Upper designed in blind with foliage decoration and rules. Flat spine with similar design in gilt gilt lettering. Colour-illustrated pasted and free endpapers. Top edges green. No dust jacket. Notes: Charles Robert Darwin 1809 – 1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist renown for his contributions to the understanding of evolutionary biology. He has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. On the Origin of Species which discusses Darwin’s theory of natural selection is arguably his most famed work. Size: 8vo. 170 x 110 mm Category: Book Science & Technology; Ward, Lock & Co. hardcover

1880réf. 42425London Harrison and Sons 1880. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1879 Vol. 170 - Part II. Pp. 447-538 and. 1 plate. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper announcing Darwin's so-called "Resonance Theory" of the origin of the moon according to which the moon might have originated from the fission of a parent earth as the result of an instability produced by resonant solar tides."Darwin's most significant contribution to the history of science lies in his pioneering work in the application of detailled dynamical analysis to cosmological and geological problems. That many of his conclusions are now out of date should in no way diminish the historical interest in his experiments nor the importent service thet he rendered cosmogony by the example he gave of putting various hypotheses to the test of actual calculations. Darwin's method remains a milestone in the development of cosmogony and subsequent investigators have favored it over the merely qualitative arguments prevalent until that time."DSB. unknown

Milano, G. Daelli e Comp.
57847Printed for R. Baldwin. London. 1786. The Tenth Edition. . pp. 384 xiv Index ii Advertisement. Engraved portrait frontispiece dated 1782 the year after she died one folding plate of stove-fires. Original sheep now worn along spine at corners and lower board edge the first half of gathering 'E' misbound one leaf with a couple of edge tears without loss LACKING the two plates at the end of the text showing Plans of a Grand Table of Two Covers with the facsimile printed signature of Mrs. Raffald on page 1 and the real signature of ANN DARWIN Oct 4th 1796 at the head of the title. Possibly ANN DARWIN 1727-1813 the fourth child of Robert Darwin and Charles Darwin's great-aunt. The signature does not really match that given by FREEMAN in Darwin Pedigrees 1984 but given the differences in age when each of them was written perhaps there is a link. It otherwise remains tantalisingly enigmatic. Printed for R. Baldwin. London. 1786. The Tenth Edition. unknown
