpected. He's an eccentric virtuoso whose paintings look abstract but only in the way that a chair a tree a face or even a Pop-Tart becomes abstract the longer you look at it. This catalog of a 20-year mid-career survey of Roden's work includes an illustrated essay by curator Howard N. Fox and a CD with the four soundtracks from Roden installations. . 2010. 1893900142 . Elsewhere the tight screws of plough blades stack interlocked on a warehouse floor utilitarian subjects coalescing into a heady abstract pattern. From his first days as a photographer--with the backing of such greats as Tina Modotti Edward Weston Paul Strand and Henri Cartier-Bresson--Manuel Alvarez Bravo worked over a wide range of styles and subject matter--formalist abstraction architecture interiors landscapes still lifes and portraits--with a consistent focus on the landscape and social geography of Mexico. In his concise vision of his homeland it was both a real and symbolic landscape populated with subjects detained in dream world tableaux of desire solitude candor and foreboding. Eyes in His Eyes reintroduces some of the artist's overlooked masterpieces and reveals for the first time a broad selection of never-before-seen images from his private archives. In his 80-year career Alvarez Bravo printed published and exhibited only a thousand images. This portfolio culled with the help of the artist himself and completed after his death is full of unfamiliar abstractions portraits landscapes and street photography. It provides an invaluable re-entry into the visual poetry of one of Mexico's most gifted artists and a Modern master of photography. . 2007. 1933045604 . D. A. P/ Gallery hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 128 pp. 62 illus. 60 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; In March of 2009 amidst the rumblings of a global financial crisis that was to shape zeitgeist for years to come Jamey Stillings set out on a road trip to reinvigorate his creative spirit. What he encountered would captivate challenge and amaze him. Like a child suddenly finding himself before the world's largest erector set Jamey had discovered the Bridge at Hoover Dam. Instantly he knew he would dedicate himself to exploring and documenting construction of the bridge through its completion. Over the course of two years and set against the cultural and economic backdrop of our time Stillings created a body of work that echoes the Bridge in its ability to simultaneously celebrate the power of human spirit and ingenuity while inviting an examination of the intersection of nature and the hand of man. Against the temporal landscape of economic hardship an eerie historic echo of its neighboring Hoover Dam and the flashy and impermanent cultural landscape of Las Vegas the Colorado River Black Canyon and the Bridge that soars over are natural and manmade symbols of immutability and wonder. Together they are a legacy at which generations will marvel and Stillings images are imbued with the awe of one in the presence of great natural powers and the acme of human effort and creativity. Jamey Stillings' work has been widely exhibited and published throughout the country. The artist's first monograph The Bridge at Hoover Dam is beautifully produced in an oversized format and is published to coincide with a traveling exhibition which opened at the Phoenix Art Museum. . 2012. 1590053311 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 168 pp. -- with a bonus offer--; Originally published as a serial between 1844 and 1846 The Pencil of Nature was the first book to be illustrated entirely with photographs. Early enthusiast William Henry Fox Talbot hoped to spur public interest in photography—but was forced to cease publication after just six installments. In its time The Pencil of Nature was a commercial disaster. 150 years later Talbot’s Pencil is recognized as a major contribution to both the history of photography and the development of the book. Talbot not only invented the calotype process—the precursor to today’s film cameras—he transformed his everyday subjects into art. Architectural studies and local landscapes still-lifes close-ups and even a single painstakingly executed portrait—Talbot’s twenty-four prints remain strikingly modern and quietly beautiful. Reproduced from the original plates held in England’s National Media Museum each print is accompanied by the artist’s own careful description of its creation. An introduction gives further shape to Talbot’s life making The Pencil of Nature an essential volume for historians photographers and anyone interested in the development of this modern art. . 2011. 