Paris, Philippe Buache, 1745.‎

‎Hand-coloured engraved map (635 x 505 mm). A fine example of Philippe Buache's edition of Guillaume de l'Isles highly detailed map of the region centered on the Red Sea. The map extends west to include Sicily, the Southeastern Mediterreanean, Barbaria, Nigritie, and a Guinea on the West Coast of Africa. To the east, the map includes the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf of Aden and the Kingdom of Ajan and Dadel. De l'Isle's maps provided the first truly scientific mapping of the regions covered, showing the flamboyant Dutch style of illustrations and adopting a highly detailed and decorative approach to the printed map. The result is a combination of spectacular detail and accuracy, not approached by the Dutch or any other 17th Century map makers. The detail in this map reflects this Renaissance of style and accuracy. Tibbetts 199. Cf.

‎4to. (16), 540, (10), (2 blank) pp. With a woodcut and an engraved author's portrait, 34 woodcut illustrations in text, including several full-page, and some woodcut initals, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine. Rare first edition of a travelogue by the French explorer, merchant and diplomat François de la Boullaye-Le Gouz (ca. 1610-69). The largest part of the book deals with his travels through the Middle East and India, while a smaller parts treats Le Gouz's travels through Europe. In 1643 he travelled the Middle East under the name Ibrahim Beg, visiting Syria, Palestine, Persia, Egypt, Anatolia and Armenia. "Like so many European travellers in the east he adopted oriental clothes and an oriental name ... Unlike most European travellers to the east, however, La Boullaye-Le Gouz continued to wear his Persian clothes in his return to France and was consequently regarded as something of a curio" (Hamilton). A few years later he was sent by the French king with an embassy to the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan, where he met and became great friends with the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660). - La Boullaye-Le Gouz describes the routes he takes, the cities he visits and the people he meets along the way, with frequent observations on religion, natural history and commerce. The illustrations show various Indian deities, some city views or buildings, Indian and Eastern costumes, plants and trees. Pages 243-255 deal with plants, fruits and trees in India, including several palm trees, a fig tree, a jack tree and a melon tree. "The work is notable for its information on northern India and its relations to Persia, and for its inclusion of a summary of the Ramayana" (Howgego). - In Europe, Le Gouz travelled Italy, Greece, Poland, England, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands. In his later years he travelled again to Persia and died in Isfahan probably in 1669, whereafter the Shah ordered a splendid funeral to be held. Included at the end of the book is a list of names of the people La Boullaye-Le Gouz met, sorted by country; a list of uncommon words, and a table of contents. A second, enlarged edition was published in 1657 at Troyes. - Binding rubbed, restored and front hinge partly cracked. Occasional small (water) stains, otherwise in very good condition internally. Atabey 645. Hage-Chahine 2526. Hamilton, Europe and the Arab world 22. Howgego, to 1800, L4. Slot, The Arabs of the Gulf 1602-1784, p. 410. WorldCat (5 copies). Not in Blackmer.‎

‎Folio (235 x 335 mm). Engraved title, 3 pp. of dedication, 1 leaf (Privilege du Roy), 12 leaves of text interleaved with 12 engraved plates, woodcut headpieces and initials. The plates, probably by Noel (not Nicolas) Cochin after La Chapelle, show costumes against a scenic background. Contemporary full vellum. First edition, very rare. Georges de la Chappelle, a native of Caen, accompanied the French envoy Le Haye to the Porte and spent several years in the Levant. His work is known to us almost exclusively through these engravings, showing what Thieme/Becker described as "the prettiest ladies in the Imperial Seraglio". In the introductory text included in this first edition, La Chappelle explains that the series was occasioned by a recent French edition of Chalcocondyles, in which (as he complains) the women's costumes were very poorly drawn. La Chappelle clearly had a special interest in female costume: "his own representations are highly detailed, with special attention paid to the fabulous jewels and fine needlework that adorn the garments of Levantine costume. (According to the preface, the accuracy of his drawings could be attested by Le Haye [...], in whose presence the drawings were executed.) To add verisimilitude to the plates, examples of Turkish, Persian, Tartar, Armenian and Greek costume are depicted against topographical backgrounds showing the areas in and around Constantinople in which the models were most likely to reside" (Atabey). Curiously, several of these backgrounds, when placed side by side, form a near-consecutive panorama of Constantinople and its environs. - Occasional light brownstains; wants front flyleaf. Vellum slightly stained and wrinkled; lower cover shows traces of old calculations. An attractive copy in a strictly contemporary binding. Atabey 648. Colas 1697. Thieme/Becker VI, 378f. Cf. Blackmer 935 (2nd edition). Not in Lipperheide or Cohen/de Ricci.‎

