‎Rare carte satirique de l'Europe en 1871, dessinée et lithographiée en couleurs par Paul Hadol, illustrant la situation politique à l'issue de la Guerre franco-allemande ou guerre franco-prussienne, qui se déroula du 19 juillet 1870 au 28 janvier 1871. Chaque pays a les traits d'un individu emblématique qui lui donne corps. La France, vaincue et humiliée par l'Allemagne, est représentée par le corps de Marianne endeuillée, qui pleure ses enfants d'Alsace-Lorraine. L'Alsace-Lorraine fut annexée par les Allemands à l'issue de la guerre. La Prusse voisine «s'étend de tout son poids sur l'Allemagne entière». Le pays est entièrement occupé par un corpulent Bismarck, le chancelier de fer de la Prusse, représenté les bras tendus agrippant les «enfants d'Alsace et de Lorraine», auxquels Marianne donnait le sein, et écrasant l'Autriche de son genou gauche. La Suisse, la Belgique et la Hollande, sont représentées par des pendules. La légende indique que ces trois pays sont «autant de pendules que guettent les déménageurs de Guillaume», soit Guillaume Ier, empereur de l'Empire allemand fondé en 1871. Le symbole des pendules s'explique par le fait qu'en 1871, en France, les Allemands s'étaient emparés de nombreuses pendules lors des pillages. L'Angleterre «s'oublie dans le gin», vraisemblablement du gin irlandais, l'Irlande étant elle-même représentée par des bouteilles de gin. L'Espagne, du haut de son royaume, domine un Portugal apeuré, tandis qu'elle «ne fait que changer de baise-mains royal». La Corse et la Sardaigne «en perdent la tête » et tournent le dos à l'Italie. Le nord de l'Italie s'affiche avec l'image de son grand leader de l'époque, Giuseppe Garibaldi, tandis que le sud est représenté par le Pape Pie IX. La Grèce et la Turquie d'Europe, couvrant l'actuelle Europe centrale, sont écrasées sous la pression des autres pays. La Turquie est représentée par une femme qui se prélasse, tout en fumant le narguilé. La Suède et la Norvège «effrayées se rapprochent». Enfin, la Russie est représentée par un imposant personnage qui domine toute l'Europe et ressemble à un croque-mitaine qui «épie le moment pour jeter son filet et prendre aussi quelques pendules», tandis qu'il écrase la Crimée de son pied gauche. Derrière lui se trouve la Sibérie où figurent deux prisonniers. Paul Hadol (1835-1875), illustrateur et caricaturiste français, est également l'auteur d'une carte satirique de l'Europe en 1870, dressée peu avant que n'éclate la Guerre franco-allemande. Piqûres dans la marge supérieure, déchirures marginales restaurées, traces de pliures.‎

‎Hardcover, 8vo, 48 leaves, 24 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT (S) : Responsa -- 1600-1800. Hagiz (1672-c. 1751) was a “scholar, kabbalist, and opponent of Shabbateanism; son of Jacob Hagiz. He was born in Jerusalem and studied with his grandfather, Moses Galante. He appears to have quarreled in his youth with the rabbis and lay leaders of Jerusalem, for when in 1694 he left Erez Israel to collect money to found a yeshivah in Jerusalem, damaging letters were sent after him to the communities to which he turned. Moses visited Egypt and then Italy, where in 1704 he published his father’s Halakhot Ketannot. He traveled by way of Prague to Amsterdam where he made contact with Zevi Hirsch Ashkenazi, then rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, and collaborated with him in an energetic struggle against Shabbateanism and its secret adherents. When in 1713 Ashkenazi and Moses refused to retract the excommunication of the Shabbatean Nehemiah Hayon, a fierce quarrel broke out between them and the elders of the Portuguese community. In 1714 when Ashkenazi resigned his rabbinical office and left Amsterdam, Moses was compelled to leave with him. He went first to London with Ashkenazi, there continuing the fight against Hayon and his allies, and then to Altona, home of Jacob Emden, Ashkenazi’s son, where he resumed the struggle against Shabbateanism. Among those he attacked were Michael Abraham Cardoso and even Jonathan Eybeschuetz, and he took the offensive against Moses Hayyim Luzzatto, inducing the rabbis of Venice to excommunicate him. In 1738 Moses returned to Erez Israel and settled in Safed. He died in Beirut and was taken to Sidon for burial. A talmudic scholar of the first rank and a prolific writer, Moses was assisted by a good grounding in secular knowledge and by a command of several foreign languages. In Altona he was friendly with Johann Christopher Wolf, who mentions him in his Bibliotheca Hebraica. His works include Leket ha-Kemah, novellae on the Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim and Yoreh De’ah, and Even ha-Ezer; responsa Shetei ha-Lehem; the ethical treatises Zerror ha-Hayyim and Mishnat hakhamim; Elleh ha-Mitzvot, on the numeration of precepts in Maimonides’ Sefer ha-Mitzvot, on the Oral Law, and on Kabbalah; Sefat Emet; and Parashat Elleh Masei, on the sanctity of the land of Israel.
