1896réf. 5553First edition of the significant Russian translation of 'On the Origin of Species' by Kliment Timiryazev. The first Russian translation of Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species' was completed in 1864 based on the American edition of 1860 and heavily influenced by the first German translation 1860. A second translation appeared in 1896 offered in two versions—one by journalist historian and mathematician Mikhail Filipov and the other by the renowned Russian botanist and physiologist Kliment Timiryazev 1843-1920 a prominent advocate for Darwin's theories in Russia. Both translations were based on Darwin's final 6th edition 1876. This first volume of the four-volume series 'The Works' by Darwin features Timiryazev's first translation. As a young student at the University of St. Petersburg in 1860 Timiryazev first encountered Darwin's theory of the origin of species. After graduating he traveled to Heidelberg for further study and research where he spent much of his time with Vladimir Kovalevsky a passionate Russian Darwinist. In 1877 Timiryazev after some difficulty managed to arrange a meeting with Charles Darwin at Down House. Upon returning to Russia Timiryazev devoted himself to defending and promoting Darwin's theories. His translations of Darwin's works are considered the highest quality both in translation accuracy and scientific editing. 1880réf. 258181880 DARWIN Origin of Species Evolution Survival of Fittest Biology Science "One general law leading to the advancement of all organic beings namely multiply vary let the strongest live and the weakest die." ― Charles Darwin The Origin of Species "Origin of Species" originally written in 1859 helped lay the foundation for many of the theories of evolution that would shape thinking for the next century. According to Glick "'Origin of Species' greatest impact on German biological practice lay in the introduction of historical modes of explanation for the observable phenomena of living nature. The historical approach to nature was rejected not only by the opponents of evolution but also by the idealist evolutionist. Whether they favored a teleological or a reductionist biology the idealists could not see the point of a theory that emphasized the irregularities and exceptions in the organic world. In the timeless real of idealist thinking unchanging laws worked out an inevitable destiny. But Darwin taught his followers to look at living beings one by one. Thus prompted they recognized as if for the first time the surprising fact of anomaly and the wisdom of an open-ended theory." Glick Comparative Reception of Darwinism Garrison calls this work "the most wonderful piece of synthesis in the history of science."
