First edition first issue published by John Murray in 1868. 2 Volumes first issue printings with 5 point errata in 6 lines to volume i and 9 points in 7 lines to volume ii. A slightly larger format than many of the Murray editions demy octavo measuring approx 22.5x15cm. Volume i viii411132 pp ads dated April 1867. Volume ii viii4862 pp ads dated February 1868. Original smooth green cloth covers are fresh and bright some light bumping to the corners vol i has some minor indentations to the spine and the upper cover is very slightly bowed vol ii has a slight lean or spine slant. Both with bright gilt to the spines top edges a little dusty securely bound black endpapers with bookseller label first and last few pages with some spotting pages otherwise bright and mostly clean an occasional very minor mark volume i has a previous owners gift inscription in ink to the first blank page very good condition. Numerous black and white illustrations. Only 1500 copies were printed for the first issue of this important work by Darwin. Also comes with two newspaper articles of the Pall Mall Gazette dated 10th and 15th Feb 1868 with the header Darwin on Domestication and Variation. These are spotted. John Murray hardcover

Front pastedown has a previous owners bookplate Frederick E B Loraine. The free endpaper has a pencil gift inscription which blends in with the dark colour. Prelims spotted pages with a slightly dusty feel and some occasional very tiny spots and small marks. There are also a number of pages with creased or indented corners and wear from reading pages rough cut. Good condition. vi 374 pages 32 pages of recent works by the publisher dated November 1872. Green cloth covers with some pushing to spine ends and a few very minor marks to the covers. Top edge darkened endpapers a little tanned and faded title page has a couple of ink spots which also affect the opposing page. Pages generally clear with an occasional very minor spot creeping in from the edges pages slightly wavy. No ownership inscriptions there are a handful of rubbed out pencil lines in the margins. This was originally published ten years earlier in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London. Dark green covers are generally clean with some wear to the spine ends and corners with a few small areas of bubbling and a couple of tiny marks. Top edge a little darkened front free endpaper is detached front hinge cracked and a little loose feeling but the rest of the page block is securely bound. The next page is the half title page unsure whether there is supposed to be a blank page before that. Half title has a previous owners name. Pages a little age toned there are some pages with slightly creased corners from having been read plus a few pages with a spot or small mark. The rear free endpaper is starting to come loose and the rear board also has a slightly loose feel. The pages are slightly indented to the bottom inside corner at the spine possibly has been dropped at some point. Good condition. viii 208 pages 32 pages of publishers works at the back dated January 1875. John Murray hardcover

The sixth edition contains various additions and corrections and was the first to use the word evolution though he first used the term a year earlier in The Descent of Man. The first printing of the sixth edition is the eleventh thousand printed the same year as this. Green cloth covers with patchy fading or mottling spine ends rubbed and chipped corners rubbed secure binding endpapers bright and without any inscriptions the rear endpaper has a small tear and signs of glue to the hinge presumably a historical repair which is neat and secure. Half title spotted pages a little age toned with a few rare spots. Complete with pull out chart. Good condition. 19x13cm xxi 458 pages. John Murray hardcover
