1871réf. QQ0569John Murray 1871. First edition second issue with 'When' rather than 'transmitted' as the first word on p. 297 of vol. I without the printer's note and errata on the verso of the title page in vol. II and without the tipped-in 'postscript' after p. viii in vol. II. Vol. II title page verso has advertisements for 9 other works by Darwin. With 16pp. of publisher's advertisements to rear of both vols as in first issue. Distinguished from the two later 1871 issues by the lack of 'seventh thousand' or 'eighth thousand' on title page there are also small textual differences. Original publisher's full green cloth gilt lettering to spines blindstamped frames to boards. Very mild rubbing to boards; single faint mark / slight indentation to each spine; a couple of minor marks to rear board of vol. I. Mild wear to board and spine edges and board corners; corners slightly pushed in. Hinges sound. Slight foxing to page edges. Original black endpapers just starting at gutter in vol. I and front of vol. II. Mild foxing especially to early and late pages. Half titles. Vol. I 'U' gathering pp. 289-304 has bottom cord broken so is slightly loose at base of gutter. Minor production error to p. 195 of vol. II: bottom corner of page folded in and thus incorrectly trimmed. Numerous in-text b/w wood engraved illus. The first issue of this first edition of 2500 copies was published on 24 February 1871 followed by this second issue of 2000 copies in March. The Descent of Man was the first of Darwin's works to include the word 'evolution' preceding its use in the 1872 sixth edition of The Origin of Species previous editions of the Origin had used 'descent with modification'. 'The Descent understood by Darwin as a sequel to the Origin was written with a maturity and depth of learning that marked Darwin's status as an elite gentleman of science'; while it perhaps 'caused less of an outcry' than the earlier work it 'brought the full force of evolutionary proposals directly into the heart of ordinary Victorian life' ODNB. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was an immediate best-seller when it was first published in 1872 and still provides the point of departure for research into emotion and facial expression. In his study of infants and children including a delightfully objective study of his own baby's smiles and pouts of the insane of painting and sculpture of cats and dogs and monkeys and of the ways that people in different cultures express their feelings Darwin's insights have not been improved upon by modern science. This definitive edition contains a substantial new Introduction and Afterword by Paul Ekman. Ekman also provides commentaries that use the latest scientific knowledge to elaborate support and occasionally challenge Darwin's insights. -- with a bonus offer--; 520-DarCH; Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals EMOTIONS PSYCHOLOGY COMPARATIVE INSTINCT Why do we bite people we feel affection towards Why do dogs wag their tails Or cats purr Why do we get embarrassed and why does embarrassment make us blush These and . 1965. 0226136566 . He examines his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle and subsequent preparation of a manuscript for his pivotal work ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859. Also included are many of Darwin's important letters edited by his son Francis. They reveal the freethinking geobiologist's thoughts on religious beliefs scientific research and the bitter controversy surrounding the far-reaching ramifications of evolutionary theory for life on Earth including our own species. The reissue of this volume is a major contribution to the history and philosophy of evolutionary thought. -- with a bonus offer--; 520-Darwc; Darwin Charles; Darwin Francis The Autobiography Of Charles Darwin DARWIN CHARLES 1809 1882 BIOGRAPHY In his AUTOBIOGRAPHY written in 1876 but published posthumously the great naturalist Charles Darwin reflects on those crucial events that resulted in . 2000. 1573928348 . Sachs observes that the botanical studies are "even more overwhelming" than the author's magnum opus The Origin of Species in its presentation of natural seledtion as the basic fact of evolution. Sachs singles out this work The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species as particularly significant in that it explores the theme of co-evolution between two or more interdependent species such as elongated flowers developing together with insects capable of pollinating them with a long proboscus.
