La raccolta, in cui i componimenti dialettali sono trascritti con assoluta fedeltà ortografica, è preceduta da un lungo discorso intorno alla poesia popolare italiana. In essa sono adunate 153 canzoni popolari, 16 orazioni e giaculatorie religiose, 200 strambotti e stornelli, numerose cantilene, giochi, rime infantili. Di estremo interesse i commenti apposti alle canzoni a carattere storico, riguardanti la vendetta di Rosmunda su Alboino, la marcia del principe Tommaso su Torino, il matrimonio contro la sua volontà di Carolina di Savoia con il Principe-Duca di Sassonia.
