The fifth edition with additions and corrections of Charles Darwin's 1809-1882 seminal work. Considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology The Origin of Species introduces the theory of natural selection which states that species populations alter and diversify over generations - branching out from a shared common ancestor. 1871 proved a vexing year for Darwin as he received persistent criticism from zoologist St George Jackson Mivart who in his Genesis of Species 1871 accused Darwin among other allegations of being 'Dogmatic' in his assertions. In response Darwin who struggled to remain even- tempered in conversations with his rival gathered a selection of material to refute Mivart's claims; the revised sixth edition of the Origin of Species published the following year contained supporting research from Alexander Agassiz Abraham Dee Bartlett Albert Günther George Busk T. H. Huxley Osbert Salvin and William Henry. Freeman F390b. Fifth edition with additions and corrections. 8vo. Appleton and Company hardcover

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animalswas Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following On the Origin of Species 1859 and The Descent of Man 1871. In this work Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human emotional expression. To illustrate human emotion Darwin used photographs by five different photographers most notably Oscar Gustave Rejlander 18131875 who contributed 19 of the 30 photographs. The heliotype plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book.Freeman 1142. John Murray hardcover

Reissue; 8vo 19 x 12 cm; a little spotting to early and late leaves and very occasionally to contents; finely bound in tan calf spine gilt in compartments marbled endpapers and edges spine faded calf lightly rubbed very good condition; 208pp. A handsomely bound reissue of Darwin's first work on plant movement originally published in 1875. 'Darwin was also intrigued by the more energetic aspects of plant physiology. While ill in 1863 he studied the circular movements of pea tendrils as they searched for an object to twine around. He went on to examine over 100 species of climbers publishing the results in 1865 as a Linnean Society monograph and in 1875 under the same title The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants. In the wild he surmised the climbing adaptation aided survival in dense vegetation. Assisted by his son Francis he widened the research to survey the movements of stems leaves and roots under the influence of gravity moisture and light. Although Darwin's achievement in botany was long underestimated his chief aim was to show the power of evolutionary theory for understanding plant morphology and physiology. Many people who might have shied away from ape-ancestry were prepared to accept natural selection and evolution among plants' Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. A HANDSOME COPY FRESH AND FINE AND UNUSUALLY SO FOR ANY 19TH CENTURY PRINTING OF DARWIN. This is an important volume of Darwin's evolutionary writings and was written in part at least as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment. It was more importantly along with his 1871 book ‘The Descent of Man’ part of Darwin's attempt to address questions of human origins and human psychology using his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin noted the universal nature of facial expressions in the book: ".the young and the old of widely different races both with man and animals express the same state of mind by the same movements. EARLY PRINTING IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION. One of Darwin's most important but often overlooked works. The LIFE AND LETTERS of Darwin III p. 274 quotes Asa Gray as saying that "if the Orchid-book with a few trifling omissions had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians" and noted that a review in the 'Literary Churchman' found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying 'O Lord how manifold are Thy works.'" The book was concerned with working out in detail the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilize them their evolution being attributed to natural selection and therefore was the first of the volumes of "supporting evidence" for his ORIGIN OF SPECIES. Although it was praised highly by botanists it did not sell well only about 6000 copies by the turn of the century. John Murray hardcover
