Privilege title in red/black Dedication to Charles II on verso is the Privilege repeated Approbation on verso Index 1135 pp. 824 pp. 1386 pp. 562 pp. 551 pp 5 large engraved vignettes and 5 large engraved initials. Some tears and repairs to margins some staining and soiling mainly marginal. With 25 double-page of which 9 are folded engraved maps the main part signed by the artists Francis Lamb and Wenceslaus Hollar. Some maps strenghtened on verso some brownspots some cut close a few with repaired corners the map of Spain repaired in 3 corners with some loss of image. A few wormtracts sometimes browning to foldings. � First edition with all 5 parts and complete with 25 maps. Although this atlas was never reprinted the maps were used over the following 25 years in successive editions of Varenius's Cosmography.<br><br>"In 1667 the first of a new series of maps were engraved for Blome's A Geographical Description.1670. The completed volume was in small folio and contained 24 maps plus one duplicated engraved by Francis Lamb Thomas Burnford and Wenceslas Hollar. The maps in the atlas as is clearly stated in the title to each are copied from the equivalent map published by the French geographer and mapmaker Nicolas Sanson and issued in his Cartes Generales de toutes les Parties du Monde of 1658. Althought this was not an original publication it is worth pointing out that that this was the first new folio atlas to be published in England since 1627 the year Speed's Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts of the world appeared which also relied on continental geographical models. Furthermore this is the first folio and quite possibly the very first world atlas wholly engraved printed and published in England.It would be hard to claim a successful career for Blome but he occupies a very importent position in the history of the English map-trade of the seventeenth century. He was the first publisher in England for 40 years to prepare a new folio world atlas the first in over sixty years to publish a new set of albeit small folio county maps the first to seriously plan an illustrated description of London and the first to plan a series of volumes related to the various Continents of the World." Excepting the geographical parts of Pliny�s Historia naturalis where Mela is cited as an important authority the De situ orbis is the only formal treatise on the subject in Classical Latin. Complete with all 65 maps called for each measuring ab. 19 x 26 cm. A great part of the maps have some background shadowing from the printers ink mainly due to the fact that this is the third Ruscelli-edition where the plates have been used before. 3 printer's wood-cut devices and 20 smaller and larger woodcuts in the text. 2 woodcuts with Ptolemy shown observing. � Third edition of Ruscelli's translation from Venice 1561. The maps are printed from the same plates with the exception of Ptolemy's map of the world for which Malomba had returned to the original conical projection of Ptolemy. Moreover one map is added: the map of "Territorio di Roma". <br>In general the maps are enlarged copies of Gastaldi's maps from the edition of 1548 which came out in 8vo. Husum Matthias et Nicolaus Petersen 1652. Folio. 48x34 cm. Bound in a fine contemp. full calf with raised bands. Covers with rectangular triple gilt borders and a large gilt centerpiece. The binding expertly restored with rebacking edges and corners neatly repaired. Scratches on covers repaired. Edges gilt. Endpapers renewed. Engraved ornamental title-page. 83013 pp. and 40 double-page maps and plans 43x52 cm some larger with original HAND-COLOURING IN OUTLINE. Title with a small stamp in upper margin. Lower margin of title-page a bit frayed. Small wormholes at end mainly marginal but a few in image of last 2 maps. With the usual browning to text and maps. � First edition of the first full mapping of Schleswig-Holstein and the FIRST ATLAS PRINTED IN DENMARK. <br><br>The work is highly esteemed as the mapping and surveying by the Danish cartographer Johannes Mejer showed a precision which was without competition at its time. <br><br>Mejer was educated in the tradition of Tycho Brahe and Longomontanus and in the years 1638-48 he mapped Schleswig-Holstein and published these 37 maps in Danckwerth's description of Schleswig-Holstein. These maps were the best for nearly 150 years and were used by Blaeu and other carthographers. The Danish King Chr. IV urged him to proceed with his mapping of Denmark which he did for some years making maps of Jutland and a general map of Denmark in order to make a Nordic atlas but only these 37 maps were published. Because the quality of the maps was of such a high quality compared with the surveying of the day the Younger Blaeu used these maps made re-engravings of them and printed the whole series in his "Atlas Maior" 1662.<br><br>Coloured copies are very scarce the offered item is only coloured in outline. With 25 double-page engraved maps 2 overview maps and an engraved plate with 8 scales all hand-coloured partly in outline. Half textured red cloth ca. 1860.
40 23 1 blank pp. plus maps and plate of scales.A surprisingly rare pocket atlas illustrating the theatre of the "tegenwoordigen" present war probably meaning the War of the Austrian Succession 1740-1748 but possibly the Seven Years' War 1756-1763. The title-page notes that it is suited for officers travellers and lovers of geography to carry in a pocket. The text in Dutch gives a geographic description only of "Duytsland" Germany including Austria Bohemia and a few other areas whereas the maps also cover the Low Countries the English Channel northwest France and to the east as far as Warsaw Krakow and Belgrade. The 23 detail maps were designed so that they could be assembled with the key map to make a single wall map whose cartographic image would measure 53 x 90 cm.With a contemporary owner's bookplate embossed stamp and library labels. With the text leaves somewhat browned not affecting the maps or the plate with scales and the first 2 leaves slightly worn but generally in good condition. The predecessor of this fine atlas was Jacques Nicolas Bellin's 1703-1772 "Essai Geographique sur les Isles Britanniques" published in Paris in 1757 and prepared to facilitate the planned French invasion of Britain in 1759 as part of the Seven Year's War. Napoleon too had a plan to invade England in 1805 but the defeat of the French navy at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in July and Trafalgar in October brought an end to all thought of it. Defeated by Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in August he nevertheless remained entrenched in Egypt and the Ottoman Empire until August of the following year when he sailed back to France.
