1859réf. 184317London: John Murray 1859. Ushering in a new era of thought about the nature of man First edition of "the most influential scientific work of the 19th century" Horblit and "certainly the most important biological book ever written" Freeman. The initial 1250 copies of Darwin's magnum opus prompted an intellectual revolution comparable to that of Newton or Copernicus. While recognizable theories of evolution had been developing since at least the mid-1750s the Origin introduces the critical mechanism of natural selection to explain the direction of the process. When married with Mendelian genetics natural selection became the foundation of modern evolutionary theory: "every modern discussion of man's future the population explosion the struggle for existence the purpose of man and the universe and man's place in nature rests on Darwin" Mayr pp. vii-xxviii. Octavo 187 x 114 mm. Folding diagram lithographed by W. West. Bound with half-title and without publisher's advertisements as often. Near-contemporary green half calf spine and covers decorated in gilt spine with dark red calf label marbled sides endpapers and edges. Housed in custom green half morocco cloth box. Ornithological bookplate of the zoologist Brunsdon Yapp 1909-1990 author of a study of bird illustrations in medieval texts. Infrequent 20th-century pencil annotations to margins. 2005réf. 140401Philadelphia: Running Press 2005. First edition of this compilation of Charles Darwin's most influential works in their entirety contained for the first time in one volume. Thick Octavo original boards. Presentation copy warmly inscribed by James Watson to his friends on the half-title page "For Peter and Dori from Jim." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Text includes commentary by Nobel laureate James Watson. Included in this volume are four of the most influential works of Charles Darwin reprinted in their entirety each with commentary from Nobel Prize-winning scientist James D. Watson. Included are On the Origin of Species arguably the most important scientific work of the nineteenth century; Voyage of the Beagle a captivating travelogue richly stocked with observations that helped guide the young Darwin through his evolutionary world view; The Descent of Man which explored the origins of humans and their history; and The Expressions of Emotions in Man and Animals which explored the origin and nature of the mind. With his separate introductions for each of Darwin's books he goes further to explain how the modern considerations underlying genome research would have been impossible without Darwin bringing a contemporary relevance to these nineteenth century masterworks. 1865réf. 185092St Petersburg: Prince A. S. Golitsyn 1865. Russian evolution Scarce first edition in Russian of Darwin's first published book celebrated as the genesis of his theory of evolutionary biology. Among the earliest translations of the Voyage in any language this edition attests to Darwin's popularity in Tsarist Russia. Like Britain and France Russia was a centre of pre-Darwinian research on evolutionary theory. The Darwinian evolution proved immediately popular as young scientists and radical social philosophers employed it to establish their independence from religious conservatives in the traumatic aftermath of the Crimean War. The Voyage of the Beagle was originally published in 1839. This translation was produced by Andrei Beketov 1825-1902 the botanist and evolutionary theorist who had also produced the first Russian translation of the Origin in 1864. Beketov's wife Elisaveta 1834-1902 was a prolific translator in her own right and it is now widely accepted that she collaborated with her husband on this translation. A variant of the famed diagram of the Galapagos finches is on page 206 of Volume II. 2 vols small octavo 160 x 106 mm pp. viii 540 2; iv vi 466. Engraved portrait frontispiece to vol. Later blue ink library marks to final leaf verso of vol. II. Japanese tissue repair to upper inner corner of frontispiece. Light rubbing minor foxing and damp staining to contents: a very good copy. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animalswas Darwin's third major work of evolutionary theory following On the Origin of Species 1859 and The Descent of Man 1871. In this work Darwin explores the biological aspects of emotional behaviour and the animal origins of human emotional expression. To illustrate human emotion Darwin used photographs by five different photographers most notably Oscar Gustave Rejlander 18131875 who contributed 19 of the 30 photographs. The heliotype plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a scientific book.Freeman 1142. John Murray hardcover

1878réf. 178890London: Samson Low Marston Searle and Rivington 1878. Capturing the evolution of Darwin A prime example of Darwin's personal iconography as an elder statesman of science. This photograph is taken from Lock & Whitfield's Men of Mark series - a portrait gallery of prominent Victorian individuals - and refashioned for open display. By 1878 the 69-year-old's fame was widespread. Despite his increasing retirement at Down House many continued to seek him out including Gladstone in 1877. As his son Francis recalled "He did not realise that people would know him from his photograph and I remember him at the Crystal Palace aquarium saying in uneasy voice that somebody had been looking at him & he supposed he must have been recognized" Van Whye. Men of Mark was issued in monthly parts comprising three portrait plates and biographical notices for 1s 6d. Darwin appeared in part 36 in December 1878. This image was later used as the frontispiece to the third edition in French of the Descent of Man. Photographic portrait 114 x 92 mm after a Woodburytype original by Lock & Whitfield mounted within contemporary wood frame with glazing and metal oval border 210 x 132 mm. Minimal finger-soiling slight scuffing to frame: in very good condition. Van Whye The Complete Photographs of Darwin 1878a.1. unknown

1860réf. 179998London: John Murray 1860. With a gift inscription by the inventor of the fuel cell Second edition revised to include the author's response to criticisms of the first edition published the year before. This copy is inscribed on the title page by William Robert Grove the physicist and proponent of natural selection "Imogen from her loving Father WRG" and is intelligently annotated throughout. Grove 1811-1896 was the inventor of the first fuel cell a pioneer of energy conservation and the first person to demonstrate that molecules thermally dissociated into atoms. In his 1866 inaugural address he became the first president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science to publicly announce his support for the theory of evolution although "Darwin was displeased that the address did not discuss what was specific to his theory. In a letter that has not been found he voiced his criticisms to Grove who replied that he had wanted the address to be accessible to non-specialists" Darwin Correspondence Project. Grove instilled an interest in science in his family presenting this copy to his daughter Imogen Emily 1848-1886 and nurturing the interests of his grandson the astronomer Edmond Herbert Grove-Hills 1864-1922. This copy additionally has the partially erased ownership signature of a member of the Grove family presumably Imogen on the half-title. The Origin of Species is "the most important biological book ever written" Freeman. The changes to the second edition include the correction of the misprint "speceies" and the dilution of the "whale-bear" story which speculates that a bear scooping insects from the water may evolve into a whale-like creature. This hypothesis was seen as absurd and was seized upon by Darwin's critics to ridicule both the scientist and his evolutionary theory; Charles Lyell advised him to remove it entirely. "This story is not found again in any printing except in the American editions of 1860 until the end of copyright" Freeman p. 78. All copies of the second edition save for a handful dated 1859 are marked "fifth thousand" on the title page; the edition is not otherwise indicated as the second. This second issue the form in which the second edition is almost always seen was published on 7 January 1860 in a print run of 3000 copies. Octavo in 12s. Folding diagram facing p. 117. With 32 pp. of publisher's advertisements dated January 1860 at rear. Original green diagonal-wave-grain cloth spine lettered ruled and decorated in gilt covers blocked in blind Freeman's variant a light brown coated endpapers binder's ticket of Edmonds & Remnants on rear pastedown. With the ownership signature dated 1895 of Ada Mary Charles Montagu Douglas Scott 1855-1943 on title page. Cloth bright and clean spine slanted extremities and inner hinges reinforced damp stains to endpapers: a very good copy indeed. Freeman 376.
