Early signature dated 1839 to the title page of vol. 1 and versos of frontispieces second issue. In fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. Dickens turned in Oliver Twist to the novel of crime and terror fusing elements of the Gothic and the sensational with an unflinching realism about poverty violence and institutional cruelty. As Baugh observes while certain figures are rendered with “humorous realism†the prevailing tone is notably darker: the work is shadowed by “gloomy memories of the author’s own neglected childhood†and its most dramatic episodes unfold within an atmosphere “genuinely eerie and sinister.†The novel’s emotional intensity and moral urgency were not merely aesthetic choices but reflected Dickens’s broader conviction—widely shared among his contemporaries—that fiction could serve as an instrument of social reform. Through its exposure of the workhouse system the criminal underworld and the precariousness of childhood itself Oliver Twist advanced a sustained critique of social indifference and the structural injustices that shaped early Victorian life. One of the most exquisite Dickens library limited editions Extra-illustrated édition de luxe lettered "A" of 15 lettered sets in fine uniform bindings and adding over 200 original watercolours to enhance the "superb memorial" of Chapman and Hall's 1881-2 édition de Luxe. Printed on Japanese vellum this set was originally published by Chapman and Hall with more than 700 illustrations including all those from the first editions. The watercolour artists include H. C. Green and Joseph Clayton Clark 1857-1937 who worked under the name "Kyd" and dedicated almost his entire career to illustrating Dickensian characters to great success. Kyd's first Dickens illustrations appeared in 1887 in Fleet Street Magazine and as early as 1890 major Dickens collectors such as Thomas Wilson and Frederick Cosens sought his sketches. The British Museum acquired a collection of 598 Kyd illustrations of Dickens in 1910 and the V&A the Charles Dickens Museum and the University of Texas each have a significant collection. Even today Dickens's larger-than-life characters are in part imagined through Kyd's depictions and in 2012 six of his illustrations were issued as stamps by the Royal Mail to mark the 200th anniversary of Dickens's birth. 60 volumes large octavo 259 x 173 mm. London: Chapman and Hall 1861. In the well-preserved original cloth The fourth impression published two months after the first. The novel's instant popularity meant that five impressions were published in quick succession; copies of any impression in the original cloth are desirable. These first five impressions were printed sequentially in short order. To imply and encourage rapid sales Dickens's publishers advertised each fresh impression as a new edition. The present fourth impression stated on the title pages as the "fourth edition" had the smallest print run 500 copies and was published in September 1861 following the first in July. The second edition followed in 1862 when Chapman and Hall reset the text for their "library edition". 3 vols octavo. Publisher's 32-page catalogue at end of vol. III dated August 1861. Original purple wavy-grain cloth spines lettered in gilt floral decorations to covers in blind pale yellow coated endpapers. London: The Nonesuch Press 1937-39. Including an original steel plate illustrating Dickens's first published story First Nonesuch edition number 51 of 877 sets with an original plate. This example includes the steel plate that was used in the first edition of Sketches by Boz 1836 to illustrate "Mr Minns and his Cousin". The story represents a revised version of Dickens's first published work of fiction "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" The Monthly Magazine December 1833. The limitation matches the 877 original plates that were used for the first editions and kept in the archives of Dickens's publisher Chapman and Hall. Most of the plates were on steel though they also included woodblocks. This plate accompanied by a press pull as issued illustrates a startled Mr Minns "casting a diabolical look at the dog" of his cousin as the canine climbs up the dinner table. The Nonesuch Dickens was the press's largest project and greatest triumph. The publisher boldly claimed that "it will never be possible for a more complete and perfect edition to be put upon the market". Together 25 vols large octavo including the plate volume containing an original steel plate after Cruikshank and the Nonesuch Dickensiana in glassine and orange card box without lid. Illustrated throughout after the original plates. Original buckram in various colours black spine labels top edges gilt on the rough fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Letters I with indent to rear cover. Spines variously sunned wear to a couple of spine labels not affecting lettering cloth occasionally rubbed and with a few marks contents clean. A very good set. It is very likely that this edition was only released as a section and did not have a general cover but you had to put one around it yourself. Charles Dickens' Christmas story ""A Christmas Carol"" has been published in the Netherlands under various titles and in many translations. Here are some important points about the Dutch editions: The most common Dutch titles are ""Een Kerstlied"" ""Een Kerstvertelling"" ""Christmas ghost story"" and ""Een Kerstcadeau"". All parts strong and tight; soiling to the covers of part I with some light chipping to the fore-edge of the front wrap and a small corner of loss; small archival repairs to the rear wrap of part II lower front corner of part IV and spine of part VI soiling and repair to part X small repair to part XII with sections clipped from two of the ad inserts repair to spine of part XVI and the spine of the XIX/XX double issue; all other parts clean inside and out strong and very good or better. A handsome set of the first appearance of Nicholas Nickleby housed in a tailor made chemise and morocco spined solander box.