Paris, Pierre Herissant, 1695.‎

‎4 vols. (24), 484, (28) pp. (4), 470, (18) pp. (4), 599, (1), 89 (1) pp. (40), 411, (5) pp. With a total of 2 engr. frontispieces (in vols. 1 and 4). Original French calf with giltstamped spine. Encompassing study of the Ottoman Empire in the late 17th century, at a time when its power in Europe was waning, but it remained a force to be reckoned with. Rare, especially when including the 4th volume ("Suite de l'Etat general de l'Empire otoman [...] Quatrieme tome") which contains accounts of the state of the Greek, Armenian and Maronite churches in the Ottoman Empire. "According to the Gennadius Library, this was translated by Petis de la Croix and edited by La Croix. In fact the privilege is ceded to La Croix, former secretary of the French embassy at Constantinople. It seems likely that there must be a family connection between the two, although the original family of Petis de la Croix was Petis, not La Croix" (Atabey). - Binding slightly rubbed, but on the whole in good condition. The Atabey copy (3 volumes only) commanded £15,000 at Sotheby's in 2002 (lot 646). Atabey 651. OCLC 470426837. Not in Blackmer or Cobham-Jeffrey.‎

‎8vo. (16), 570, (54) pp. Title printed in red and black. With engr. frontispiece, engr. title vignette, 1 folding engr. map, and 3 engr. plates. Contemporary brown full calf with richly gilt spine in six compartments. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. First edition of this missionary history of India, based not only on the works of Goueva, Geddes, Bernier, and Tavernier, but also on the manuscripts of Ziegenbalg, whose Danish mission is described on pp. 536-566. Includes an account of the trial and execution of a King of Ormuz for sodomy, "un peché infame fort connu à Rome aussi-bien qu'en Orient" (p. 340), and a defence of Islam against the common charge of being a religion established and maintained through war and violence (p. 525). The author "questions the logic of corrupt Portuguese authority over good Indians; religion is merely a pretext for European domination, it would be more appropriate for the Indian subjects to give religious instruction to their European rulers" (Teltscher). The plates show the Hindu godheads Brahma, Ishvara (Shiva), and Vishnu. - Binding slightly rubbed; hinges weakened. Occasional slight foxing. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). OCLC 18426305. Cf. K. Teltscher, India described. ‎La Mottraye, Aubry de.‎

‎Voyages en Europe, Asie & Afrique. Den Haag, Johnson & van Duren, 1727.‎

‎Folio (200 x 315 mm). 2 vols. (14), 472, 23 pp. (6), 496, 39 pp. With 2 engr. frontispieces, 2 engr. title vignettes, 47 engr. plates (some folding) after Hogarth, Picard and others, and 4 folding engr. maps. Modern half calf. First edition in French. "This important work describes La Mottraye’s travels over a 26-year period which took him through Northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant. The plates are of particular interest and include many signed by Hogarth which form part of his early work. They illustrate antiquities, objets d’art, and scenes of the eastern life. Especially interesting is a plate showing a dance at a Greek wedding, with each member of the party dressed in a different costume" (Blackmer). Chapter XII of vol. 1 discusses the Quran, and the Appendix contains extracts from a manuscript on the Muslim faith as well as a section on the Islamic calendar. "Aubry de la Mottraye, a Huguenot, travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Africa during the years 1696 to 1729, beginning in Scandinavia, where he became a confidant of Charles XII. He then went on to Tartary and the Levant. The work contains several notable costume plates, particularly relating to the Levant, some of which may have been inspired by Ferriol and Le Hay's 'Recueil de cent estamped représentant différentes nations du Levant' (1714)" (Atabey). - Occasional edge defects, repaired. Paris, H. J. Jansen, an VIII [= 1799/1800].‎