0981773664 . By 1933 when the Nazis forced the school to close Albers had become one of its best-known artists and teachers. Having migrated with his wife Anni to the U.S. where he taught at Black Mountain College and at Yale Albers began to experiment with the optical effects of simple color combinations. The experimentation blossomed into a lifelong obsession that would culminate in his best-known series of paintings Homage to the Square in which he painted several differently-colored squares within larger squares in order to illustrate his theory that alterations in environment shape and light would produce changes in color. This edition contains impeccable reproductions of Albers' famous series which beautifully illustrate the artist's primary thesis that the discrepancy between visual information received by the retina and what the mind perceives proves that this information is not intrinsic to color itself but is dependent on its relationship with its surroundings. . 2009. 8492480386 . 1969réf. 6567Somerville MA: Abyss Publications 1969. First Edition. Quarto 28cm; mimeographed sheets recto and verso side-stapled into pictorial card covers; ii1211pp. While not called for this copy has been signed by Bukowski on the title leaf. Subtle toning to margins of first and last leaves light wear and handling to wrappers with a few very faint splash marks to front cover which is pulling away slightly from the upper staple; contents clean complete; Very Good or better. Offered together with a set of unbound proof sheets for a later revised edition apparently unpublished of the same title - this one bearing an introduction not printed in earlier editions dated November 1988. Mild handling else Fine housed in a dark yellow clasp-bound envelope with "Fox / Proofs" written in pencil in an undetermined hand. Offered together with four pieces of correspondence between Fox Jeffrey Weinberg John Martin and Charles Bukowski regarding publication: 1. 2pp typed letter signed from Fox to Jeffrey Weinberg dated October 31 1985 on a sheet of Fox's pale grey laid paper stationary measuring 8.5" x 11". 61 lines signed "Hugh / Connie" in red pencil. Fox relays some information regarding the publication history of Charles Bukowski: A Critical and Bibliographical Study expressing his interest in Weinberg publishing a revised edition and soliciting his input on any changes he felt necessary. He also goes on at length quite candidly regarding long history as a transvestite his recent visit to "a sex-change doctor" in New York undergoing hormone therapy and the tension between "being MALE FATHER IRISH CATHOLIC TEACHING AT A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY and feeling FEMALE MOTHER PAGAN all my life.". Old horizontal folds from mailing some handling else well-preserved. 2. Typed letter signed from John Martin to Jeffrey Weinberg dated June 16 1989 on a single sheet of Black Sparrow Press stationary measuring 8.5" x 11". 26 lines signed "Sincerely John." Bukowski's friend and long-time publisher mentions discussing Weinberg's plan to publish a revised edition of Fox's Charles Bukowski: A Critical and Bibliographical Study sending him a copy of the book to gauge his thoughts. "Hank called to say that he had always disliked the book and didn't want it reprinted. I explained to him that we had no control over the narrative portions of the book but that we could withhold permission to quote from his poems." Old horizontal folds from mailing some handling one small spot of correction fluid and a faint diagonal crease. 3. Photocopied computer-generated TLS from Bukowski to John Martin dated 6-16-89 on white bond measuring 8.5" x 11". The text is brief confirming Bukowski's thoughts on republication of Fox's work: "I'd rather that the Hugh Fox work on my early books not be reprinted. I find the work both hasty and a bit dull. No good purpose could come of a reprint." Old horizontal folds from mailing with some mild handling. 4. Photocopied TLS from Fox to Jeffrey Weinberg printed on white bond measuring 8.5" x 11" dated June 25 1989 and signed in ink "Best Hugh". A brief but strongly-worded letter responding to both Martin's and Bukowski's sentiments regarding republication of his book. "Poets and other writers have no censorship control over what is written about them -- including reasonably short quotes from their works. Bukowski has no say over the reprint of this book. When I first sent it to him he was delighted by it. Whatever the old poet now on the brink of death thinks lashing out in anger at Time and Dissolution is totally irrelevant. My advice is -- GO AHEAD AND PUBLISH THE BOOK AND DON'T LET EMBITTERED LITTLE HITLERS DESTROY THE FIRST AMENDMENT." Old horizontal folds from mailing with some light handling. The first critical and bibliographical study of the works of Charles Bukowski predating Sanford Dorbin's A Bibliography of Charles Bukowski published by the Black Sparrow Press the same year. Fox 1932-2011 was an author and scholar who taught American literature at Loyola University in Los Angeles. In addition to critical studies of Bukowski and Lyn Lyfshin they wrote numerous volumes of poetry under the name Connie Fox and in 1968 founded Ghost Dance: The International Quarterly of Experimental Poetry which they edited for 27 years. The first edition of his critical work on Bukowski is uncommon in commerce and this is the first example we've seen signed by Bukowski himself. Abyss Publications unknown