<br /> <br /> From a bibliographical standpoint the set conforms largely with Hatton & Cleaver; the first issue points are present as called for the Amesbury Patent Support fold-out is present all five of the "Hill's Wafers" samples being present in good order and with the publisher's imprints being where required on the plates. <br /> Departures from Hatton & Cleaver's "perfect" collation as follows: in Part I the "Nickleby Advertiser" consists of only 6 pages rather than 12; Part IV the "Poor Man's Pill" ad insert is lacking; from Parts VII & VIII the Tyas "Heads of The People" advertisement slip is also absent; the Charles Tilt advert is absent from Part XI. Frank Williams served for 19 years in the SAS 15 on active service reaching the rank of Sergeant Major. Retiring in 1969 he was soon after awarded the BEM and became the owner of the David Garrick Hotel now Watercress Harry's in St Peter's Street Hereford where he built the Ulu Bar. The envelope measures 2.75 inches by 4.75 inches addressed in the hand of Dickens to the actor Drinkwater Meadows Esquire Prairie Cottage Barnes Green Barnes SW with Dickens' signature at lower left. Postmark London July 3 1866. The recipient Drinkwater Meadows a well-regarded actor played roles in several theatrical adaptations of Dickens' works including "Martin Chuzzlewit" 1844 and 'The Cricket on the Hearth" 1845. He died in 1869. In near fine condition. Minor loss to signature. Framed with an oval portrait of a young Dickens. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 11 inches. One page dated Sunday Seventeenth July 1859 on Gad's Hill Place stationery with a small pressed flower on the lower left hand corner. Boldly signed by Dickens with his usual flourish. The letter discusses the printing of Tale of Two Cities in monthly parts in his magazine All the Year Round. The letter reads in part "It is very important to me to know that we do not print too many and also what the monthly expenses are." Being founder and editor of the magazine Dickens was no doubt was very keen that they should avoid a surplus and possible financial losses on that account. In near fine condition with light toning and glue residue to the verso. The letter measures 5 inches by 8.25 inches. From the collection of Edith Hyde Colby 1876-1962 prominent leader in the New Jersey suffragette movement and first woman elected to the New Jersey Republican State Committee. Complete in 88 parts in original wraps housed in a tailor-made leather Solinger box and bookcloth chemise. Prefaces and preliminary matter present in Parts 26 52 and 88. The vast majority in very good condition with some light soiling creasing or inoffensive wear; Part 7 has a split to the spine Part 17 has an amateur repair Parts 29 & 30 have closed tears to the rear wrap and Parts 12 3237 81 83 85 87 and 88 have visible soiling or shallow chipping to the wraps to some extent. The majority are internally clean and fresh and all pieces present conform to the requirements called for in Hatton & Cleaver "Periodical Works of Charles Dickens" P. 163. A significant number of the parts bear the signature of "H. Evans Esq." discreetly to the upper front wrap. A very good complete set of a very unusual Dickens periodical publication. <br /> <br /> From a publishing perspective a bit of a botched experiment although sales at points were astronomically higher than expected and from a bibliographical standpoint something of a curiosity. Master Humphrey was available in this format initially each weekly part being 16 pages and priced at threepence; weekly parts were then gathered by Chapman and Hall and combined into the more usual trimmed monthly parts; then three volumes of the weekly parts bound together with yellow endpapers and trimmed edges were followed by a slightly shorter three volume edition with marbled endpapers and edges. Eckel states "Of the four issues the weekly one is difficult to obtain in a clean condition and is therefore the costliest." It's possible the entire concept would have been a costly failure had it not been for the legendary popularity of Little Nell going viral in "The Old Curiosity Shop" which makes up one of the full length stories encased in Master Humphrey's Clock. The concept itself is charming and typically Dickensian; Master Humphrey is an elderly antiquarian who keeps old manuscripts in the belly of a long case clock and invites his friends and confidantes to come read them. The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge make up the bulk of the long form narrative accompanied by numerous short stories sketches and anecdotal digressions. <br /> There's something quite unnerving about the Victorian preoccupation with presenting everything as a communal parlour game that probably has something to do with the very things Dickens highlights; Victorian London was haves and have-nots the invited and those who had to watch the feast from the other side of the window you either conformed and joined in the games or you were outside. The cast iron social awareness of your average Victorian must have been something to behold. <br /> Complete and presentable sets of either of the parts issues are hard to come by and the tales held in Master Humphrey's Clock are probably best read in this form one slim episode after another accompanied by ads for Mechli's Leadenhall emporium.
