Twenty years ago, Granville Island was transformed from a decrepit 37 acre industrial slum in Vancouver's False Creek to possibly the most successful urban redevelopment ever seen in North America. Rusty tin-sided factories were reborn as a public market, an art school, shops, restaurants, theatres, and a great deal more. Today, Granville Island boasts more than eight million visits a year, 2,600 jobs and the highest sales per square foot of any public market on this continent. A chronicle of the Granville Island story which celebrates what the Island has to offer, and peers inside its seldom-seen inner life. An attractive, interesting and enjoyable volume. In 1945, the Headmaster-Designate of an Approved School suggested to the Trustees that it would be of much practical value to have an intensive study of a group of delinquents made by one who could be granted the necessary facilities by residence for a period in a School and by virtual adoption on to its staff. They were fortunate in securing the services of the author for the purpose. Mr. Stott, for four years, enjoyed the active co-operation of the Warden and the members of the permanent staff of a School whose identity it is not, for obvious reasons, possible to disclose.