‎3 vols. 4to (2 text volumes) and folio (atlas). XVI, 442 pp. 332, 113, (1) pp. Atlas with engr. title page, large folding map (590 x 865 mm) and 43 full-page engr. plates (numbered 2-44), including 14 botanical plates drawn or completed by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Modern mottled half calf, each spine with gold decorated rules and 2 green sheepskin labels, decorated paper sides ("schrottel"/sprinkled pattern over a paste wash), text volumes with sprinkled edges. First edition of Labillardière's famous and finely illustrated narrative, a classic work of travel literature. The mysterious disappearance of the great French explorer Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse led to much speculation in France. On 9 Feb. 1791 the Constituent Assembly passed a decree ordering, among other things, that the King be petitioned to order the fitting out of one or more ships equipped with naturalists, scientists and draughtsmen, with the twofold mission of searching for M. de la Pérouse and of making inquiries relative to the sciences and to commerce. Two ships, La Recherche under the command of Rear-Admiral D'Entrecasteaux and L'Espérence under the command of Captain Kermadec, were fitted out. Proceeding via the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, they made extensive investigations of its coastline. They also visited New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, the Admiralty Islands, Tonga, New Britain and other groups, making extensive inquiries, but found no trace of the missing navigator (cf. Ferguson). The voyage, however, yielded a vast amount of new and valuable information on Australia's natural history and the aboriginal people of Tasmania. - Plates include views of the Admiralty Islands, Tasmania, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tonga and impressive portraits of their inhabitants, while other plates show ethnographical objects, birds and plants. Most plates were engraved by Copia or Perée after Piron. The botanical plates were engraved after drawings by the celebrated Belgian botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redouté (10 plates) and after Piron, completed by Redouté (4 plates). Three of the four ornithological plates were engraved after Jean Baptiste Audebert. - In the same year Janssen also published an 8vo edition, followed by several editions in French, German and English. In 1826 some materials from La Pérouse's ships were traced back to the island Vanikoro, and a 1964 expedition identified the remains of one of his ships there. Further investigations concluded that both both ships were wrecked there and that most of the men who survived the wreck were killed by natives. A few eventually left the island, but their fate remains unknown. - Each text volume has the library stamp of the British Admiralty Office on the title and final page, those on the title pages with cancellation stamp. Plates mounted on new stubs, a few plates slightly frayed along the edges, some mostly marginal foxing and occasionally other spots or smudges, more serious in the title pages and half-titles, otherwise in very good condition. Nissen, ZBI 2331. Ferguson 307. Hocken, New Zealand, 28f. Kroepelien 697. Sabin 38420. Stafleu/C. 4070. Cf. Hill 178 (8vo ed.). Not in Catalogue of Redoutéana.‎

‎Le nationalisme asiatique (Les Touraniens - Les Iraniens - Les Arabes). Article (27 pages) dans La Revue Universelle.‎

