Circulating from the 12th-century and derived in part from Aesop Reynard the Fox is one of the most popular and enduring beast-epics. Reynard the Fox is a collection of fables that originated in medieval Europe and the exact authorship is unknown. The stories were likely passed down orally before being written down in various versions over the centuries. The fables with the wily fox as a central character lent themselves to satire and it became a vehicle used by the Protestant reformers and others. The Low-German version first appeared at Lubeck in 1498 and the Rostock editions which followed from 1517 facilitated the spread of the epic towards the east. The woodcuts had previously illustrated the 1539 Rostock edition of which 36 are attributed to Erhard Altdorfer. Stylistically they depend on the first Lubeck and Rostock editions. hardcover

Beige cloth boards with illustration in black on the front cover black lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers. Original torn publisher's belly band laid in at the interior front cover. This unique copy contains two inscriptions to former president of Israel Zalman Shazar 1889-1974 in pen on the title page. One at the top is a 75th birthday gift inscription in Hebrew from a unidentified friend of Shazar and below it is another warm inscription from artist Marc Chagall in Yiddish dated 1964. Chagall writes: "In honor of the president and my good friend Z. Shazar with love Marc Chagall Jerusalem 1964". It can be assumed that Shazar's friend gave him the book as a gift and Marc Chagall who was present at the time also inscribed it to him. This monograph showcases Marc Chagall's graphic work from the years 1922-1957 and includes a total of 148 images reproducing the artist's work. Most images are in b/w with six in color and can be divided roughly into five major stages of Chagall's career: etchings for his autobiography - illustrations for Gogol's "Dead Souls" 1923-27 - etchings for La Fontaine's "Fables" 1927-30 - illustrations for the Bible - his post-war lithographs. All images are finely printed mostly in high quality offset with a few b/w images being lithographic. Dust jacket with some minor to light rubbing and creasing to extremities. Binding with very minor age toning along the bottom edge of the front cover. A few light stains to the top edge of the book block. Interior clean throughout with book block tight overall. Dj in very good binding and interior in very good to near fine condition overall. Harry N. Abrams hardcover

réf. 77430Paris Boulet 1799. Oblong broadsheet over 48.5 x 60.5 cm. Colour etching finished by hand. Framed and glazed. Simple modern green wooden frame. = A fine lively powerful illustration of an angered tiger attacking a porcupine in vain - being deterred by the porcupine's sharp and painful spines. After an original drawing by the British artist James Northcote 1746-1831 whose illustrations of lions and tigers are among his most captivating. Northcote was a pupil of the great British portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-1792 first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. The French engraver Renard about whom little else is known he is not listed by Bénézit enhanced Northcote's original by a skilful use of shades. Published by the firm of Boulet rue Chabannais in Paris. Some spotting but hardly visible. A small defect in the upper margin otherwise very good. Very rare. We found no auction records. unknown
