réf. 52675Pamphlet. 8vo. Stiff tan printed wrappers housing blank lined sheets. Very good. Minor wear to outer wrappers with text leaves lightly age toned else tight and nice. Blank store-bought note pad bearing huge printed "I / AM / IT" on front wrapper and rear wrapper with "Multiplication Table" and columns of fine print weights/measures data with the first 22 pages bearing 10 student council reports all penned in brown ink in the large neat hand of student council secretary Junior Watson. These homespun minutes begin with their first meeting recording election of officers before moving on to issues "Affair about the members of the student council taking places of teachers in the halls at passing of classes" "the boys to tell them about their conduct in the halls" "The matter of passing up and down stairs. All boys who have their lockers in the basement to observe regular rules in passing down to them but when leaving the building to use the north door". Of more interest is "The matter of the girls having the gym two days out of every week. If the girls do not turn out and go down to the gym more regularly the gym will be taken away from them." A bit later they explore "whether the girls might use the same number of basketballs that the boys use on their gym days" followed by a report "that the girls might have the same number of basketballs as the boys have. the girls have already got two school basketballs to use at noon. The sic are three other school basketballs which have disappeared and they are trying to locate." Others hope that "the windows in the gym might be opened at noon and during gym class because the air is bad." The issue of students rather than teachers monitoring halls for passes crops up occasionally clearly a popular notion. These ten reports are followed by circa 50-60 blank pages and at the close two pages list "The Roll Call" of student council member names and faculty advisors alongside a schedule of these once-a-week meetings from March through June -- June clearly being aspirational as April 6 records the final meeting. Laid in at rear are two 8" X 11" pages from the trade journal "The Mississippi Valley Lumberman" -- perhaps kept by Junior Watson since both of these pages "The Onlooker's Page" include anecdotes from one Dick Watson. Perhaps it's this same Watson who tipped to the inside front wrapper a 4¼" X 7" sheet of "Great Northern Railway" stationery bearing an amusing juvenile colored pencil drawing of a colorful saddled horse stating "Huh Huh Huh"! There are Washington High Schools in Cedar Rapids Iowa Milwaukee Wisconsin and Kansas City Kansas -- and no doubt others -- making determination of the precise origin of this notebook challenging but with the "Roll Call" of thirteen student full names and three faculty last names it seems feasible and warrants further research. A rare survivor and amusing bit of education and Americana ephemera in any case. unknown
