8vo. 2 pages. To his translator Heinrich Zeise, with whom he corresponded frequently. While most of their correspondence has been published, this letter was previously unknown. Apart from matters regarding translations, Andersen writes that he sends greetings from his close friend, the Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Oersted, and, in a postscript, that he is staying at the Hotel du Nord on Kongens Nytorv. - Slight defect to upper right corner.

Andersen states that it has been a "peculiar pleasure" to make his correspondent's acquaintance, remarking "There are men to whom we feel drawn at once at the first meetings, and who become dear to us, and you are such a man. It is wonderful to me to think of, that we will probably never meet again, for I don't think I will ever come to America, although I am certainly not wanting in the desire". The author further adds that he promised Christensen's wife a small bouquet, "but the flowers must be fresh; it is the colour grouping that has an effect, if the flowers are dried the effect is mostly gone. I must therefore choose such colours that will keep best, but the appearance at best is not promising; yet it is flowers and greens from Danish soil, and my cordial greeting, and remembrance of the land of your birth, you must take as an evidence of my sincere good will" and also writes "You will soon depart for the great land beyond the ocean, bring my friends, old and young, my heartfelt love, and if you meet Mr. Marcus Spring and his wife Rebecca, remember me to them [...] Remember me also to the publishers of the Riverside Magazine and my dear friend there, Mr. Horace C. Scudder [...]". - Accompanied by a contemporary English translation in the hand of Christensen and also including an A.L.S. by Christensen, two pages, 8vo, Copenhagen, 7th April 1903, to Miss. M. D. Holliday in Brooklyn, New York, in English. Christensen states that he is anxious to meet his correspondent's wishes, as a proof of his friendship, and sends her "a letter which I received [from] Hans Christian Andersen more than 32 years ago, on my first visit to my native city after 20 years absence", further commenting "It is a valuable memento indeed - the signatures of the roy[al?] persons are very difficult, almost impossible to obtain [...] But Andersen's letter is worth them all!" - Marcus Spring (1810-1874) American Cotton Merchant, creator of the Raritan Bay Union, a utopian community in New Jersey. Husband of Rebecca Buffum (1812-1911) from 1836. - Horace Scudder (1838-1902) American Man of Letters and Editor, best known for his children's books. - All three letters are slightly worn to the edges, evidently a result of them having been removed from an album, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signatures.

