1765réf. 50The third edition of Fox's Journal was "corrected" by a review of the earier editions but not much changed. It contains Wm. Penn's preface which is a standard exposition of the Quaker faith. The signature "John Loyd bought the year 1767": John Lloyd 1725-1797 was a prominent Quaker minister in the Philadelphia area Born in Pennsylvania his father Thomas was a Welsh Friend a physician who had come along with Penn and who was a key figure in the Quaker settlement. Lloyd himself established a farm in Montgomery County and committed himself to his meeting and Friend's affairs in his purview. On the matter of slavery John helped moved the Society to a purely abolitionist position. The Revolutionary War sorely affect membership in the Society as well. Pacifism and renunciation of human violence tried conscenes of many young Quakers who were sympathetic to the Revolution. Many Friends were disowned and although one might even go to Meeting it wasn't shunning it had family-wide implications for the community. Richardson and S. Clark hardcover