‎Num?ro complet.‎

‎Laborde, Léon [Emmanuel Simon Joseph] de.‎

‎Voyage de l'Arabie Pétrée. Paris, Giard, 1830.‎

‎Imperial folio (420 x 596 mm). (8), 87, (1) pp. With large lithographed title vignette and coat of arms of Wilhelm II on dedication leaf. 69 lithographed plates, maps and plans after Laborde and Linant de Bellefonds, mostly mounted on India paper (3 of which folding or double-page and 1 coloured). Period-style half calf with gilt title to spine. First edition of "an important work" (Blackmer), complete with all the magnificent views in large folio format. All subsequent editions, including the English one, were published in octavo and retained only a few plates of the original edition, all in considerably reduced format. Laborde made the journey to Petra with the engineer Linant de Bellefonds in 1828, travelling from Suez via St. Catherine's and through Wadi al-Araba to Akabah. Although Burckhardt, Irby and Mangles had explored Petra before Laborde, he was the first to make detailed drawings of the area. Dedicated to the Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse (1777-1847). - Slight browning and foxing, occasional waterstaining and tears to folds; a small tear in the map repaired, but in all a good, wide-margined copy. Rare: the last complete copy came up for auction in 2009 (Christie's, 3 June, lot 120: £23,750). Blackmer 929. Gay 929. Henze III, 101. Brunet III, 714. Vicaire IV, 758f. Nissen ZBI, 2335. Not in Atabey. Cf. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 1386 (2nd ed. only).

Mayeur/Hilaire, zit. in WBIS/ABF 3.0266.378.‎

‎Lacoste, Pierre-Eugène, painter (1818-1907).‎

‎Oriental scene. No place, 1892.‎

‎Watercolour on paper, 290 x 460 mm, matted (600 x 398 mm). Beautiful orientalist watercolour, inscribed by the artist "à Monsieur Coullon, souvenir affectueux". Lacoste, a genre painter equally adept at landscapes and architecture, was a student of Rouillet, Cambon, and Cogniet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1907, also drawing costumes for the various Parisian scenes, including for the Opéra from 1876 to 1885. His series of watercolours painted for Verdi's "Aida" in 1880 is remarkable; a design for "Ramses" is now kept at the Getty Museum. The present orientalist scene is typical of its age but distinguished by its large format and masterly quality. It shows a Middle Eastern oasis with Moorish-type buildings near a palm grove reflected in a waterhole, surrounded by eight characters in local costumes going about their lives: a man is perched on his camel; two men are wearing red hats; two women, possibly slaves, carry jugs on their heads. In the foreground, cargo unloaded from a camel suggests a Bedouin desert stopover. - Slight foxing and waterstaining to matte, not concerning the painting.‎

‎Lafuente y Alcantara, Emilio.‎

Madrid, Imprenta Nacional, 1859.‎

‎4to. XIII, (1), 15-242, (2) pp. With a folding family tree. Near-contemporary full vellum with giltstamped borders and spine title, original 1860 upper wrapper cover bound within. Endpapers with floral pattern. The first (and only early) edition of this detailed study of Arabic inscriptions found in Granada, with the texts of the inscriptions set in naskh Arabic type and also translated into Spanish. It includes many poems, notably those of Ibn Zamrak (1333-93), as well as Lafuente's overview of the history and genealogy of the Moorish Nasrid dynasty (1230-1492) that ruled the Emirate of Granada, the last Islamic realm in Spain. Emilio Lafuente y Alcantara (1825-68), a disciple of Don Pascual de Gayangos and José Moreno Nieto, includes much information from documents he had newly discovered himself. He was "gifted with great erudition and love of scholarship" and condemned mediaeval Christian intolerance of Islam, the destruction of Arabic manuscripts during the Inquisition and the damage done to the Alhambra by rebuilding under Charles V. In his present first major publication, Lafuente attempts to document surviving Arabic inscriptions in Spain before anyone could destroy or incompetently restore them. This quickly established him as one of the leading oriental scholars of the Iberian peninsula, but his work was cut short by his premature death nine years later. The book, reissued in 1860 with no change except for the date on the new wrappers, inspired a new interest in Iberian Arabic poetry, but was largely forgotten by bibliographers of Arabic studies. It was reprinted without revisions in 2000 and remains an important source for Islamic Granada. - Vellum covers slightly warped. Paper evenly browned throughout; slightly foxed in places. Near-contemporary handwritten English annotations in ink and pencil to p. 169, correcting Lafuente's claim that a large vase had disappeared from the Alhambra and probably is to be found "ornamenting the cabinet of some Englishman, passionate for our things": "This is a mistake entirely. The great 2nd jar is in the Museum at Madrid [...]". James T. Monroe, Islam and the Arabs in Spanish scholarship (1970), pp. 119-122. Palau 129800. ‎Laiglesia y Darrac, Francisco.‎