With a fine inscription to the daughter of his benefactor and friend, the great Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted: "Kaere Froeken Mathilde Ørsted! Forrige Fredag skulde alle-rede 'Lykke Peer' have bragt Hislen og Lykoenskning, nu kommer han een Uge for seent, men han faaer vel nok Lov til at blive i Stuen? Erboedigst H. C. Andersen En 11 November 1870" ("Dear Miss Mathilde Oersted! 'Lucky Peer' should have presented his greetings and congratulations last Friday; now he arrives with a week's delay, but surely he still will permitted to stay in the your sitting room? Yours very sincerely, H. C. Andersen, November 11, 1870"). Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851), famous as the discoverer of electromagnetism, was one of the few notable men of Danish society who advanced H. C. First edition. - First collection in Andersen's second series of "New Fairy Tales", containing the tales "The Old Street Lamp", "The Neighbouring Families", "The Darning Needle", and "Little Tuk", as well as the famous, bleak tale of "The Shadow". With a long and thoughtful autograph inscription in verse to William Oehlenschläger, the son of his friend and benefactor Adam Oehlenschläger, written on the back of the upper wrapper: "Min inderlig kjaere Ven / William Oehlenschlaeger. / Her er’mine Børn, de yngste fem, / Jeg taenke hos Dig de finde et Hjem. / De komme i Digter Kongens Slot, / Dig søge de der og saa faae de det godt / H. C. Andersen / Paaskemorgen" ("My very dearest friend William Oehlenschlaeger. Here are my youngest five children: I believe they shall find a home with you. They enter the Poet King's castle, where they shall seek you out and find their happiness. H. C. Andersen, on Easter morning"). - It was Andersen's wont to send copies of his fairy tales to his friends' and relatives' children. The poet and romantic playwright Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger (1779-1850), revered by Heine, was the author of the Danish national anthem. Oehlenschläger had met the 17-year-old Andersen in 1822 and supported the struggling young man from the beginning; Andersen's early writings are informed by a desire to imitate the work of his much-admired mentor. - Binding repaired, preserving the inscribed upper cover only, remargined and reinforced in places. Paper somewhat browned throughout, as common. Provenance: 1) William Oehlenschlaeger; 2) Bent W. This historian and Chicago Museum of Science and Industry curator was named director of Cleveland's renowned Western Reserve Historical Society in 1946 one of the most reknowned of its kind in the country until its recent fall from grace. ALS 2pp 8�" X 11" Cleveland OH n.y. 1947 July 2. Addressed to Mary B. Day librarian of the Museum of Science and Industry. Fine. On Western Reserve Historical Society letterhead a mimeographed form letter dated June 26 1947 and headlined "Microfilming of the Scioto Gazette 1800 -- 1866" announces this early microfilming project and solicits the loan of missing issues for this effort. This ALS begins at the bottom of this printed letter and fills the reverse. The newly-appointed director jokes with his former colleague "I don't expect you to have a Scioto Gazette in your handbag but I thot sic that you might like to know of one of my activities in my new post. This is my first venture into microfilming of a whole newspaper file -- it seems to be coming along fine." He goes a nice summary of his new digs: "This is really quite a place. We have a very good hist. museum and a good hist. library housed in two Florentine style 'Gold Coast' residences each with 70 rooms large and small. We have about 200000 books 200000 pamphlets 20000 volumes of newspapers and over 1000 rolls of microfilm of newspapers about 1000000 manuscripts a good map collection the sixth best genealogical library just back of Newberry I understand the third best stamp library a lot of good pictures the best Shaker Society collection anywhere a good costume collection i.e. books and plates and some real costumes a collection of about 3000 Lincoln items a lot of Civil War materials inc. a good deal of Confederate manuscripts pamphlets books etc. I could go on but you see what I have to play with and can imagine what a good time I am having. We have some autographs and expect to receive I hope I hope a collection of Signers of the Dec. of Independence -- owned by on of our trustees. Yes B. Gwinnet is there!" Issued on 9 April 1947 this informal half-length shot depicts Commerce Secretary Averill Harriman the chairman of the Economic Advisory Council and Agriculture Secretary Anderson chatting and smiling as they leave the White House. The original mimeographed caption sheet usually absent for printed on cheap newsprint is still present and in superb condition and captions this image: "Special Cabinet Meeting Weighs Rise in Prices" elaborating "President Truman met in a special meeting with his cabinet today and heard a full-dress discussion of the nation's economy but no immediate government action to halt the rise of high prices was decided upon." Signed Commemorative Postal Cover
American career balloonist with many "firsts" to his name; in 1978 he Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman piloted the Double Eagle II in the first Transatlantic balloon crossing departing Maine on August 11 and landing in France six days later -- for which they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979. Signed commemorative postal cover honoring this achievement 6�" X 3�" cancelled in Albuquerque New Mexico on April 20 1979. Envelope bears the 13-cent "French Alliance 1778" stamp and 4-cent "A Public That Reads" stamp and a special postal cancellation featuring an image of the Double Eagle balloon and the caption "Double Eagle II / First Transatlantic Balloon Flight." No decorative printed cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Anderson signs boldly in black fineline near the center. Also present is a small portion of the original mailing envelope used to transmit this cover cancelled in Albuquerque July 18 1979. An Albuquerque philatelic connection is relevant for the Double Eagle II crew were among those who established this town as the ballooning capital of the world. Anderson died in a balloon crash in Germany making his a rather scarce signature. unknown

Minnesota's 28th governor 1952-55 had already served a record-setting 11 years as lieutenant governor starting at the record-setting age of 26! Signed First Day Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled at Fort Snelling Minnesota on October 17 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" noted. Near fine. Single 6-cent "Great Northwest Fort Snelling 1820 1970" stamp at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Just at the left of the "sweet spot" Anderson signs boldly in blue ballpoint. Anderson chaired the Fort Snelling Sesquicentennial Commission and spearheaded efforts to preserve and restore this site thus his signature on this cover is especially relevant. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. A printed Department of the Army "stuffer" enclosed notes that "This envelope existing in limited edition is probably unique in postal history" for a Post Office was created in Fort Snelling for one day only solely to issue and cancel this particular stamp. unknown

