1971réf. 2240121Luray VA: Shenandoah Natural History Association Inc. Bulletin No. 4 1971. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG/Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. Also included with the book is a photograph which is a slight variation of the one owned by the National Park Service. Along with a note written by "Eddie R." claiming "This picture was taken at Rapidan VA on Sunday afternoon June 3 1930 while being a guest of Lou Henry and Herbert Hoover.". This issue with this note is that June 3 1930 actually fell on a Tuesday and the photo is also shown on page 101 of the book although there is no date listed under the photo. There's also an old Christmas card that was with this paperwork signed by Irma and Juan Savary. It is not clear how this plays in with the photo and Eddie's claim of being a guest but all of these pieces of ephemera were together inside the book so they will continue on to the next owner. Dust jacket shows scuffing and fading along with toning and small tears along the edges. Brown boards underneath are clean with no notable issues. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. There are no signatures or bookplates no library markings no handwriting no pages are torn or loose. Although the dust jacket looks worn and sunned the book itself does not appear to have been read much if any. Shenandoah Natural History Association, Inc. (Bulletin No. 4) hardcover
1895réf. 2240124New York: D. Appleton and Company 1895. Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover brick red cloth boards with black design on front. Exterior shows spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The rear board and a portion of the front board also show light spots near the bottom outside edge likely from moisture which is limited only to the exterior of the book. The interior binding is good at the hinge is but some of the quadrants of pages particularly around volume 1 page 235 are a bit offset and stick out from the exterior fore edge. All the pages are secure it's just that this part has some pulling. This addition advertises "two volumes in one" with additions and corrections from the sixth and last English edition. Volume 1 in this book contains 365 pages the second half of the book is volume 2 which contains 322 plus the index. The front end page and opposite pastedown both contain the original owners names and info the pastedown portion is written in pencil. No other handwriting found in the book no bookplates no library markings. There is also a small tear on the rear pastedown in the upper left corner. This may have been caused when the book was originally bound as it is all securely glued place. The rear board also has an indentation along the top edge most of which has been straightened out but there is still a small soft area. D. Appleton and Company hardcover

1901réf. 52738London: Jarrold & Sons 1901. First printing. Near fine. First edition advance review copy of this scarce turn-of-the-century primer on Darwinism for "every day people." A popular introduction to evolution by means of natural selection for "the young person the person with little education the person who is not studious the masses in short." Influenced by renowned naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace with whom he became acquainted due to their mutual work in land nationalization projects Ogilvy turned his attention to the still widely misunderstood concept of evolution. Wallace who had already provided the introduction for Ogilvy's THE THIRD FACTOR OF PRODUCTION also reviewed the manuscript for this book. Certainly with his connection to Darwin as "a co-discoverer and friend" he was one of the best possible beta readers for such a text. Ogilvy stresses that this book was written to make the principles of Darwinism accessible to all by making the subject "simple clear and interesting" and avoiding "technicalities and dry structural details" - addressing what he felt was a general misunderstanding of Darwin's findings amongst the population he sought to reach. A contemporary review in the science journal NATURE confirms this referring to a "widespread . ignorance and misapprehension of Darwin's teaching among the general public." Another from THE EXPOSITORY TIMES praises the "blessed simplicity in Mr. Ogilvy's way of presenting the subject." Laid into this copy is a typed letter signed by the publisher sending it to a journal editor for review. OCLC locates only a handful of US holdings and only a few more elsewhere. A gorgeous copy. 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original green cloth with dark green stamped Art-Nouveau design lettered in red to front board and in gilt to spine. Pictorial endpapers. 160 pages. Single typed sheet dated 21 March 1901 and signed "Jarrold Sons" laid in. Boards with touch of wear to extremities. Faint offsetting to endpapers light foxing to edges. Crisp and tight.