[Madrid], 1830.‎

‎Folio (30 cm). Double-page ink wash drawing of the idealized (Arabian-bred) Spanish horse, [8], 198, [4 blank], [2], 25 pp; with separate 13 pp. of addenda. Bound in contemporary half black calf over marbled boards, gilt titles and ornaments on spine. Binding a little rubbed, contents very good. Manuscript on Spanish watermarked paper "Manuel Serra 1829", written in neat cursive throughout with occasional flourishes. Signed twice by the author, "Francisco De Laiglesia Y Darrac", dated "Madrid 24 Mayo de 1830". Bookplate on pastedown of the noted Spanish collector José Gallart Folch. Highly important manuscript, being the author's autograph copy - possibly for presentation to the dedicatee (the King of Spain). Darrac's groundbreaking treatise on the admixture of Arabian bloodlines to the Spanish horse was subsequently accepted by the King and printed 'by Royal decree' in the following year, 1831. "To assure that Spain would have ready supply of quality horses and mules, the recommendations first purposed by Francisco Laiglesia Y Darrac in his brilliant 1831 book Memoria sobre la cria caballar en Espana - causas del aniquilamiento de nuestros caballos (Thesis on Horse Breading in Spain- Causes of the Annihilation of Our Horses) were finally adopted. Laiglesia might well be called the father of the Arabian horse of Spain, because he was the first to advocate the importation of a large group of desert-bred stallions and mares as the only means of recuperating the lost qualities in Spain's horses. In the same work he also articulated the first detailed plan for the creation of the Cria Caballar, the Stud Book Español, the National Stud" (Steen). - A horse expert with the Royal Army, Laiglesia's treatise is wonderfully detailed and shows a thorough knowledge of Arabians and their bloodlines. His main thesis argues that with the introduction of as few as 20 of the best pure-bred Arabians, the entire country's stock of horses can be 'regenerated' in a few generations. To this end he launches into an in-depth discussion of the logistics of this plan, ranging from discussions of the desert Bedouin origin of the purest Arabians, from the regions surrounding Sanaa and Nedjed-el-Areb in the Arabian Gulf (Section 65) to an intimate familiarity with the different classes of Arabians from these bloodlines (Hatiks or Kadischi & Kochlani). Laiglesia notes with admiration that the practice of recording the bloodlines of these Arabians is extremely meticulous at the court of the Emir. - Laiglesia also addresses the problems of how to select the best pure-bred Arabians based on proportion, etc., as well as the difficulties in procuring them. He insists that they must be purchased 'on-site' in Arabia Felix and then brought to a station in Aleppo for inspection, en route to Spain. Laiglesia even suggests the most comfortable means of transporting the precious horses (by warship, rather than a smaller merchant vessel which doesn't have enough space). Interestingly, one measure for Laiglesia of the superiority of Arabians is their excellence in horse-races: he points out that all the greatest English champions (Flying Childers, High Flyer, Eclipse, etc.) have all been bred from Arabian stock. - The present author's manuscript and its illustration in fact show significant differences compared to the printed book, which is itself extremely rare (just 3 copies worldwide, according to OCLC). For the printed book, cf OCLC 63603570 (U Barcelona, British Library, U Penn); Palau 130186; Fairman Rogers Collection on the Horse, 453. Cf also Andrew K. Steen, El Caballo Arabe en España, 1831 a 1934 (2007).‎
