Nell'autunno del 1959, alla Fiera del libro di Francoforte un giovane autore di nome Günter Grass presentò un romanzo che ebbe straordinaria risonanza e per molti versi segnò un nuovo inizio della letteratura tedesca: "Il tamburo di latta". La Germania occidentale pareva finalmente essersi scrollata da quella sorta di torpore del pensiero che aveva dominato i primi lustri post-bellici, intenzionata a interrogarsi senza remore sul più recente passato, a mettere in discussione certezze politiche, sociali e culturali. E di questo risveglio Grass fu uno dei protagonisti. Avendo ormai raggiunto un'età venerabile, lo scrittore ritiene che sia giunto il momento di ripercorrere quanto è accaduto in questo lungo mezzo secolo. Ma pensa di dare la parola a figli e figlie, affinché siano loro a raccontare e raccontarsi, a mettere a confronto le loro esperienze, a dire cosa ha significato nascere, crescere e vivere accanto a un padre tanto famoso, certamente poco autoritario ma anche poco propenso a giocare con loro, e da ultimo anche un po' ondivago a livello sentimentale. In questa polifonia di voci, a fare da raccordo è Maria Rama, una fotografa amica di vecchia data dello scrittore, che con la sua Agfa-Box del 1932, segue passo passo la vita dei ragazzi. Che di lei si fidano, perché quella semplice macchina fotografica, ha una magica prerogativa: nella camera oscura, al momento della stampa, oltre al soggetto, mostra anche il passato, il futuro e i desideri di ognuno di loro.

La ricreazione della mente. Una lettura del «Sorriso dell'ignoto marinaio»
br. "La ricreazione della mente" è un saggio sulla retorica della citazione. Sull'intarsio e sulla mimèsi barocca. Ha scritto Sarduy: "Ciò che appare nell'intarsio, con l'addizione di segmenti di grana differente..., è l'artificio verniciato del dipinto in prospettiva; fingendo di denotare un'altra figura, l'intarsio espone la sua specifica organizzazione convenzionale della rappresentazione. La stessa cosa vale per il linguaggio barocco: ritorno su se stesso, evidenziazione del suo specifico riflesso, messa in scena del suo macchinario". Salvatore Grassia analizza la scrittura del "Sorriso dell'ignoto marinaio" di Consolo. Ne ricostruisce i palinsesti. Ne sfoglia gli strati, declinati dal "Consiglio d'Egitto" di Sciascia, dai grandi barocchi italiani, e dal "barocco tropicale" di Alejo Carpentier. "La ricreazione della mente" (titolo che rimanda al secentesco trattato di malacologia di Filippo Buonanni: "Ricreatone dell'occhio e della mente nell'osservation delle chiocciole") è anche un trattatello (alla Manganelli) sull'"impostura" letteraria, ridefinita lungo il percorso che da Manzoni porta a Sciascia.

Un gigante la cui opera più famosa, Horcynus Orca, fa paura ai più per la mole anch'essa fuori dall'ordinario. Un uomo solo e schivo, come viene descritto, ma capace di grande generosità. Un perfezionista della parola che ha contribuito, involtariamente, a costruire un'immagine di sè che affonda le proprie radici nel mito, proprio come il suo romanzo. Un letterato che ha avuto nella moglie Jutta la sua prima grande sostenitrice, morale e materiale, tanto da descriverla, nella dedica dell'Horcynus come colei che "meriterebbe di figurare in copertina col suo Stefano".
