The dropped shoulders wide sleeves and the large flat collar pelerine are hallmarks of the 1840s and early '50s style in America and abroad. 1750rif. 25101750. Good. Graphite ink and wash on cream laid paper with an extensive yet partial and illegible series of alphabetic watermarks. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 185 x 115 mm the full sheet. With an contemporary support adhered to the top sheet edge. 19th century text in graphite added to the shield held by the putti. The image has been cropped to exclude the top portion of a recumbent figure whose legs are covered by a shroud and whose left hand remains visible in the left-center image area propped upon an pillow holding a heart. While this drawing appears to have been completed in the mid-18th century given the Neoclassical style media and paper the text "Kind Hearts and Coronets" comes from the poem Lady Clara Vere de Vere by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The poem was pubished in 1842 indicating that the pencil inscription in the image was added later. unknown

Adhered to a 19th century laid paper matrix at the corners. On the verso is a similar decorative design in brown ink. This work is a classic example of an "apparato" design. In the 16th and 17th centuries artists were frequently commissioned to design ephemeral architecture and "festival machines" for royal entries weddings or religious processions. These festival machines were often made of temporary materials like wood plaster and gilded papier-mâché to be used once during a city-wide celebration and then dismantled. This image may also be a pattern sheet for an engraver. unknown
