ref. 66252London: John Murray 1894. 8vo. 19 x 12.5 cm. pp.xvi693. Publisher's original spruce green cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt brown-coated endpapers. Numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Provenance: Old ownership inscription Daniel A. Dewar dated 1896 to half-title. Final leaf with blind-stamp and crudely repaired tear endpapers a bit browned generally a very good copy. The Descent of Man was the first work to use the word 'evolution' preceding its use in the sixth edition of Origin of Species by a year and it expands upon the theories of selection and evolution proposed in Origin of Species. The word appears on several occasions in the text firstly on page 1: "Of the older and honoured chiefs in natural science many unfortunately are still opposed to evolution in every form". Prior to the Descent Darwin carefully neglected to draw out the implications of his theory when applied to human beings and hoped that one of his supporters such as Lyell or Huxley might tackle the thorny question of human evolution. When none did he set to work writing. Darwin laid out a clear family tree for humans tracing their affinity with primates and expounded his views on the evolutionary origins of morality and religion. By doing so the Descent "brought the full force of evolutionary proposals directly into the heart of ordinary Victorian life" ODNB and "caused a furore second only to that raised by the Origin" Norman. ref. 63391John Murray. London. 1888. Sixth Edition with Additions and Corrections to 1872. Thirty-Third Thousand. pp. xxi i 458 32 Catalogue dated July 1887. Folding chart. Dark green Murray cloth joints weak a little wear to the spine ends and to the top front edge contents clean and in very good order. FREEMAN #423 - This the Sixth edition is generally considered to be the final text though Darwin did make a number of minor changes in the 1876 edition. Freeman records that Chapter VII is entirely new and '. was inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart. The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type the volume shorter again and giving the general impression of a cheap edition which at 7s. 6d. it was. The title changes to The origin of species and a glossary compiled by W. S. Dallas appears. It is in this edition that the word 'evolution' occurs for the first time.' The Glossary in this the 33rd. thousand contains the misprint 'indigeens' for 'indigenes' and the opening sentence of the Historical Sketch reads - 'I will here a give a brief sketch.'. This latter misprint was not corrected until the issue of 1891. John Murray. London. 1888. Sixth Edition, with Additions and Corrections to 1872. (Thirty-Third Thousand.) hardcover

Originally the first part of Darwin's 'Geology of the Beagle' as Darwin's first monograph the author significantly revised 'Coral Reefs' in the second edition of 1874. This third edition was edited by T. G. Bonney to the extent of adding new footnotes and a significant appendix. Francis Darwin praised Bonney's efforts in the preface to this edition. The result is an improved version of Darwin's fullest statement on the formation of coral reefs drawn from observations not only on the Voyage of the Beagle but from around the world. 1890ref. B6800London: T. Nelson and Sons. 1890. Slight toning interior otherwise clean and crisp. Binding: Full original purple cloth boards. Upper with blind rules stamp and lettering title gilt-stamped in center. Publisher’s stamp in blind on lower. Spine with gilt lettering stamp and blind rules. Bevelled edges. Brown paste-in and free endpapers. Notes: A fine example of this journal written about Darwin’s five-year voyage on the Beagle from 1831 to 1836 the publication of which established him as both an eminent geologist and a popular author. “Darwin's journal encompasses every observable detail of the animals birds and plants he encountered on the five-year voyage. It includes minute descriptions and even sketches of the movements and habits of hitherto unfamiliar species. Accompanying the entries are his own conclusions analyses and classificatory notes that demonstrate his skill and talent as a naturalist.” With frontispiece protected by tissue guard and a profusion of other plates many double-page. Charles Robert Darwin 1809 – 1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist renown for his contributions to the understanding of evolutionary biology and he has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the present volume first published in 1839 as Journal and Remarks which quickly brought him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as Darwin's Journal of Researches and the revised second edition published in 1845 used this title. In 1890 the publisher John Murray issued a new illustrated edition of the Journal. Size: 8vo.202x136 mm Pages: Blank 2. Half title. Blank 2. Frontispiece. Title. Blank. Preface vii-x. Contents. "Prepared under the advice of Lyell and Hooker this was Darwin's greatest work and one of the most important books ever published. The evidence for the existence of evolution and that it resulted from the survival of the fittest by natural selection is marshaled and set out as never before.