Berichtet Herrn "Sterrn" vom Abgang eines Kollegen, drückt sein Wohlwollen über die bevorstehende Ernennung von dessen Nachfolger aus und ersucht den Adressaten, diesem ein Schreiben zu übermitteln: "[...] Vom Steuger [?] Wilhelm erhielt ich [...] den Abanis. von Berg noch einen äußerst liebenswürdigen Besuch, dessen ich mit Januar seine glückliche Herufung vernehme. Er hat einen überaus wohlwollenden Character und nimmt an allem das lebhafteste Interesse. Noch ersuche ich Sie, die Güte zu haben anliegendes Schreiben an seine Adresse gelangen lassen zu wollen [...]". - Nach einem Studium der Rechtswissenschaften trat Andlaw 1824 in den badischen Staatsdienst ein. Er war über mehrere Jahre Sekretär der badischen Gesandtschaft in Wien, war als Ministerresident in München und Paris tätig und wirkte schließlich von 1845 bis zu seiner Pensionierung 1856 als badischer Gesandter in Österreich. - Spuren alter Faltung.

Goldene Worte aus sämmtlichen Werken, Reden und Briefen des Generalfeldmarschalls Grafen von Moltke" (Berlin 1890). - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf des Hofmarschalls Sr. Kgl. The Structure of the Atom

Very Good. 314 pp. Andrade was Quain Professor of Physics at the University of London 1928-1950 and a highly honored historian of the physical sciences. This is Andrade's first book originally published in England in 1923 intended as an introduction to atomic structure for the "serious student". This copy signed by Robert F. Bacher and dated in April 1925 while Bacher was a student. Bacher later followed Hans Bethe to Cornell in 1935 where he started doing experimental work in nuclear physics with Bethe and left theoretical work behind. He was quickly promoted to full professor and director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Studies. Early on he had felt that the United States needed to start doing war work and when Lee DuBridge head of the Radiation Lab working on radar at MIT summoned him there in 1941 he went. Then late in 1942 Oppenheimer who had been one of Bacher's instructors earlier at CalTech approached Bacher about a new lab for nuclear weapons work that was just starting up and the following spring asked him to join the Manhattan Project. Bacher declined initially telling Oppenheimer that what he needed was engineers. Ultimately when Oppenheimer made a commitment to hiring more engineers and made him head of the experimental physics division Bacher signed on. From the beginning Bacher was firmly opposed to making Los Alamos a military lab and persuaded Oppenheimer who had agreed to take a commission as lieutenant colonel and had already ordered his uniforms to keep it under civilian control at least until they had enough fissionable material for a bomb. When the project was reorganized in July 1944 to speed work on implosion Bacher's experimental physics division was split and he was put in charge of the G for "gadget" the code name for the bomb division. Bacher personally escorted the first bomb to the test site in July of 1945. In 1946 he was awarded the President's Medal for Merit for his work on the Manhattan Project. Bacher returned to Cornell hoping to get back to high-energy physics but the bomb's aftermath continued to involve him. He felt strongly that there should be some sort of international control of atomic weapons and worked hard on negotiations with the Soviet Union. He admitted in his oral history that this was perhaps idealistic but thought that getting this technology out in the open might have avoided the subsequent Cold War. When the Atomic Energy Commission was established Bacher served as the only scientist among its members; he had tried to decline the post but took it on when he learned that there would be no scientist at all if he didn't accept. While a member of the AEC he pushed for the development of nuclear submarines and breeder reactors for commercial power. In the meantime Lee DuBridge now president of Caltech offered him a position as chairman of the Division of Physics Mathematics and Astronomy or as just a professor whichever he preferred. "The decision I came to was a fateful one and probably illustrates a major failing in my makeup" Bacher said in the oral history. What he saw as a major failing in his makeup was in fact a superb talent for envisioning the future and leading the Institute into it. After getting a commitment that the Institute would support a program in high-energy physics both theoretical and experimental Bacher arrived in 1949. One of his first hires in high-energy physics was Robert Walker whom he had known at Los Alamos and Cornell. Another of Bacher's early recruits was Richard Feynman who was reportedly feeling "unsettled" at Cornell; Bacher persuaded him to sign on at Caltech with a sabbatical year in Brazil in between. Feynman then settled in Pasadena in 1951 for the rest of his career. Now with Feynman and Robert Christy who had come in 1946 Bacher felt he had the two most outstanding theorists from Los Alamos. Nach einem Studium der Germanistik in Köln begann er mit dem Roman "Bruder Luzifer" seine schriftstellerische Laufbahn, in der er sich überwiegend mit religiösen und autobiographischen Themen auseinandersetzte. Den Zweiten Weltkrieg und die ersten Nachkriegsjahre überwiegend in Positano verbringend, lebte er anschließend in Unkel am Rhein und Rom.
