Uniform decorated brown cloth. Reprint of a work on archeology in China, published in the years 1922-1933, written by the German orientalist and archaeologist Albert von Le Coq (1860-1930). From 1902 to 1914, Le Coq led three of the four German expeditions to the Turfan (or Turpan) area, in Xingjian, China. The expeditions were initiated by the German archaeologist Albert Grünwedel. "The principal spoils of these expeditions were literary. Vast numbers of Chinese manuscripts were obtained from every center, both secular and religious. … Besides securing manuscripts, these expeditions examined caves decorated with stucco figures and with frescoes…" (Couling). The text gives a brief history of the expeditions, the different sites they excavated, including grottoes and temples, which are also shown on some of the smaller illustrations, followed by descriptions of the objects shown on the plates. "The civilization thus revealed is a mixture of Persian, Indian, Chinese, Hellenic etc." (Couling). Both Grünwedel and Le Coq went back to Berlin with thousands of artefacts, of which many are shown in the plates. The second volume, titled Die Manichaeischen Miniaturen, deals with fragments of illuminated manuscripts, the other volumes deal mainly with either sculpture, mural paintings or frescoes and their techniques. The fourth expedition ended early due to the outbreak of the First World War, but compared to the earlier expeditions they collected the most artefacts during this short stay. - All volumes in very good condition. Hector Le Couteulx de Canteleu (1827-1910) was an officer of the French cavalry and a specialist in par force hunting. - Light foxing, but still a very well preserved specimen. The present set includes numerous important agreements reached during the interwar period between the western powers and those of the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, the Trucial States, Yemen, and Oman. - To cite but a few examples, vol. 71 includes the full Arabic and English text of the "Treaty of Friendship and good understanding between his Britannic Majesty and his Majesty the King of Hejaz and of Nejd and its dependencies. Variant issue of the first edition, probably the second issue altogether. "Le Chevalier had assisted Choiseul-Gouffier in his 'Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce', and was then sent to Jassy to observe Russian troop movements. His work is an account of a journey round the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea" (Atabey). While Chatzipanagioti-S. differentiates between the first and the second edition, the present variant is not described: the verso of the half-title of vol. 1 shows only the "avis au relieur"; p. 168: "Fin du tome premier"; p. 169 (beginning of text in vol. 2) is unpaginated. Thus, this apparently constitutes the second issue of the first editon. - Lechevalier stood in the service of Choiseul-Gouffier; from 1787 onwards he accompanied Alexander Ipsilanti on a tour of the Mediterranean which lasted several months. The maps show the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the Bosporus, Constantinople, and Brussa. - Both title pages have contemporary ownership stamps ("S" with princely crown); a few minor tears to maps have been professionally repaired; some staining to title page of vol. 2. Marbled endpapers. Scarce first French edition of the famous description of Islamic Africa and Arabia, with the illustrations coloured by a contemporary hand; the first collection of voyages printed in France. The book was originally written in Arabic around 1526 by the Berber Andalusi geographer and traveller al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (ca. 1494-ca. 1554), known in the West as Johannes Leo Africanus, translated into Italian by the author and first published in Venice in 1550. The Arabian Peninsula is depicted nearly complete on the double-page woodcut map and is treated extensively in the first chapter, which contains information on its people, cities, geography, religion, customs, costumes, etc. Illustrations include Arabian camels and veiled women. - Johannes Leo took his Christian name from his sponsor Pope Leo X when he converted to Christianity after his capture in 1520. While still very young he began to travel widely in the Barbary States; in 1513 he appears to have started on his famous Sudan and Sahara journeys (1513-15). In 1516-17 he travelled to Constantinople, probably visiting Egypt on the way; it is more uncertain when he visited Arabias, Armenia and Tartary. His three Egyptian journeys, immediately after the Turkish conquest, all probably fell between 1517 and 1520; on one of these he ascended the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine head and hinges professionally repaired. Repairs to lower margin of first two leaves (very slight loss of title border), some toning and soiling, water- and inkstains. Very occasional marginal tears or worming. Early marginalia and ink ownerships on title page ("Pacauld" and "Ex Bibliotheca Joh. Huyseri", i. e. Johann Huyser). No other auction record of a coloured copy in RBH or ABPC. Adams L 482. Lepsius (1810-84), leader of the 1842/45 Prussian expedition to Egypt. In this treatise, he presented what must be regarded as one of the earliest attempts at a standardised phonetic alphabet for all languages - a function today fulfilled by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is still based primarily on the Latin alphabet. Among the many alphabetical systems which Lepsius takes into account are also Egyptian hieroglyphs as well as Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, Sanscrit, Bengali, Armenian, Malay, Chinese, etc. - Somewhat browned and brownstained throughout with a noticeable waterstain.
